In WW II my father was draft exempt (he worked for the railroads) but in 1944 when the Coast Guard asked for replacements for the men they were training for the landings on Japans Home Islands he stepped forward. I've toured the USS Midway Museum Ship in San Diego. Its 100-ft shorter than the current Nimitz class, but is still enormous in its own right. Its impossible to understand the size of it without actually being on it. And walking on the flight deck or the hanger deck seals the deal.
It amazes me the thing that most impresses them about the US military is the availability of good food for everyone. More than the bombers, aircraft carriers, or training - its the buffet.

There is a story about Boris Yeltsin visiting the US in the 1980s. He was the 2nd highest ranking official in the USSR at the time. Part of the tour was to visit an American supermarket. He was so amazed by all the food he did not believe it was real. He told the tour guides that this was just show for and he was not fooled by American propaganda. He asked to be brought to a different super market one that was not planned for the tour. When he visited the 2nd super market it had all the same foods and fully stocked shelves. In that moment he abandoned communism. He later wrote about it in his memoirs. A few short years later Boris Yeltsin would become the President of Russia and dismantle communism. The cold war was essentially won with a super market.

And in NK the sight of one aircraft carrier was considered "an emergency". A carrier strike group (CSG) is an operational formation composed of roughly 7,500 personnel, usually an aircraft carrier, at least one cruiser, a destroyer squadron of at least two destroyers or frigates, and a carrier air wing of 65 to 70 aircraft. A carrier strike group also, on occasion, includes submarines, attached logistics ships and a supply ship. Trust me, KJU don't want no smoke. That's why he hasn't popped off his bottle rocket yet.

I served on the aircraft carrier USS Dwight D Eisenhower between 2011-2017... Trust me there's sooooooo much more these guys would get a kick out of if they toured a carrier in person. It really helps give a sense of the true size of the ship. When I first arrived on board it took nearly 6 months before I knew how to get everywhere on the ship without getting lost. I served in VFA-83 as an AO from 2018 till last month and deployed on Mighty Ike in 2020 and 2021, now "Iron" Ike, with VFA-83. I was only able to figure out the essential spaces for squadron personnel and rarely got the opportunity to truly explore the ship. I know there is so much more to it than I know already. The squadron spaces alone, the steel (not elastic) arresting cables, and the non-skid (not rubber) flight deck and hangar deck, would blow their minds
I visited the Kittyhawk when it was tied up in Alameda. Stepping from the dock to the deck I was immediately struck by how much more stable and solid the deck was. It felt like being on the roof of a building.

I'd be more thrilled with them visiting Two actual U.S. bases (Ft Hood being one, Norforlk being the other), and one active (Patrolling) Nimitz Class Carrier for 3 days each! Being around the soldiers, facilities, and equipment would be an eye opener!
Having done a few deployments on aircraft carriers, it is nice to see the awe on their faces. I have been out of the Navy for over a decade now, and this video reminds me of how amazing it is to see aircraft landing and taking off from a ship, which I kinda took for granted after the first 6 month deployment. While it might not be in the forefront of every sailors mind at all times, one of the reasons we were out there was to protect the freedom of America and to show the world that we can protect ourselves. I only wish that more people from oppressed countries like North Korea could have the option of becoming Americans and being treated as a human instead of a robot. I believe, after visiting 15+ countries, that America, even with all its faults, is one of the best places in the world to live. I am glad that at least these two young men were able to escape the oppression of North Korea.

Having seen them perform many times during fleet week in san francisco, they're amazing to see in action, especially when you're on top of twin peaks with one flying just below so close you can see the rivey lines and pilot's face!

02:30 For anyone interested in the actual details, there's more to it than that. On takeoff, the aircraft are attached to a sliding mechanism in the deck powered by steam that catapults them forward to greatly enhance their acceleration (it's just called the steam catapult). They do certainly apply engine power for a bit before taking off, but a substantial portion of the takeoff velocity is provided by the steam catapult mechanism itself, which brings them up to well over 100 knots using 15-40 or so tons of force (varies by ship model). The arresting cables are used only for landing, to quickly slow the aircraft down. There are three or four of them, and the goal is to _not_ get either the first or last. Not because any of them do a better job, but because hitting the first or last cable means you're not very precise in landing.

They are very aware that reunification would incur massive economic loss. Plus they know what is to the North of them. A horrific dictator served by dangerous soldiers. This is my old ship. I was one of the guys that wore a green shirt on the flight deck. Yellow shirts handle the aircraft taxi, chain and chalk, Purple shirts fuel the aircraft, Green shirts control the catapults and arresting gear (the cables that catch the hook hanging off the back of the aircraft), The catapults that shoot the aircraft off the deck are steam powered and very loud. White shirts are QA they usually make sure everything on the flight deck is safe and productive. Red shirts handle ordinance (they move bombs around). And for the life of me i can't remember what the blue shirts do. Yes we were fed very well. Every new guy out of boot camp has to work in the galley for a month i think, that may have changed. I personally served pie the whole time. Strawberry rhubarb, cherry or apple. After that i worked some of the hardest days of my life, not only on the flight deck where the hours are long but the work under deck is often much more difficult. That being said i also saw parts of the world i would not have seen otherwise and wouldn't change it for anything. In hindsight I wish i would have stayed in longer.
@General Rico correct! The engineering of the plane is also incredible as well! I heard from an aeronautical engineer that gave a talk at Nellis AFB that with the breakthroughs in new material sciences that have been made since its creation we could upgrade it so it wouldn’t even need to take off empty or collapse itself from compression! It also would be able to fly much farther and faster, with better fuel economy to boot!

I know for a fact only for pre-planned events when a US carrier is docked in home ports is the only time non-personnel ever have a chance to get on such a vessel.

These seem like 2 nice guys with bright futures. They’re right about the flight deck being dangerous. On my carrier deployment, we had 2 people sucked up into jet turbine engine intakes. An aircraft also landed short and hit the end of the flight deck, breaking the aircraft in two & 1 pilot ejected and landed in the flames. After oil and fluids were drained, the wreck was pushed into the ocean. I saved a piece of it as a souvenir. The landing cables can also snap, and jet exhaust can blow you down or even overboard. 12 hour shifts, but occasional ice cream and lots of visits to cool countries in Asia. Stay safe out there kids!

The strength of the aircraft carrier is the strike group, not individual aircraft carrier on its own. If you showed anyone the strike group they’ll immediately realize fighting the US is guaranteed defeat
Yeah its like we have 12 of them I think. A lot but not to many right, wrong. Each individual aircraft carrier has a FLEET around it; destroyers, refueler, subs, etc. It realy is a show of the US global reach at it's fine.

Thats why they invested in long range anti-ship missiles and building military islands all over the south China sea. Area denial. Hello there, I'm a citizen of both America and Canada. I can give the two of you 3 quick but, insane facts on America's aircraft carriers. 1. The USA has the most aircraft carriers in the world with 11 in commission (9 in service, 8 Improved Nimitz class & the USS Gerald R. Ford and 2 undergoing a re-hull, Nimitz class), plus 2-3 more (all of them are part of the Gerald R. Ford class). 2. All of the US's aircraft carriers are called super carriers because of their shear weight. 3. All of the US's aircraft carriers are nuclear powered.
They are truly masterpieces of engineering. HMS Queen Elizabeth is currently at sea, forming the centre of a formidable carrier strike group against a fleet of Her Majesty's Canadian ships (worry not, just an exercise called JW2020). Rest assured there will be plenty more pictures and videos to come.

@Frazmataz British jets have been operational for a couple years. Israeli F35s were not spotted by Russian air defense systems in all of their air raids. The only disappointing aspect is that the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force may never purchase 138 of them.

Show them some of the safety films from aircraft carriers. Deck crew being "sucked" into A-6 inlets or EA-6 is always good. The Forrestal incident gives an idea of the hazards.

Them getting excited about the ice cream reminds me of a story told by an ice cream maker manufacturer. During WWII, every US carrier would have one of their ice cream makers, but the smaller ships wouldn't. So, during the Pacific campaign the carriers made it known that if a ship recovered one of their downed pilots, the ship would get a huge drum of ice cream as thanks. You can imagine the effect this had on how quickly pilots were recovered! Eventually they had to be told to calm it down after two destroyers nearly collided in a race to recover a pilot.
This is so weird. I grew up in Hampton Roads, so I was always around military craft of all types. I remember as a kid getting to go on a Nimitz class carrier for the first time, and thinking it was *smaller* than I expected.

Yeah, they're not sitting ducks. They have a whole group of ships whose entire function is to protect it, even if that means sacrificing itself to take a hit meant for the carrier, but really, they have their own defenses on top of the carrier group's umbra.

I'd given anything just to know what the US is hiding up their sleeve. I feel like China and Russia know damn well that there's more than meets the eye themselves. It's why they're trying to stall and expand their economies rather than take any meaningful military action. What they know of our military demonstrates a clear and monstrous advantage. What they don't know could end any potential war just as it begins.
Landing and stopping is done with a steel cable with a breaking system under the deck and manned to adjust tolerances and weights. When the plane lands it has full power going in the engines in case if misses the cable and has to take back off and do a go around. There are 3 cables that the pilot aims for. If one cable should snap, then the force is so great that if anyone is standing around it will literally cut them in half.
Since y'all are interested in the shooters, here's a bit of context. They're usually Naval Aviators (pilots or naval flight officers) who fly aircraft that aren't considered "carrier based," such as P-3s. It allows them to "soak up" the carrier life and gain perspective, in case they find themselves as a senior officer on one, some day. They refer to it as their "disassociated tour," since it's not a flying job.

The "string" accross the rear deck of the carrier are actually a thick steel cable that goes thru the deck to a huge series of pully's and attached to a huge hydraulic cyclander to slow the airplane down. The catapult to lauch the aircraft are High pressure steam driven cyclanders which along with the high power jet engine of the plane allow the plane to be launched from the carrier.

It is not an “elastic string” that the aircraft’s hook catches. Metal cables and there are mechanisms below the deck involved. Don’t know what rubber thing the narrator is talking about. There is a catapult mechanism that launches them. No secret. Probably improved since Vietnam era. Most dangerous place on a carrier is the flight deck. Hopefully cable construction has improved. Nets around a carrier are there to catch crew blow off or who jump away when a cable broke. Won’t go into the gorie things. The jet he road in is one of the Navy’s “Blue Angels”, a air team that participates in air shows at mostly Navy bases. Ex was on the now retired “Enterprise”. Probably a lot of improvements on the newer carriers.

A hook is attached to the plane which caches a cable and damper system (Arrestor cables) to stop the plane. To Launch the plane a steam powered system pushes a piston down a cylinder a cable attached to the piston is attached to the planes front wheel. It accelerates the plane to flight speed in a few seconds. The plane is locked in position the engines revved to full power and then the plane is released and catapulted into the sky. No rubber used in either operation.

I've toured the USS Midway Museum Ship in San Diego. Its 100-ft shorter than the current Nimitz class, but is still enormous in its own right. Its impossible to understand the size of it without actually being on it. And walking on the flight deck or the hanger deck seals the deal.

There is a story about Boris Yeltsin visiting the US in the 1980s. He was the 2nd highest ranking official in the USSR at the time. Part of the tour was to visit an American supermarket. He was so amazed by all the food he did not believe it was real. He told the tour guides that this was just show for and he was not fooled by American propaganda. He asked to be brought to a different super market one that was not planned for the tour. When he visited the 2nd super market it had all the same foods and fully stocked shelves. In that moment he abandoned communism. He later wrote about it in his memoirs. A few short years later Boris Yeltsin would become the President of Russia and dismantle communism.

I served on the aircraft carrier USS Dwight D Eisenhower between 2011-2017... Trust me there's sooooooo much more these guys would get a kick out of if they toured a carrier in person. It really helps give a sense of the true size of the ship. When I first arrived on board it took nearly 6 months before I knew how to get everywhere on the ship without getting lost. I served in VFA-83 as an AO from 2018 till last month and deployed on Mighty Ike in 2020 and 2021, now "Iron" Ike, with VFA-83. I was only able to figure out the essential spaces for squadron personnel and rarely got the opportunity to truly explore the ship. I know there is so much more to it than I know already. The squadron spaces alone, the steel (not elastic) arresting cables, and the non-skid (not rubber) flight deck and hangar deck, would blow their minds
I visited the Kittyhawk when it was tied up in Alameda. Stepping from the dock to the deck I was immediately struck by how much more stable and solid the deck was. It felt like being on the roof of a building.

I'd be more thrilled with them visiting Two actual U.S. bases (Ft Hood being one, Norforlk being the other), and one active (Patrolling) Nimitz Class Carrier for 3 days each! Being around the soldiers, facilities, and equipment would be an eye opener!
Having done a few deployments on aircraft carriers, it is nice to see the awe on their faces. I have been out of the Navy for over a decade now, and this video reminds me of how amazing it is to see aircraft landing and taking off from a ship, which I kinda took for granted after the first 6 month deployment. While it might not be in the forefront of every sailors mind at all times, one of the reasons we were out there was to protect the freedom of America and to show the world that we can protect ourselves. I only wish that more people from oppressed countries like North Korea could have the option of becoming Americans and being treated as a human instead of a robot. I believe, after visiting 15+ countries, that America, even with all its faults, is one of the best places in the world to live. I am glad that at least these two young men were able to escape the oppression of North Korea.
I hope they don't have the option to "become Americans" but to be North Koreans in a country made for people, not dictators.

The arresting cables are used only for landing, to quickly slow the aircraft down. There are three or four of them, and the goal is to _not_ get either the first or last. Not because any of them do a better job, but because hitting the first or last cable means you're not very precise in landing.

This is my old ship. I was one of the guys that wore a green shirt on the flight deck.
Yellow shirts handle the aircraft taxi, chain and chalk,
Purple shirts fuel the aircraft,
Green shirts control the catapults and arresting gear (the cables that catch the hook hanging off the back of the aircraft), The catapults that shoot the aircraft off the deck are steam powered and very loud.
White shirts are QA they usually make sure everything on the flight deck is safe and productive.
Red shirts handle ordinance (they move bombs around).
And for the life of me i can't remember what the blue shirts do.
Yes we were fed very well. Every new guy out of boot camp has to work in the galley for a month i think, that may have changed. I personally served pie the whole time. Strawberry rhubarb, cherry or apple. After that i worked some of the hardest days of my life, not only on the flight deck where the hours are long but the work under deck is often much more difficult. That being said i also saw parts of the world i would not have seen otherwise and wouldn't change it for anything. In hindsight I wish i would have stayed in longer.

I heard from an aeronautical engineer that gave a talk at Nellis AFB that with the breakthroughs in new material sciences that have been made since its creation we could upgrade it so it wouldn’t even need to take off empty or collapse itself from compression! It also would be able to fly much farther and faster, with better fuel economy to boot!

These seem like 2 nice guys with bright futures. They’re right about the flight deck being dangerous.
On my carrier deployment, we had 2 people sucked up into jet turbine engine intakes. An aircraft also landed short and hit the end of the flight deck, breaking the aircraft in two & 1 pilot ejected and landed in the flames. After oil and fluids were drained, the wreck was pushed into the ocean. I saved a piece of it as a souvenir.
The landing cables can also snap, and jet exhaust can blow you down or even overboard.
12 hour shifts, but occasional ice cream and lots of visits to cool countries in Asia.

The strength of the aircraft carrier is the strike group, not individual aircraft carrier on its own. If you showed anyone the strike group they’ll immediately realize fighting the US is guaranteed defeat

Hello there, I'm a citizen of both America and Canada. I can give the two of you 3 quick but, insane facts on America's aircraft carriers.
1. The USA has the most aircraft carriers in the world with 11 in commission (9 in service, 8 Improved Nimitz class & the USS Gerald R. Ford and 2 undergoing a re-hull, Nimitz class), plus 2-3 more (all of them are part of the Gerald R. Ford class).
2. All of the US's aircraft carriers are called super carriers because of their shear weight.
3. All of the US's aircraft carriers are nuclear powered.
They seem like good brave kids, Peace thru Strength.
Have they seen the F-35b hovering? Should show them the USS America and the HMS Queen Elizabeth with F-35b's onboard.
They are truly masterpieces of engineering. HMS Queen Elizabeth is currently at sea, forming the centre of a formidable carrier strike group against a fleet of Her Majesty's Canadian ships (worry not, just an exercise called JW2020). Rest assured there will be plenty more pictures and videos to come.

@Frazmataz British jets have been operational for a couple years. Israeli F35s were not spotted by Russian air defense systems in all of their air raids. The only disappointing aspect is that the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force may never purchase 138 of them.

easy things to check out is the red flag combat sim result which 20 : 1 kill against the current modern peer, it might be not as good f-22 in one on one but it's a really good team multirole capabilities plane. alot of country in fact lining up for them

Show them some of the safety films from aircraft carriers. Deck crew being "sucked" into A-6 inlets or EA-6 is always good. The Forrestal incident gives an idea of the hazards.
It's not an elastic string. It's a series of steel cables stretched across the deck that catch a hook.
Keep an eye on the internet, US bases in Korea may have air shows. Contact PA ahead of time to make sure they know who you are and clear you before getting to the gate.

Them getting excited about the ice cream reminds me of a story told by an ice cream maker manufacturer.
During WWII, every US carrier would have one of their ice cream makers, but the smaller ships wouldn't.
So, during the Pacific campaign the carriers made it known that if a ship recovered one of their downed pilots, the ship would get a huge drum of ice cream as thanks.
You can imagine the effect this had on how quickly pilots were recovered! Eventually they had to be told to calm it down after two destroyers nearly collided in a race to recover a pilot.
This is so weird. I grew up in Hampton Roads, so I was always around military craft of all types. I remember as a kid getting to go on a Nimitz class carrier for the first time, and thinking it was *smaller* than I expected.

Seriously, the NK soldiers seem pretty chill and enjoy seeing all the things that we have. Hopefully a program can be had with SK/US relations that those who defect from NK military and be able to join SK ranks while getting education for learning multiple languages, including English.
That's because they're the ones with which the brainwashing didn't stick and they got out. I don't think you'd get that same reaction with most of those that are still there. You have to remember that most don't even know what's really going on in the world because KJU limits what information they receive. It's like a darker version of The Trueman Show.

And probably only officers would get even that little.
SK officially accepts all NK defectors as citizens automatically. So im pretty sure they can join the army as i believe that they have mandatory service (not sure whether its applicable to defectors since im making an assumption)

Yeah, they're not sitting ducks. They have a whole group of ships whose entire function is to protect it, even if that means sacrificing itself to take a hit meant for the carrier, but really, they have their own defenses on top of the carrier group's umbra.

I'd given anything just to know what the US is hiding up their sleeve. I feel like China and Russia know damn well that there's more than meets the eye themselves.
It's why they're trying to stall and expand their economies rather than take any meaningful military action. What they know of our military demonstrates a clear and monstrous advantage. What they don't know could end any potential war just as it begins.

Landing and stopping is done with a steel cable with a breaking system under the deck and manned to adjust tolerances and weights. When the plane lands it has full power going in the engines in case if misses the cable and has to take back off and do a go around. There are 3 cables that the pilot aims for. If one cable should snap, then the force is so great that if anyone is standing around it will literally cut them in half.
Since y'all are interested in the shooters, here's a bit of context. They're usually Naval Aviators (pilots or naval flight officers) who fly aircraft that aren't considered "carrier based," such as P-3s. It allows them to "soak up" the carrier life and gain perspective, in case they find themselves as a senior officer on one, some day. They refer to it as their "disassociated tour," since it's not a flying job.

Yes, one of the best movies showing the capability of a modern aircraft carrier.
The most realistic Navy film there is (other than The Last Detail) haha. I mean yes it's a sci-fi film, but I mean that's the real Navy in that film!
The "string" accross the rear deck of the carrier are actually a thick steel cable that goes thru the deck to a huge series of pully's and attached to a huge hydraulic cyclander to slow the airplane down. The catapult to lauch the aircraft are High pressure steam driven cyclanders which along with the high power jet engine of the plane allow the plane to be launched from the carrier.

It is not an “elastic string” that the aircraft’s hook catches. Metal cables and there are mechanisms below the deck involved. Don’t know what rubber thing the narrator is talking about. There is a catapult mechanism that launches them. No secret. Probably improved since Vietnam era. Most dangerous place on a carrier is the flight deck. Hopefully cable construction has improved. Nets around a carrier are there to catch crew blow off or who jump away when a cable broke. Won’t go into the gorie things. The jet he road in is one of the Navy’s “Blue Angels”, a air team that participates in air shows at mostly Navy bases. Ex was on the now retired “Enterprise”. Probably a lot of improvements on the newer carriers.

As a former member of the Navy who worked the Flightdeck of the USS Nimitz i can honestly say what you guys are seeing, is 100% REAL!
You have to eat well on the carrier, takes about 100 crew just to wind up the elastic bands for launching the aircraft...

A hook is attached to the plane which caches a cable and damper system (Arrestor cables) to stop the plane. To Launch the plane a steam powered system pushes a piston down a cylinder a cable attached to the piston is attached to the planes front wheel. It accelerates the plane to flight speed in a few seconds. The plane is locked in position the engines revved to full power and then the plane is released and catapulted into the sky. No rubber used in either operation.

@Avery Bullock basically any of the gulf states and most of the southern east coast states, not to mention the landlocked states connected to said coastal states. BBQ is quite popular all around the states, but these few states take the cake.
