Perfect ending of a video :D
1 - StarCraft - Brood War (basically found all my friends through it when I was moved to a different school, defined my life for so many years)
2 - StarCraft 2 - Same reason but later, started taking it seriously ended up being Top 8 nationally, but dropped it after HotS cos life happened, but to this day I still watch a ton of YT videos, mainly WinterStarcraft and LowKo
3 - Heroes of Might and Magic 3 - Cannot count the hours me and my brothers put into this game, staying up late at night doing hot seat games
4 - World of WarCraft - Just the best MMORPG in the market basically, so many combinations and playstyles, classes. The amount of content is just mindblowing and the difficulty is so high that I can rarely finish the highest content in the seasons
5 - Borderlands 2 - I'd say if you ever want to try out a chill FPS that doesn't need to be taken seriously, BL2 is the game. Incredebly funny yet lot of builds exist and the Diablo-like loot system + extra difficulty you can add really makes it shine. Also who doesn't want to hear their character laugh when they just blow up an enemy :D

    1. Mass Effect Trilogy - I genuinely think you would love this series. The pause/play gameplay is kind of the inversion of WC3, FPS with a little strategy mixed in.
    2. Path of Exile
    3. WC3 - Specifically the custom maps, I didn't really play the multiplayer.
    4. Control - Insanely beautiful game
    5. Dawn of War II - Specifically the campaign, again I think you would adore this. The hero/RPG elements blended so well with the RTS gameplay.

    1. Dungeon Keeper 2
    2. Warcraft 3 TFT
    3. Dwarf Fortress
    4. Baldur's Gate 3
    5. Fallout: New Vegas
Great list, Grubby. The thousands of hours I must have spent playing WC3 custom games and random team matches in high school... It will always have a special place in my memory. Before that, Dungeon Keeper 2 was my introduction to the RTS genre. I fell in love with the dark humor, music, and playing as the villain. I still go back to it from time to time.

    In no particular order:
    - Super Mario Odyssey. Perfect relax game which I play through yearly.
    - Europa Universalis 4. Instead of the RP experience being centered around i fantastical creature/hero, you get to RP as a nation.
    - Victoria 3. Same as the one above.
    - World of Warcraft: Vanilla/Classic. Fantastic times with one's friends.
    - Brood War. Barely play it, but watch it religiously (thank you Nick and Dan)
    - Diablo 2. Childhood defining game.
    - Dota 2. Fantastic game. Looking forward to every TI.
    - Pokemon blue. Got a little emotional when I came to think of it, especially the soundtrack.
    - Mafia 1. Played it soo much in 2002 or so when it released. One of the best games ever.
    Special mentions:
    - WC2 and Dune 2000. My earliest RTS experiences.
    - Fifa 98
    - WC3. Tower defence on LAN was some of the most fun things you could do.
    - Battlefield 1942/Vietnam.
    - CoD2

    #1 Warlords: Battlecry
    #2 Dungeon Keeper
    #3 Dragon Quest Monsters 2
    #4 Warcraft 3

    #1 Subnautica
    #2 The Long Dark
    #3 Kenshi

    #5 Undertale

Dawngate, the actual best MOBA and one of the best games of all time, RIP, I cannot express how much my heart is still broken. Would be top pick if it still existed.
Against the Storm, feels too recent to really call it one of my favorite games of all time but definitely my most recent favorite.
Soulsborne series, because I can't narrow it down to one.

      Dune 2 was amazing.
I begged my parents to buy me a PC because of that game.
I used to have a Commodore 64 up until that point.
Man, we were poor, but I got some dinky used PC and an OLD monochrome monitor that was only able to display different shades of green and whatever and looked more akin to a giant nuclear toaster than a monitor. But was I happy? Yes sir!
Xcom was also amazing. It just had a really shitty progression system and you quickly maxed out everything and life became kinda boring, but as a kid I loved it.
I probably spent a good chunk on my youth on Civ 1 2 3 4. Sadly, 5 and 6 were crap "Civ Light for Idiots". But now that I think about it, maybe it would be a good gateway drug for young my kids.

    1. Best game in the entire world is 100% Warcraft 3. Not just because I got it when i was only 5 years old and played the campaign 200 times in the span of a year. It is objectively the best game because whatever game ever existed outside of it can be found within its custom maps. You like playing WoW? There is a custom map. Like playing RPG games like Divinity Original Sin and Baldurs Gate? There is a custom map. Like playing among us? There is a custom map. Like playing survivor type games? There is a custom map. Literaly everything is there. Not even gonna mention the custom campaigns specifically The Chosen Ones. To this day the best D&D experience I have ever played. WC3 is peak of gaming. Everything after that is just an extention.
    2. I love Dragon Age Origin for its writing. The best writing in the genre by far even comapred to its sequels.
    3. Bioshock trilogy is the best FPS by far thanks to its increadible story and plot twists which encompass every sigle game you have ever played as well as the real life.
    4. I guess its time for some honorable mentions which include CS 1.6 and Dota 2 as well as the all time classics which took thousands of hours of my time like the Ensembles: Age of Mythology (yes, over the AoE ones); Sid Meiers Civilization too. Divinity Original Sin changed its genre for a time as well. And there is this one indie game called Pyre which is to this day the only game I gave 10/10 raiting.

    1# World of Warcraft
    - Before this WcIII was on number one. I was super caught in the lore at this time i couldnt believ my eyes making my first steps in Azeroth. Later i got into progress raiding which was the second enlightment and the third was mythic+. In Addition the pet system in WoW was the better Pokemon in my Opinion which was also a lot of fun. There is just so much to do in this game its crazy.
    #2 Warcraft III tft
    - I play ladder from time to time but what really caught me is the campaign and of course the custom scene. At the moment this is the only game iam still playing. Sometimes i scroll through the custom lobbys and cant believe that i still find new and exiting mods i havent played yet. Btw you mentioned unit voicelines, i remembering times when you click one or two times more than necessary on a unit , hearing a line you never heard before ... its just a small detail that shows the love and dedication went into this game
    #3 Halo 1
    - first shooter and first non-handheld game i ever played. Fantastic story and also a super cool custom mod scene and the first time i played online against other real people.I remembering snkeaking to my neighbour to play this over and over because i was like 11 or 12 back than ^^
    #4 Pokemon Heart Gold
    - after playing the earlier Pokemons on Gameboy Calour this blew me away. I spent so much time in this game to fill the Pokedex. I had no Internet back than and therefore the secrets in this game were really secrets.
    #5 Diablo III RoS
-its the same story evrytime a season starts, level up kill bad demons repeat. Sounds fucking boring but it is so fucking enjoyable to slice throught endless amounts of monsters over and over.
Havent found any other Hack and Slay that transports this felling , including Diablo 4.

    - Dungeon Keeper 2 (1999)

      @eldrevo 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

That's a good angle at it!
I double the Northgard take (and the recent Dune Spice Wars too), and from myself I wanna add:
      - Super Monday Night Combat - the perfect hybrid between moba and shooter that we all deserved
      - Battlerite - the perfect controls and feeling for a top-down arena-like game, way more enjoyable than mobas to me. High skill, high pace combat and nothing else
      - Battleborn - the actual good hero shooter with actual hero customization and meta game, and (shocker) a functional coop PVE campaign... which died only because it launched too close to Overwatch and could not compete with Blizzard's marketing and, ahem, power of fanservice

Favorite games are Xenogears, Starcraft 1, Deus Ex, FFVII. I consider Starcraft 1 the greatest video game ever made. Heroes like Tassadar were friggin' heroic and when they spoke, you listened. Same with Zeratul. Even the villains. Kerrigan was kinda cheesy sure, but Duran and the Overmind...chills. You got to play as legitimate bad guys who weren't just "misunderstood."
It's one where you stayed up late reading the booklet that came in the box. You read about this thing called the ultralisk, and you had to have it. Then you read about the carrier...and you were like, "It's the big ship of the strongest race and it can't attack?" But after you saw multiple carriers in action...your life changed.
In time, you didn't need cheat codes to beat the campaign, and you noticed something: twenty siege tanks making an impassable zone of exploding death is even more fun than carriers. Best personality too.

And there is non official plataforms like Untap where you still can play ""like"" paper without any restriction or addicional costs.
MTG Arena is a great way to start, but is not the same game for many factors. The principal to me, is the game is totaly automatic, so you don't need to keep checking your triggers, and this is not the real game, the program doing everything for you. The most fun thing in mtg is exactaly express your creativity despite all the restrictions of the rules, game state, momentum and others players creativity, and this is truly possible only when you became to understand the subtlety of the game - and there's a lot for good eyes like yours.
Ps.: MTG is a path without return. Be careful. xD

    - C&C Generals (regular and even more so Zero Hour)
    - Heroes of Newerth (if Icefrog didn't leave ... where would it be ...)
    - Dota 2 (probably something better than this :P) P.S. I love Valve games: Half Life series, CStrike, Team Fortress 1 and 2, Portal, L4Dead, numerous others, love Dota 2 as well, just feel like it could've been better with a bit of a different approach ... wish Gabe could learn how to count to three but that's a whole other story

Ok, here's the list. Skipped W3 for a reason - is well knowned on this channel. Those 5 games would be maybe not my best, but every one of them has a special reason to be presented. Here we go:
    5. The Chronicles of Myrthana: Archolos - today I'm not that big Gothic fan, but this is an example, how fan-maded content can surpass oryginal. App. 110 h of playing, made by hearth from fandom for fandom.
    4. Heroes of Might and Magic 2 - probably 3 is better, but this one's role of building my love not only for games but for fantasy as well. Atmosphere of the game was just one word: 'MAGIC'.
    3. Dark Forcess 2: Jedi Knight - in the childhood, this game was that same canon and importance for me like the Old Trilogy of Star Wars. Kyle Katarn was hero like Luke, Jerec dangerous enemy like Vader. When I replayed two years ago realized, how they felt the climat of Star Wars, and how they tried to do something interesting with FPS. Climat of agent in space, ventilation shafts sneaking, secret bases, star ships. Small resources and big dreams.
    2. Diablo 2 Lord of Destruction - first time I saw the game, early 2000's and reaction was "OMG, the graphics is like real life!". :D Today unbelievable, but the climat, clarity, dynamic, design of monsters, weapons, magic, it kept my soul and is immortal even today (still can practice hardcore mode on single).
    1. Planescape: Torment - if any game changed myself, it would be definitely that one. Storytelling masterpiece. In final moments You can realize how every part of game was one puzzle in the bigger picture. Game forcing You to face moral and existential questions about Your nature. I'm kind of evangelist of this game, feel obligated to presented, why should be more legendary than it's cousin - Baldur's Gate :)
May the games magic be with us all!

@@spyfire242 my favorite thing in BC was 5v5 arena. I was very annoyed how 5s wasn't taken seriously at least on my server and the first two seasons of arena we went ~90-5 and then couldn't find matches anymore (we would sit in queue for hours at peak hours with no match multiple days a week). 2s/3s felt like rock paper scissors once you got good enough. 5s has the most possibility of variation in strategy, requires the most coordination & teamplay.
Someone invited me to closed beta of Hon and it scratched that same itch as arena (and did a better job of it) so I continued down the moba path. I only played Dota 1 a handful of times. It was definitely in my custom map rotation at one point but I think I played at most 100 games of it.

GREAT LIST! Had some good overlap with your gaming experiences.
You definitely need to add Darkest Dungeon to your list of games to play in the future.
And if you’ve never played Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, or Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic the original, you definitely should take a look as well. And Freelancer which is a a gem, not often enough spoken about. All great story telling games.
And a new game I loved, Rebels Inc. Escalation, is also definitely worth a look.

Settlers 1-4 are also amazing. I played some S4 games last year, maybe I will play some more. I wish its game design flaws were fixed, it would be an amazing game even in 2024 as an adult. The meta of having only 1 cluster of forts to defend, and one stack of doom troops to fight with is somewhat stale.

Played the Knights & Merchants demo as a kid for literal months. One of the most memorable "off brand" city builderish strategy games.
KaM remake got me to play the full game as an adult. Could still sink so many hours into it. Takes a lot of time for one map, but something about it just makes that time fly by. Had to get the classic balance patch for it though; the reworks done by the remake team made it extremely difficult to the point I couldn't even beat a certain mission after days of trying!
Also have fond memory of the older Settlers games. Shame the newer ones went off the rails.

Honestly gameplay wise I never got into the RTS genre but I have such fond memories watching my older brother play Blizzard games that they're in some sort of top 10 for me. I watched him play the entirety of Starcraft, Brood War, SC2, and Warcraft 3. WC3 was especially interesting for me because it felt the most unique; I used to play Command and Conquer and had a lot of fun with it, but WC3 has the hero units, neutral creeps, items, and more factions than most RTS games that made it stand out the most to me as a kid.
Maybe someday I'll try learning how to play an RTS competitively, but whether or not I do WC3 will always have a place in my heart as a timeless classic.

Ranking games is a bit silly for me but I guess if I have to I might put these 5 as my top favorites:
Faeria - Turn Based Strategy (great blend of gaming genres)
Monster Sanctuary - RPG (lots of choices for party members)
MagiCat - Platforming (lots of combat, lots of optional challenges)
Saga Frontier - RPG (a good sci-fi game that has several single player campaigns, I recommend the Remastered version)
Heroes of the Storm - Multiplayer (memories of characters mixed with quick and fun gameplay)
After that it gets harder to add games but I definitely enjoyed a lot:
Lightning Returns:FF13 - RPG (if you enjoyed Starcraft's music you might also enjoy this game's music, and the earlier FF13 games also had great music!)
Super Mario Maker 2 - Platforming/Creative (the main reason I bought a Nintendo Switch)
LeveLHead - Platforming/Creative (a sci-fi version of SMM2, they also do much different from eachother for creative options)
Cosmic Star Heroine - RPG (a good sci-fi game that is very unique for turn based combat)
Bravely Default 2 - RPG (a fantastic blend of Final Fantasy story tropes and a great set of side quests with many build options, it's like a greatest hits of older FF games)
Honestly there are other really good games that arguably deserve to be in top 10, such as:
    Warcraft 3:TFT / Starcraft:BW - Campaign / Multiplayer (for obvious reasons)
Triangle Strategy - Turn Based Strategy (for having a better story than any other RPG I've ever played)
Final Fantasy VIII - RPG (for just being great to explore)
Threads of Fate / Dewprism (same game) - ARPG (for being years ahead of its time)
I wouldn't add Dota 2 or League of Legends because the matchmaking system has always felt corrupted to me. I could replace them with Hearthstone or Shadowverse but let's be honest I don't like those games that much. Instead I'll put in a game for top 15th that I only played for less than 5 hours( I don't want to get addicted to another card game).
Creatures of Aether - Cards (it does what FFVIII did for a card game, but much better)

    #5 Chess
For me chess it’s a video game, I can’t remember when was the last time I touched a real pawn, but everyday I will fire up five or ten blitz games. Chess is exciting, it’s fast, it’s all about thinking quickly, outsmarting opponents and being vigilant, never dropping your guard. I think it’s a perfect game for any RTS lover. It has it all: learning builds, punishing greedy developing, answering threats and setting traps.
    #4 Magic The Gathering: Arena
I’ve been playing mtg since middle school and I just love how junky and funny the game can get, I love understanding it on the deeper level, wielding rules like magic itself to bend the game and do really strange things. I have never payed a dime for Arena and I’m getting to the top mystic ranks every season, because the game rewards good players with tons of cards.
    #3 Morrowind
This game is the one closest to my heart, I sadly did every single quest, visited every place, talked to every npc. I love the unique atmosphere, the secret lore, and how easy and fun it is to abuse its mechanics. The game is not scared to give you incredibly powerful tools and you can really feel like a god, traveling from city to city with a single jump, throwing ten fireballs per second and running faster than the game can load.
    #2 Star Craft II
I haven’t played in years but I still think about SC with lots of love. No other game, not even chess, gave me that much of the feeling that sky is the limit, that I can learn for ever and get better in every single aspect of the game. I treated it really seriously, analysed tons of my games and always believed the results come only from skill, not luck, so I never ever got tilted. Never got to very top ranks so my diamond perspective has to be more rosy than yours.
    #1 Dwarf Fortress
For me this game goes beyond what all other video games are. It’s like from another universe, where game development went totally different way. It is incredibly detailed, no other game can come close. But it’s hard to play, not because of the skill requirements, but because you need to be able to see it properly, to build your own narration. To treat your dwarfs like heroes of the book, to follow their actions and over interpret everything, finding little details that add up to a story that could never be created using different tools. Many people lack this ability and miss out on how invested you can become in the life of your dwarfs.

(I never had much interest in multiplayer games. I was always digging RPGs, Plattformers and later Roguelites. Dota 2 just blew me away though. A billion games challenge you, but the way Dota does just speaks to me.)

The story & characters are amazing and as many probably can agree, it is so satisfying to witness a story that places trust in the viewers intelligence to understand and appreciate what's happening without the need to be blunt.)
    4. Super Mario 64
(Oh, the countless hours lil' old me spend searching every nook and cranny for another secret of the castle. The game is heavily carried by it's nostalgia, it is not nearly as good as the above. But I have many vivid memories of it and how it stimulated my problem solving skills and creativity as a little boy.)
    5. Minecraft
(For the wonderful time I spent with my little brother. The game itself doesn't speak to me too much and I still spend a lot of time full of love and mutual respect with my brother. But our Minecraft times had an unmatched frequency and remembering how he radiated joy of spending the time with me in this game still warms my heart.)

Fantasy empires was such a awesome game! Used to coop in 4 people.
Lord's of the Realm 2 was highly underrated. And old school Kings Quest games were awesome!

I'd love to see Grubby go back in time and play Myth: The Fallen Lords and Myth 2: Soulblighter. You can get free plugins for Myth 2 that allow you to play the TFL campaign missions in the much improved Myth 2 engine.

This one is tough... I don't think anything except Dota 1x6 are really massive jumps in my enjoyment of the game. My biggest metric is replayability value.
    1. Dota 1x6 (Dota arcade mode)
    2. Fallout: New Vegas (with modding)
    3. Darkest Dungeon (soon to be modded after I beat the game on hardest difficulty)
    4. FTL (with modding)
    5. Baldur's Gate 3 (when I get back into it, probably going to mod it too)
You can probably tell I really enjoy modded games and just user content in general xD I may soon get into Darkest Dungeon mods also such as Black Reliquary but I just want to complete the vanilla game on hardest difficulty first.
I can't really put BG3 here with the most confidence since I am waiting for an enhanced edition to get back into playing it as I have only gone through Act 1 and most of Act 2 and have yet to touch Act 3 but I know its got that same Fallout: New Vegas vibe. BG3 also is going to soon have a map editor, more modding support so the well of enjoyment to get out of that game is endless. Maybe if Hearthstone did not try to suck the player of all their time or force them to use microtransactions to play the game I would put it at 5 which may make it the only non-moddable game on here. Or maybe The Binding of Isaac which also has modding support.

5: Gnomoria (similar to Populous that you don't control the characters directly)
4: The Binding of Isaac + DLC (fav roguelite, haven't tried StS yet :D)
    3: OpenTTD (haven't tried Factorio yet :D)
2: The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
1: Golden Sun 1&2 (Was originally supposed to be 1 game, but the GBA cartridge didn't have enough capacity. Would love if there was a fantasy book series released with this game's story)

That's an interesting list. I like the same genre games, but Gnomoria confuses me a bit as #5, because it was abandonned by its developer and does not feel finished. I would put Rimworld as my #1, which is the same genre, but you feel a lot more effort and love from the dev, although in general I also prefer a fantasy setting over sci fi. Still, I would even rate Dwarf Fortress higher than Gnomoria. The other ones are really good games, no doubt about it.

@@Jashinthegiant DF just didn't hook me like that yet, once I'd learn the game, I'm sure it would be amazing. I started playing Gnomoria when it was still being actively developed and I loved it as an unfinished game already. Probably helped that I was following some Let's Players (Danger and Aavak) thanks to whom I didn't have to put any effort into learning the game. Luckily I never had any horror stories with savegames or bugs.
