some PDs legit do not give 2 shits. my local police refused to show up when a truck jumped the curb, destroyed my mom's car in a parking lot, then drove back up the grass and sped off because they "dont show up to hit & runs anymore" and that she should file a fucking police report. the only reason that guy EVENTUALLY got ripped up by our insurance is because a fucking employee at that Firestone jumped into his car and gave chase all the way to the dude's house. Some jokes write themselves.
The security guard is ignorant of proper evidence collecting protocol. The police had no authority to collect fingerprints either and by collecting them the security guard made them worthless in court as they would not be admissible. He was well meaning but if he had been a good security guard he would have been more aware of a break-in.
Maybe if families and communities worked together to solve crimes more often we wouldn't need to depend on the police for every single little problem. There are less police to help your loved ones because they are all dealing with drunks and hoons and shoplifters and SovCits all day every day. Society is the real problem but too lazy to develop a real solution.
We feel this way because this poor girl is dead but realistically, not every case like this can be treated like a homicide. That would be impossible. Especially when 99.6% of missing persons and runaways are on their own will and not foul play like this case.

Lay out the solution for how the cops could’ve done something differently. Show us how your big brain would juggle thousands of cases and how you could immediately prioritize everything. Even worse was she was found a week later, but they could've found her earlier if they actually went to that location sooner. His phone pinged there. Earlier than the other locations they decided to search. He tried to spend the entire night driving to different cities to throw the location off before going to the apartment complex when he supposedly "hears she was missing"... Miya's death still leaves a large hole in her family's hearts. She is literally thought of DAILY.
I always felt weird when I lived in apartments that the maintenance has access to all the units even though you can request to be home for all work it was still an uneasy feeling. This is sad RIP to Miya

I had to look up where this happened because I think my friend and I ran into Marlon a while back. It was in Florida too. He was the nicest guy and helped my buddy and I out. Hope it wasn’t this guy heart goes out to the family either way though

We did cheerleading together, our brothers played baseball together, we went to school together, had dozens of sleepovers (our parents were very close) and we saw my first concert together; Justin Bieber! But we had the best sleepovers. From makeovers/fashion shows to playing with our littlest pet shops and recording goofy music videos on the laptop haha. She loved to smile and laugh and truly was such a joy to be around.
The level of incompetence shown by the police department is staggering. If a security guard is conducting a better investigation than the police, then the department needs an overhaul.

More training more pay, more desire for people to go into policing. Instead of police becoming private investigators because it pays more they stay police officers. Funding is the soul issue. And have to investigate selectively biased on evidence.

The start I wasn't getting too much... did the family goto the management with their concerns? I know from the end they have a lawsuit against to apartments but I feel like the friends and family should have taken the info they had weeks before to the management instead of just asking for help from the friends as "what should I do"... My heart goes out to the family and the poor girl. The guy should have rotted in jail! We had a creepy maintenance person in our apartments that went to jail for doing the samething. There is no greater example of love than how this family immediately reacted to Miya’s disappearance, investigated the facts, and solved the crime FOR THAT TRIFLING POLICE DEPARTMENT. Ladies don't ever waste time getting into these long conversations with a stalker. Be direct and upfront the first time. If you do not want to be with them say so and block them and NO mixed signals, if thry persist report it to the police and request a restraining order. Then arm yourself! They should have reported this guy to management concerning his access to rooms right from the start. This should never have happened. It's good she sent all the screen shots but it should have never gone this far. Really sad!
The sad part is... there's no reasoning with these kinds of people. Blocking them makes them angry, telling them you don't want them also makes them angry. It sucks especially if police would have likely done nothing about the texts because nothing "physical" happened until her death
I never understood why police say “the first 24 hours of a person missing are the most crucial to finding them” but then when an entire family travels to another state in search of their missing family member the cops say they won’t take it seriously for a few days?!?! Depending on the missing persons age they don’t believe that anything bad has happened to them bc they are older/an adult. They don’t think it’s necessary to start looking for them right away bc if they do they might be “wasting” resources on a person that didn’t want to be found in the first place.
They contradict themselves: the first 24 hours are important then also say wait 24-48 hours! If they don’t do anything immediately and you KNOW a loved one wouldn’t just disappear, then contact the local news stations and papers. It’s ridiculous, RIP Miya
Depending on the age of the person and the age of the people living in the area, law enforcement may decide to wait so the missing person can return on their own. They don’t want to immediately jump on finding someone who wasn’t actually missing.

My friend's beautiful daughter in Tampa was brutally assaulted and murdered by a maintenance man for the complex where she lived. The maintenance man had a disturbing criminal history that his employer ignored. I referred the case to a friend who had handled those sorts of cases and the owners kept transferring the deed and avoiding service of the lawsuit. They were like cockroaches scattering to hide. He finally got someone served and collected a settlement for the family. The perp eventually gave a blood-curdling confession about what occurred during the assault and murder and avoided the death penalty by entering a guilty plea. He knew she was going to be alone and vulnerable when he went for a repair call that had been planned and was not an emergency. You have to be hypervigilant if you are a young woman/person living alone, as predators are everywhere.
Because his friend was her pimp. She was supposed to show up down south for work to meet with a client. 🤦♂️ this is why both lawsuits against the sheriff and apartment complex were thrown out

There’s more information beyond this video but Armando would relay things he heard from her phone conversation too. If you watch this video only, you wouldn’t recognize where they mentioned it. This video was a great snippet of the case but a snippet nonetheless.

This is my cousin!! Our dads run in the same circles so we looked Out for each other like family. As soon as she stopped texting and never showed up to the airport. We immediately knew something was wrong. It was so frustrating. Having police officers did not take it seriously within the mere hours that something happened to her. Shameful that the family did more than the police. I worked for many years at apt complex. Here in Texas you are not allowed a master key. The keys to apt are locked up and a code is assigned to the apt key so nobody except for office staff knows which apt it goes to and key must be signed out.

Man this family is the BEST. They fought for this girl. And never gave up. They did the police’s job and everyone else’s. The police should be ASHAMED of themselves.
And why should they be? Do you know how many times people will not text their family for a week at a time? It happens all the time!! And do you know why it would take them that long to get to her case? Probably because they are looking into someone else’s case! this is one of those cases where everyone around him knew he was a fucking creep but they were his friend so they dismissed and excused his creep ass behaviour until he went so far to kill a woman. and, even then, they spent time going to police to insult the Miya’s family for being desperate to find her.
If it was left to the police they wouldn’t have even moved on it for 48 hours, giving him more than enough time to get rid of vital evidence and even flee the state or country if he wanted to.

The police don't write their own regulations. It is litigious citizens and lawyers who made it evolve as such. Police are 99% reactive to a crime. Just like the world of psych is reactive built. The family was able to do what the police did not BECAUSE they were not tied down by regulations and public opinion would empathize with them and why they may or may not cross a line or two looking for her. If cops cross the line the guy would get off on technicalities etc Just saying, this story could be told minus the emotionally fueled, illogical bashing of the cops. The fingerprints and evidence collected by a security guard may or may not help identify someone, BUT are not admissable in court etc and if cops took them then the perp would walk as it would leave lots of room for "reasonable doubt" etc. This family caught him sooner, doesn't mean police would never have caught him. The thing is the family could have altered the outcome at trial if they messed with stuff, cuz now perp can say they framed him etc. Even with video footage- no guarantee it would be permitted as evidence. Then folks here would be mad at the police for other reasons. It is human to feel some sort of way, but it is also human to inject some logic and common sense and be objective.
As a former maintenance technician this makes me sick. We’re given a lot of responsibility and i always went out of my way to make sure the women especially felt safe. Yes ma’am’s, not staying longer than I needed, keeping my eyes on my work and even wearing a headphone or taking a phone call hands free so they know I’m not interested in their home, rather just fixing the problem. This is why you need to have a porter position for almost a year (groundskeeper, trash, etc) so you can vet people properly before allowing them into someone’s home. Disgraceful.

Wow. I used to work for The Preiss Co, and I just realized why they use physical keys only. I had asked why we didn’t use fobs while I was working there and was told something about a problem at another property, but nothing was really explained… I didn’t put two and two together until I saw the Preiss shirt at the end. Heartbreaking to see how much this family had to endure. They tried so hard, but they were robbed of justice by the same man who robbed them of their time with Miya. 💔 😢

I've had to do this same exact thing. The Howell County Sheriff's Department decided that my daughters murder isn't worth their time because she was an addict. We (my husband, myself and my daughters 15 year old son) found her unresponsive in her 12 year old daughters bedroom. We knew the guy (Anthony Martin) murdered her and her own cousin (Janelle DeMeulemeester) gave him the drugs to kill her because she (Janelle) was sleeping with my daughters husband. In Missouri, an unattended death is supposed to be investigated as a homicide. They didn't do this. They took no statements, collected no evidence except for her phone. I had to make my own crime scene collection kit and collect all evidence including vacuuming. He put fentanal in her drink. She knew something was wrong bc she made herself vomit but it was too late. I collected everything and maintained the chain of custody so when I get an attorney, it's all admissible. It's BS that instead of grieving the loss of my first born, I had to collect the evidence and go over her autopsy report. BS. Don't get murdered in Howell County, MO because youll have to fight like hell to get justice. But justice my daughter will have, one way or another.
This is the most frustrating conclusion to a case I've heard. No real justice, just a possible escape through cowardice. The suspect was found dead almost a week before Miya was found.
Because there is only so much under the law police are allowed to do. The family are more than welcome to do these things and then inform police which then grants police all the access they need under the law.
An officer looked into the room and didn’t notice anything wrong?? With the door propped closed with the little bookshelf, the bed a mess, BLOOD on the pillow? That’s definitely negligence. If he would’ve noticed and reported it, maybe this case could’ve been taken seriously. My heart hurts for Miya and her family.
@cgrnt16944 There are rules to evidence collection when it comes to criminal cases and said evidence being used in a criminal court. Anything picked up by a family member and handed to a detective would not be used due to chain of custody issues because it was not photographed as is undocumented by an evidence tech.. they do what they are allowed to do within the bounds of the law which is 100% okay.
I watch and research a lot of cases and I’m usually not too intensely affected by some, but this case made me truly sick. So many things could have been done to help find Miya faster and they could have done so much more to investigate Armando. The family will never receive full closer because Armando was such a coward he couldn’t face the consequences of his actions. This case also makes me think about stalking/obsession and how the police rarely take it seriously. So many people failed this poor girl. May her family find peace somehow in this twisted world. Rest easy Miya, you deserved so much more 🩷

It honestly happens in a lot of places with missing person's reports. I'm not sure if it's 5 days like this case, but its an awful policy. The first 24 hrs is the most important time to use all resources, and it gets ignored because "well a lot of people leave for different reasons so we're not gonna bother"

As someone with extreme emotional attachment to my own plushies (I think it's literally the only thing I'm aware I'm sentimental of), whenever I hear these sorts of stories it breaks my heart. People often don't take it seriously because it's just a plushie and you're an adult. But if you know either because you know the person or yourself understand it, you know it's almost like a pet. You wouldn't leave it behind, and leaving it behind would be a huge red flag. Anyway point is I knew immediately when they talked about her Teddy. If that thing goes everywhere with her and she never leaves it, then it being abandoned is basically a giant canary-in-the-coal-mine. The Canary is dead.

We’re told the first 48 hours are the most critical yet there are still some police depts who still follow outdated protocol and don’t do anything until after 48 hours have passed. You can’t assume she’s just with friends or a bf without knowing anything about a person. The family know her and knew she wouldn’t just go AWOL without letting them know.
@@1972dsrai The initial delay was slightly understandable: no direct evidence of foul play other than the family's concerns. However, once the family entered the room and observed what appeared to be blood, a hidden utility knife, and signs of a struggle it 100% should have changed the situation. Even more so once the dude suspected of harassing her showed up unprompted at 4am, flat-out lying in front of the police, and acknowledging he has access to her apartment. Police will often hesitate to start investigating a missing adult unless there's clear indication of foul play. However, it appears the family established that for the police and they still hesitated which absolutely is bad.
This is why protocols for missing persons need to be the same on a national level and outdated protocols such as waiting 48 hours scrapped. Its not fair the level and quality of policing can differ so widely depending on where you live. My friend's Sister was murdered in the 70's. The entire family really never got over it, how could they? The last time I saw her she was modeling coats at the GBCC Country Club. Even worse was she was found a week later, but they could've found her earlier if they actually went to that location sooner. His phone pinged there. Earlier than the other locations they decided to search. He tried to spend the entire night driving to different cities to throw the location off before going to the apartment complex when he supposedly "hears she was missing"... Miya's death still leaves a large hole in her family's hearts. She is literally thought of DAILY.
I always felt weird when I lived in apartments that the maintenance has access to all the units even though you can request to be home for all work it was still an uneasy feeling. This is sad RIP to Miya

I had to look up where this happened because I think my friend and I ran into Marlon a while back. It was in Florida too. He was the nicest guy and helped my buddy and I out. Hope it wasn’t this guy heart goes out to the family either way though

We did cheerleading together, our brothers played baseball together, we went to school together, had dozens of sleepovers (our parents were very close) and we saw my first concert together; Justin Bieber! But we had the best sleepovers. From makeovers/fashion shows to playing with our littlest pet shops and recording goofy music videos on the laptop haha. She loved to smile and laugh and truly was such a joy to be around.

I know from the end they have a lawsuit against to apartments but I feel like the friends and family should have taken the info they had weeks before to the management instead of just asking for help from the friends as "what should I do"... Ladies don't ever waste time getting into these long conversations with a stalker. Be direct and upfront the first time. If you do not want to be with them say so and block them and NO mixed signals, if thry persist report it to the police and request a restraining order. Then arm yourself! Depending on the missing persons age they don’t believe that anything bad has happened to them bc they are older/an adult. They don’t think it’s necessary to start looking for them right away bc if they do they might be “wasting” resources on a person that didn’t want to be found in the first place.

Depending on the age of the person and the age of the people living in the area, law enforcement may decide to wait so the missing person can return on their own. They don’t want to immediately jump on finding someone who wasn’t actually missing.

My friend's beautiful daughter in Tampa was brutally assaulted and murdered by a maintenance man for the complex where she lived. The maintenance man had a disturbing criminal history that his employer ignored. I referred the case to a friend who had handled those sorts of cases and the owners kept transferring the deed and avoiding service of the lawsuit. They were like cockroaches scattering to hide. He finally got someone served and collected a settlement for the family. The perp eventually gave a blood-curdling confession about what occurred during the assault and murder and avoided the death penalty by entering a guilty plea. He knew she was going to be alone and vulnerable when he went for a repair call that had been planned and was not an emergency. You have to be hypervigilant if you are a young woman/person living alone, as predators are everywhere.

The thing is the family could have altered the outcome at trial if they messed with stuff, cuz now perp can say they framed him etc. Even with video footage- no guarantee it would be permitted as evidence.

As a former maintenance technician this makes me sick. We’re given a lot of responsibility and i always went out of my way to make sure the women especially felt safe. Yes ma’am’s, not staying longer than I needed, keeping my eyes on my work and even wearing a headphone or taking a phone call hands free so they know I’m not interested in their home, rather just fixing the problem.
This is why you need to have a porter position for almost a year (groundskeeper, trash, etc) so you can vet people properly before allowing them into someone’s home. Disgraceful.

Wow. I used to work for The Preiss Co, and I just realized why they use physical keys only. I had asked why we didn’t use fobs while I was working there and was told something about a problem at another property, but nothing was really explained… I didn’t put two and two together until I saw the Preiss shirt at the end. Heartbreaking to see how much this family had to endure. They tried so hard, but they were robbed of justice by the same man who robbed them of their time with Miya. 💔 😢

As I told my daughter, I wish this beautiful young lady had discussed what this obsessed psychopath was doing to her with an older woman like myself because I would've advised her to MOVE out of that apartment ASAP because not only was this older man harassing her, he was refusing to accept she was not interested in him ( huge red flag) & he bascially had a key to her apartment & could enter anytime...Myia was wise beyond her years by informing her family, social media, & friends of what this man was doing, unfortunately no one advised her to report this man to management, or authorities BUT, most importantly, MOVE out of that building!!!!! My heart breaks for her, & her loving family! I pray they find justice by way of those in authority being held accountable for their extreme mishandling of this tragic case!!!

I remember watching this all unfold and it was so sad…you just knew that something terrible happened from the moment she was reported missing and no one in law enforcement took it seriously…

I've had to do this same exact thing. The Howell County Sheriff's Department decided that my daughters murder isn't worth their time because she was an addict. We (my husband, myself and my daughters 15 year old son) found her unresponsive in her 12 year old daughters bedroom. We knew the guy (Anthony Martin) murdered her and her own cousin (Janelle DeMeulemeester) gave him the drugs to kill her because she (Janelle) was sleeping with my daughters husband. In Missouri, an unattended death is supposed to be investigated as a homicide. They didn't do this. They took no statements, collected no evidence except for her phone. I had to make my own crime scene collection kit and collect all evidence including vacuuming. He put fentanal in her drink. She knew something was wrong bc she made herself vomit but it was too late. I collected everything and maintained the chain of custody so when I get an attorney, it's all admissible. It's BS that instead of grieving the loss of my first born, I had to collect the evidence and go over her autopsy report. BS. Don't get murdered in Howell County, MO because youll have to fight like hell to get justice. But justice my daughter will have, one way or another.

This is the most frustrating conclusion to a case I've heard. No real justice, just a possible escape through cowardice. The suspect was found dead almost a week before Miya was found.

@cgrnt16944 There are rules to evidence collection when it comes to criminal cases and said evidence being used in a criminal court. Anything picked up by a family member and handed to a detective would not be used due to chain of custody issues because it was not photographed as is undocumented by an evidence tech.. they do what they are allowed to do within the bounds of the law which is 100% okay.
Her family is well spoken, wasting no time in explaining/ clear and straight to the point.
I watch and research a lot of cases and I’m usually not too intensely affected by some, but this case made me truly sick. So many things could have been done to help find Miya faster and they could have done so much more to investigate Armando. The family will never receive full closer because Armando was such a coward he couldn’t face the consequences of his actions. This case also makes me think about stalking/obsession and how the police rarely take it seriously. So many people failed this poor girl. May her family find peace somehow in this twisted world. Rest easy Miya, you deserved so much more 🩷
Every case I watch breaks my heart but this one has especially. I can’t help but put myself in the victims mindset and feel absolute fear. I put myself in the family mindset and mourn. Hey that’s what you’re paying taxes for right? Y’all keep putting these governments in power and look how they treat the people they reside over!
Do you know how many times people will not text their family for a week at a time? It happens all the time!! And do you know why it would take them that long to get to her case? Probably because they are looking into someone else’s case! If you take every case of a college kid not texting or ghosting their family for a few days you would be inundated, and it would take even longer to get around to everyone.
It honestly happens in a lot of places with missing person's reports. I'm not sure if it's 5 days like this case, but its an awful policy. The first 24 hrs is the most important time to use all resources, and it gets ignored because "well a lot of people leave for different reasons so we're not gonna bother"

What a beautiful family. Seriously. That grandmother should be proud of the family she raised. This is why you never underestimate someone with a family. This is a reason why family is so important. i thought the same thing! along with how her aunt was able to recall in amazing detail each of the necklaces and bangles that Miya wore regularly. it was very evident that her family deeply cared about her and the police should’ve recognized that and taken it more seriously sooner. RIP
As someone with extreme emotional attachment to my own plushies (I think it's literally the only thing I'm aware I'm sentimental of), whenever I hear these sorts of stories it breaks my heart. People often don't take it seriously because it's just a plushie and you're an adult. But if you know either because you know the person or yourself understand it, you know it's almost like a pet. You wouldn't leave it behind, and leaving it behind would be a huge red flag.
Anyway point is I knew immediately when they talked about her Teddy. If that thing goes everywhere with her and she never leaves it, then it being abandoned is basically a giant canary-in-the-coal-mine. The Canary is dead.

Dude went to school with my brother, same high school I graduated from, and the same high school Casey Anthony graduated from oddly enough. Such a sad case taking place so close to home makes me feel so paranoid.

You can’t assume she’s just with friends or a bf without knowing anything about a person. The family know her and knew she wouldn’t just go AWOL without letting them know.

However, once the family entered the room and observed what appeared to be blood, a hidden utility knife, and signs of a struggle it 100% should have changed the situation. Even more so once the dude suspected of harassing her showed up unprompted at 4am, flat-out lying in front of the police, and acknowledging he has access to her apartment.
Police will often hesitate to start investigating a missing adult unless there's clear indication of foul play. However, it appears the family established that for the police and they still hesitated which absolutely is bad.

My friend's Sister was murdered in the 70's. The entire family really never got over it, how could they? The last time I saw her she was modeling coats at the GBCC Country Club. This guy was definitely obsessed with this lady, watching through the fence. What a lovely family & the Security Guard. They had to do the investigation on their own.🥀🥀🥀
