- Poor Luna the tawny owl can't seem to catch a break. Within 48 hours of laying her first egg of the season, her nest is invaded by barn owls - then a rogue male tawny owl tries it on.

First egg of the season
Luna's laid her first egg on March 4th, the first tawny owl egg of this season and a very precious moment for this tawny owl mum who so far has lost two clutches. Keep your eye on the live cameras to see her lay the rest of this season's clutch.
Barn owl intrusion
But when she flies out to take a break, a female barn owl invades the nest and begins to turn the egg with her beak. This is Gylfie, who is still trying to find a suitable nest site to lay her own eggs. She is backed up by her mate Dryer, who keeps watch as she enters, but thankfully appears to do no damage
Male tawny owl attack
Then before poor Luna has a chance to get back to the nest, she is attacked by a male tawny owl, who seems to want to mate with her.
Bomber flies to the rescue
Thankfully Luna's mate Bomber is not far away and swiftly flies down to defend Luna. Watch as later he brings her a meal as she recovers from her ordeal.

This tawny owl pair have been through so much together, let us hope Luna gets plenty of rest now so that she can lay the rest of her clutch safely.

Luna and Bomber are the hero foster parents of the owl kingdom. I really hope Luna and Bomber get to raise her own little ones this time, a fitting reward for all of the foster owlets that they have cared for and raised so beautifully.

Taking care of Luna and their owlets. ❤️ Luna deserves her own family with owlets at this point. They go through their fair share of hard work and intense moments for their little family to be complete.
gylfie's treatment of the egg is so fascinating to me. it's not unusual for owls to raid each others' nests, especially if they are vying for a nest site. reminds me of when finn dropped in on one of the kestrel (? if i'm remembering correctly?) nests, he just looked around and left, didn't mess with the eggs at all. some owls are just less territorial than others, i suppose. fascinating to watch her draw it up close, almost like she's about to brood it. the best thing about these cameras is getting to see all of these fascinating behaviors that we weren't privy to before.

I was thinking this too! It definitely looked like she was about to sit down and start brooding that egg. Seeing their instincts pick up like that is super interesting, and it kinda made me wonder if she'd simply start nesting there and brood the egg herself if Luna hadn't returned for whatever reason. I know they've successfully fostered chicks before, but it makes me curious if wild owls have ever fostered eggs- esp that of another owl species!
It's interesting because Gylfie's late mate Finn was also recorded doing the same thing to Luna and Bomber's egg in a prior breeding season. Carefully checking on it and then leaving.
@@jessicadias5014 I thought it was Finn I saw before! wasn't sure if I misremembered. I think it's funny that they both have this sort of personality, and Gylfie's current mate is quite mild as well. I try not to anthropomorphize, but animals do have personalities - it'd make sense, I believe, for birds to seek out partners of a compatible disposition. so fascinating, it really makes you wonder.

Poor Luna!
I have become so fascinated with owls this month. I heard mating calls for hours. I wasn’t sure what it was but sounded like an owl. That night I was on my deck with my two dogs and looked up and she was laser focused on us. Went inside. Not sure if she was thinking we were a threat. Everyday since when I walk the dogs near the wetlands there she is staring from afar.
Send her love and I bet you'll even get closer to her. 😊 Not even kidding lol

I had a fledged great horned fly into my house the other night. My back door was wide open. Absolutely beautiful moment. It is free now, but I do have pictures.
