- In this video I take this vintage 60's Citizen Seven Star watch and attempt to get it running and restored. A very tricky and over complicated 5290 movement proves to be quite a challenge!

Hello to all, my name is Mike, first thank you to Mr. Bolton for his heart warming dedication. Agnes, my aunt cared for Kevin as well as others and I have to say she was right in that he went on aimlessly, but excitedly about things of interest, he was into watches before we talked the first time. I am a digital guy but extraordinary in the machining of these parts, let alone diagnose and restoring them!..Sadly Kevin has no family left and I believe he saw all of you here and I think on social media(?) as family, so amazed at this channel he connected our emails to TH-cam, but with family and a job I don't get much downtime, but I made it happen today. I have subbed because this was so amazing, Michael made this look so easy, and to clear things up, Kevin's favorite actor was Sir Michael Caine and in memory created Michael Kane with different spellings of course, he was a great actor to me as well, you have to see The Eagle Has Landed. I am touched by all the comments on Kevin, at 42 it makes me pause myself .We all have have seen our friends/ family pass but as Binyon penned as with our Fallen soldiers from every country, we will remember them lest we forget. Mr Bolton you do make a difference, more than you know. All Regards. Mike
Hi Mike, thank you for your touching reply. I felt to honour Kevin in this way would be a nice tribute given everyone who watches my channel are into watches or repairs so one big family really. Although I did not know Kevin I will always remember him thought this moment. Also as a reminder to me that my channel is far reaching and can be helping people more than I would ever know. I set the channel up to inspire more people into the hobby and now after 5 years I know I have done that for allot of people, also some to become fellow TH-camrs too! Pass on my regards to Agnes and remember that time is a healer.

Very sad news about Kevin, I am 58 and it just brings it to home how precious life is. Love watching your vids because I love my Seiko's and mechanical watches with a passion. Cheers Retro.
Yes 57 is no age, I turn 50 in a few months so perhaps this is why this hit home to me.

Wow, thank you for this lovely comment. It is sad about Kevin and this also happened to me on a watch I repaired for a guy in the USA. Whilst it was in the post he passed away and never got to see it. It was so sad as he was excited to see a watch that he had bought just aver Vietnam working again.
I realise though emails I have received over the years my channel can be far reaching so this just keeps me humbled yet appreciative of the small influence I can make.

I should honestly confess that I hit the LIKE button because of your SPRING fighting effort. I ruined many watches of mine by losing the spring and cannot find them. I knew how you feel when you take out or put in the spring in place and pray for you when the spring flyover. Nice job and you earned my LIKE button!
Thank you. If you are struggling with springs then use some plastic to cover the movement like a resealable thin bag. You can still just about fit them like this and remove of course makes it easier. If it flies it can’t get out of the bag.

Springs are definitely the bane of our lives in watch tinkering, people just have no clue how unpredictable they are, but seeing the shakes all I can say Mike it’s probably a good thing you didn’t go into bomb disposal! 🤣🤣🤣👍
I agonized with you every step of the way. My heart was racing as I am sure yours was to. Awesome video. I would of giving up on this movement, I just don't have the patience anymore. I like how you stayed with it and got it done, so much anxiety, I'm sure. Condolences to Kevins family, hope you guys had lots of laughs and fond memories together.
I fricken love this. The struggle (I've only worked on a quartz because I thought it would be good practice before I start on a mechanical vintage movement--I did get it back together and working tho) and I'm just an aspiring woodworker TH-camr 😂.

Great job tackling a tough movement! Something that has helped me as I learn the hobby is the tech sheets, AWCI is a GREAT source, for a reasonable membership fee (I have no association with them other than I'm a member), has many, many movement tech sheets. This one was there. I would have sworn looking at the post on that double spring that it may have been in there incorrectly, but looking it up, it appeared correct. A very odd setup for sure. And, I totally get the shaky hands, I have them as well, some days much better than others.
Watching that double spring installation was more tense than the opening scene of Jaws! High tension Mike!

RIP Kevin 😞. I think you have saved me alot of time Mike, at the moment I'm looking at a Citizen crystal seven which I think is from the same period. It looks somewhat similar, I haven't disassembled it yet. But I got all nervous when you showed all of the springs and parts under the date wheel 😄, I think I will be stuck with this through the whole summer :p ... Well done job! Thank you.

@@MyRetroWatches By the way, if I'm very worried about springs flying away even with Rodico I put the movement in a little zip bag and work from the side of the opening, then the spring flyes away in the bag or maybe just goes to the opening where my hand and tools blocks it.

Mike great effort mate. This was a challenge. I can imagine it took a long time to put together. These citizens are a faff. I really admire the effort you put in and I do hope it pays off for the Channel. You have been working hard and it shows, the editing, voiceover and camera angles. Hard work always shows and pays off eventually. Well done fella.
Much appreciated for this feedback this video is already doing 100x better than any other I have posted in over a year. It is clear to me that I now have to use more cameras and do a voiceover rather than my usual ramblings whilst concentrating on the build. I always thought a voiceover was a bit of a cop out but I have been proved wrong. This will be the format of choice going forwards now I feel.
Michael you are really a class act with that dedication, which I took to heart and thought was wonderful. I could tell you more but it would be a little too personal for TH-cam.
And then! - The rest of the video! My goodness! All those springs in there! But just LOOK at the final product, particularly with the strap - it's a beautiful watch and the strap carries it perfectly! Another one of your "mistakes shown" masterpieces and that Citizen 7 is now a beautiful thing to behold. It's really one of my favorites. I know this one took a long time to produce but even with the omissions it's awesome!

Thank you for your kind words Alex. Appreciate it. The dedication was the least I could do for Kevin. Last year I worked on a watch for a guy in USA, a Vietnam vet who had a Seiko from when he left the Army. It had not worked for years. I repaired it and then got covid. It took me 3-4 weeks to recover before posting. He was ecstatic. Sadly though he died suddenly while it was in transit. It took me a long time to get over that myself, knowing that had I gone to the post office even one week earlier he might have seen his watch.
As for this video seems to be one of my best judging by you viewers reactions so I need to keep this style of format up. I actually have a 30 jewel Citizen to do so I might bring that to the channel soon...!!!
@@MyRetroWatches That's a truly sad story and all of these timepieces mean something important to their owners. They're much more than "just" wristwatches, and the work you do here on your channel (along with some others) means a great deal to many of us. Making things work again and restoring them carefully really does matter and it is also a great comfort to some of us, not simply a learning experience. I don't want to overdraw the analogy but it's a profound thing that you are doing. Take care and "crack on!"
I see a silver screw and I want to paint it black. Nice one Mike very enjoyable and complex service, and I now know that screws painted black are left-hand thread.

I still love Seiko movements, they are very accurate if you regulate them i have 3 all within +-1 s/d which is fabulous, Eta's and As movements are great too cheers Mike.
I like watching extremely complicated repairs. This is the best one I’ve seen so far. To be fair, I haven’t seen a chronograph being serviced yet.
Stunning watch with a very interesting spring setup. Just the style I like. Perhaps they didn't want to follow the same path as seiko were doing at that time?

I think Seiko had employed all the good engineers so Citizen got the over thinkers working for them. Solve it with a spring method!
Ive noticed that citizen does their crystals in increments of .1 instead of .5's like normal watches. That case shape is really crackin! Doesnt look aged at all! retro designs are in fashion again.
Thanks Stephen. As my first Citizen it won't be my last despite the challenge. I have another Seven but a 30 jewel one and I think its missing a stem so maybe once I have recovered from this one I will tackle it. Yes a weird crystal size but its like watches I have seen with 17mm lugs, just plain strange.
The more I watched, the more I knew I would have had a nervous breakdown and would have been found crying and slowly rocking on the ground in a corner! I understand the hand trembling because I have that issue and have to stop what I'm doing for a bit so I can just breathe. I love watching your videos so cheers for making it through!
Sad to hear about Kevin I'm a little bit younger with some health issues as well probably is a lot of reasons why people watch your videos my main reason for watching is I love fixing things and fabricating usually heavy steel and machinery everything from chainsaws track machine and last fabricating job I did was a large shed now I spend most days in bed and lately I have started watching how to fix watch videos as realistically I will not be able to do every fabricating anymore even though I still watch a lot of machinery videos and machinist videos in the future I hope to learn to fix watches just to occupy my time and scratch that internal itch of having to fix something and your videos and many others on TH-cam make that possible your videos make it possible and interesting and for that I thank you I know it must take up a lot of your time everybody that watches gets something from it so for that thank you

After watching to the end, I'm hoping that the new lighting and camera angles means more so that you can see better. I actually love the "unedited roughness" of your videos. I believe that makes it feel like we are even more a part of your journey. You mention a couple of other channels, and I like them both. Having just found you this week, it was so nice to see your videos. It wasn't bad in the second half where you narrated later, and I may have too trying to get that movement back together, but I much prefer just hearing you talk while working when you can. Hearing your thought process, ideas, all of that is a great part of this passion. Thanks again! I'll keep watching!
Thank you for such a nice comment Trev. really appreciate feedback and yours is very good. I am and always will be just a hobbyist watchmaker and filmmaker now. I dont do a polished act with sublime editing, its just me in my garage talking to myself and occasionally headbutting the camera. I want to inspire more into the hobby and by being honest and showing mistakes and fumbles that we all make makes it all the more real and believable that anyone with the right frame of mind can do this hobby.

I have recently got into watches, mainly due to a Scot living in Australia, discovered this channel by accident, very interesting.

What a nice tribute to Kevin Bolton. I know of cases where something exciting, like getting into watchmaking, has extended the life of a sick person. I have also seen friends that have passed on posthumously give something back. In this case, I think it was this especially challenging watch that he knew you could fix! This watch is certainly a departure from the usual Swiss-themed movements that seem to dominate the watch world, and watching you service it has been very instructive for soon-to-begin watchmaking adventures. The thing that really strikes me though is how adjusting out the beat error also brought the balance down to the correct rate. I somehow imagine someone less knowledgeable than yourself attempted to service this watch. They used too much oil, and tried to regulate the watch by adjusting the balance spring stud instead of the regulator.

I usually don’t like the voice over but with the original background sounds mixed in like you did this time It was very entertaining. Great shots with the second camera. Have to say, having only done pocket watches with the occasional spring in the keyless works myself, this made me nervous to even watch, I resonated with your nerves and shakes when fitting those springs haha. I think the camera angles were nice, but I definitely like the voiceover. I’d have to imagine it allows you the ability to more greatly focus during the build, which for me personally I feel would help with frustration (one less thing to worry about and all). Plus in a way as you’re watching the video with us, it’s like a DVD extra with commentary which is fun lol. Great job, keep on inspiring!
Thank you so much Ryan. I think I have been doing it all wrong for all these years. Filming and talking is difficult and sometimes I do feel I am just thinking out load. To me at least you would get the natural reaction to a mistake. However the big channels do voiceover and its possibly why they are so big and loved.
It is the way forward I feel. It take more to edit but your right, its like I am watching with you plus I can explain a bit more without the risk of a mistake.

Another good video, funny how the shakes happen. Sometimes I can feel my heart pounding when doing some tricky bits plus the shakes, normally when having a 3rd go at the same part that won’t play fair. The finished watch looks stunning, that case shape is superb. second half of the video worked really well with the 2 views.

Hi Mike, excellent video as always. I'll bet you didn't realise all the people you were helping with your content, and not just with watch rebuilds either.
Really like the new assembly setup and voice over! You lose track of how small these mechanisms really are, but getting a different camera angle reinforces that. Can't tell if the new lights are humming or if that's something else, though...
Thank you for this feedback Andrej. I think it will be the way forward for the restoration videos. Yes there was a hum that I did try to reduce considerably. I am not great at audio yet. It seems my stereomicroscope gives off an electrical hum when plugged in and for the sound capture on the assembly I put the mic very close to the bench on some rodico! clearly it picked up on it. I use a website called Auphonic to adjust the levels through an algorithm its does a fantastic job.
I am working on improving sound for the next restoration.

I worked on a movement like this too. Very complicated, tons of springs and random parts. Great video.
The Seiko 56KS movement used in King Seikos and others is a little like this too with a complicated and a bit over-engineered keyless works and day-date system, but definitely not on the same level as this movement. I think it has about 3 springs and is a little tough but not so bad to put back together
I have a KS somewhere in complete pieces that someone sent me to see if I could rebuild. Not sure the model number though. I will have to check.

This one is a really interesting movement. You would think they would go the traditional route of other Japanese movements used during that time. Wonder if the mystery clip shown in 27:24 is actually whats holding the yoke in place on the other side. Rewinding back it looks like it matches up to that same post location.That might explain why it didnt come out and the post was folded over the way it is.
someone else suggested this and its a good call and something I totally overlooked. I guess I was beaten at that point with the disassembly and then never gave it a second thought.

Man all the parts that are designed to NOT come off?! Why would they do that? What happens when they wear out - you're out of luck. I think this is the worst movement I've ever seen. wow. Your patience is legendary.
Well.. that was a minefield of springs waiting to go off , & the experimental format & cam angles seemed fine to me but must confess as wrong as it may seem.. on assembly i found the whole trembling anxiety & of spring affair absolutely hilarious & was willing you all the way like a backed horse . Well done Mike an appropriate dedication to one iv'e no doubt would've enjoyed this as much as i did . Peace.
Yes its like a watchmakers trap this watch! Im really pleased you liked my new format. I think some parts being narrated over works better than trying to talk and build at the same time which can be quite difficult. I too found the whole hand shaking thing hilarious too and hope everyone can see the funny side to it. Its honestly the last place you want to have the shakes doing those springs!

Great restoration! As for the camera angles, good change up. And the change in voice use, your real time narration does set you apart, but if it takes away from your concentration on the watch, then use it. Cheers Mike!
Thanks for the feedback. I think with the voiceover it might be a combination of both as I do capture sounds on both camera so can edit in my real time frustration if something is going wrong.

Mike I have a 70s Seiko bell-o-mattic I have. It’s beyond my ability. If you want it let me know and I will ship it to you. Really neat gold and the movement auto winds, then you use the crown to wind the spring for the alarm. I found it in my watches and immediately thought of you. That would be a new challenge for you an automatic watch with an alarm. Let me know and It’s yours. I have to many other projects. Thought it would be awesome to see you get it back working right. Plus it’s a Seiko!
