  • I give you my initial review of the Altra Escalante 2.5 after my first runs.
    A great and versatile shoe from Altra i found it fine of speeds from recovery at around 8:00/mi up to faster paced threshold speeds of 6:30/mi.
    Perfect on my tempo run today of 8 miles or 12.8km at 7:30/mi pace.
    I give my opinions on the upper, midsole, outsole and value of this lovely shoe.
    Dont judge a book by the cover.
    Loving the zero drop shoes.
    Let me know your thoughts and opinions in the comments.
    Hold tight people, stay strong and we WILL make it through.

    Mate, I came here for a review of the Altra Rivera 2.5 running shoes and you just sold me on investing in some...and then you go and endorse one of my favourite albums. Spiffing good show indeed. Thrasher is my favourite track from the album and the live show is awesome.

    I love my Telecaster, so I guess I'm buying the Escalantes! Very exciting baby news - I remember those days fondly! Also way cool that you posted about Neil Young. Back in my gigging days in Toronto, we played all the same clubs as Neil - mind you, it was years after he did... but all the club owners would regale us with the stories of Neil and the Rolling Stones playing there!

    Well Edd you have inspired me over time and I have to say over many many pairs of trainers some good and some rather not so good watching this made me think I bought a pair of altra escalante,s when they came out , I found them after around an hour searching behind the freezer,.. 3 runs in I’m so pleased that I have given them a second chance. After getting soaked in today’s downpour I got back back home and thought I like these,.. so I have just bought a pair of 2.5’s it’ll be interesting to see what improvements they have done, keep up the good work Edd 🙂

    I cut my zero-drop teeth on a couple pairs of Altra's Escalante 1.5 several years ago and haven't looked back. Totally agreed with what you mentioned about the drastic improvements to running form/alignment/overall fitness. Glad to hear you had a similar experience :).
    That said, I'm currently running in what I'm pretty sure was one of the last available pairs of Altra's Kayenta. Why Altra discontinued them, I'll never know... Either way, I am going to try to get them to last me until the Escalante 3 comes out this coming summer, though it's good to know that the 2.5 is a strong contender if I end up needing to pick up a replacement pair for my Kayentas before the 3s come out. Thanks for taking time to review!

    Love altra shoes, glad to see your having a good time trying them out as well! Been running in them for about 3 years now, and while I’m not an altra fanatic who only wears zero drop shoes, I do still love keeping at least one pair in my shoe rotation to have some nice variety in my footwear.

      EDDBUD they certainly work your lower legs a good bit more than higher offset shoes, but it’s definitely an advantage to the tech in my opinion, just gotta know to not go overboard as I have found out the hard time a few times before 😅👍🏼

    Fun video and great review. You've captured my exact feelings on running in the Escalante and I'm even wearing a pair at work right now and I often think I'm ready to go if I need to chase or run away from someone. Also love the Beacon and Rebel, all three great, versatile, run any pace, shoes. Gotta go Strat over Tele though.

    Grateful for your review, Ed. I've been searching high and low for a good first impression of the new Escalante. I've really enjoyed certain Altras, and I'm hoping the 2.5 is another win. I could do with some brighter, more interesting colorways though. Forest green? Get the hell out of here with that, give me some bright pink shoes with a sole as black as my heart.

    I love Altras. I started with Paradigm because of foot pain but found I didn’t need all the cushioning and stability. The wide toe box sorted my foot issues and I can run in a more relaxed way.
    I went straight down to the escalante racer which are pretty firm compared to most shoes, took a bit of getting used to but now love them and my legs have definitely got a bit stronger. I’m seriously thinking of getting the escalante 2.5 for longer runs

    I have a pair of Altra Lone Peaks for Trail and then a pair of Escalante's for the road. I have just run a Half Marathon PB in the Escalante after 900km and the mid sole hasn't lost any of the responsiveness and comfort, only the outsole shoes some wear and tear after 900+km. I did all my regular training as well as all my speed work too. Super versatile shoe indeed

    Huge Altra fan here...how did I miss this review from last summer??!! Anyway, I've run in mostly Altras the past 5 years, but have mixed in a few other brands more recently. But every time I put on the Escalante 2.5, I sometimes wonder why I bother with any other shoes since this one always feels so good! Yeah, the initial color releases were pretty drab....but they've added some better ones lately.

  • @AncoraImparoPiper

    If the Escalante is the Telecaster of running shoes, then the NB Rebel is the Stratocaster, in my ever so humble opinion. I've got the Lone Peak 4.5 which I mostly use for walking around and going bush. Very soft and sure grip. LOVE them. I've been considering the Escalante but I do fear the zero drop. Given my delicate feet, I'd have to do very short distances to begin with. Which is probably what I need now anyway considering my left foot problem at the moment and the need for a very slow return to running. I need to hold back the horsepower! Oh, what a grand excuse for another new shoe to add to my arsenal.

    Hey Ed, good stuff. Altra was a pleasant surprise for me as well, I love my Torin 4. They have "different" midsole thought, but as you experienced in Escalante very nice ride. I think every serious runner should have pair of zero drop shoes, it really improves your running form. I'm not sure now if I should get Escalante 2.5 or another pair of Torin 4 ( I should wait for awhile anyway, otherwise Mrs Rocky Runs will kill me)

      @Ian-H76 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rocky Runs question for you based on your comment about improving your running form...I have a pair of Torin 4.5 plush so I’m no skeptic, but one question always troubles me about zero drop shoes....why don’t all the Big brands incorporate zero drop? Asics, Nike generally always 10mm. Other big brands like Saucony and Hoka also do notable drop shoes. So why if it improves your form so much, is it only Altra really pushing the zero drop platform?

    • @TheBostl
      @TheBostl 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Ian-H76 Good question. One of the answers is, different things work for different runners, as Eddbud says, I'm only one runner, I'm only speaking from my experience. But zero drop shoes, especially lower stack ones force you to run more on your toes and midfoot and get off your heel, which makes you more efficient runner and prevents injuries. I think lots of big brands are stuck in their way of doing things. It's good to see that other brands are doing zero drop shoes as well, like Topo and Inov8, which surprisingly made their ultra running shoe zero drop, and it's low stack. For me personally 8mm or higher drop doesn't work.

    Funny to see an Eddbud review from yesteryear! How did these age? You seem pretty fond of the Altra's here, but haven't found the 100 mile review, nor long run test, nor many Altra's in general on the channel. Looking at these to enter my rotation now that they have been reduced significantly with the 3.0 coming out.

  • @randomhajile

    Thanks for a great review. I'm currently running in the Altra One V3 and they are very comfortable, especially that wide toebox and the cushioning.
    I would also like to know what's up with the squashed toes in most shoes? Don't they know the front of the foot is wider than the back? Weird!

    I love my escalante 1.5s I still have two pairs and now I'm trying the plush 4.5 torin next for more cushion as my ankles and bones hurt a little bit at 20 mm... Popping it up to 28 will be awesome! I think the toebox should be even wider at the end where the toes are on all their shoes. It's the main reason Altra is growing.!!! Keep in that width at the end of the shoe like a rectangle Altra. (I keep that material flexible and soft from my pinky toe is as in escalante 1.5). My toe rubs on the material That's why I need the widest toe box!!

    The 1.5 was my shoe at Chicago 2019. I've the escalante 2.0, but did not want to use that for the race as I found it too stiff. Great video! I just got this shoe in a 9.5 and a 10 and am struggling to find the right fit. The 9.5 is a tad snug in the toes but the 10 feels a bit too voluminous (I really have to cinch down the laces to get a snug fit in the mid foot). You mentioned you had to exchange your shoes initially. I'm curious as to what led to your exchange?

    I wanted to love these, they felt so amazing (the feel, the bounce, the cushion, lightweight) on my first couple jogs of a fast pace run of 5-6 miles. I was so excited, made me fall in love w/ running again and purchased 4 more pairs. I felt much faster, lighter, nimble and better posture on my jogs, but 3rd or 4th jog on--my feet, metatarsals, heels and achilles are killing me. I"m wondering if I need to run shorter jogs to get used to these...in the meantime, I'm going back to heavier, very cushioned, comfortable, and more expensive New Balance Fuel Cell RC. I really thought I found something in the Altra....so disappointed. And I even purchased the expensive Nike Zoom X. I'm desperate to find a great running shoe at this time.

      It's the transition to zero drop. Go slow. Incorporate the escalante once a week, then twice a week, and so on. No long runs in the begining. Go slow and take it easy and you'll be sprinting barefoot in no time! Good luck!

    • @jacobedsell8850
      @jacobedsell8850 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As @@robertmorano2372 said. Because of the zero drop, the even thickness in the toe and heel area, it will put more strain on your calves and hence your Achilles. Give it some time and ease into the use of the shoe. As you adapt to it, you will find heavily cushioned shoes are clunky and not as responsive.

    Hello, Edd!
    Great upload (no surprise). I think I’ll take my Altra VanishXC for a 5k spin this week. I bought them for grass drills, but I’m curious as they are meant for fast cross country. They are minimal... even compared to Escalante... and do not appear as durable. That stated - I watched reviews in which runners claimed an entire season or two of races in one pair. I do not anticipate I’ll put that level of abuse on these.
    VanishXC only has short lugs for outsole.
    I’ll do a 5k in VXC and the next day in TS6... ‘let you know how I get on.

      @EDDBUD ‘first 5k (21min) in Altra VanishXC happened this morning. I sent you the typical impressions message. But I also thought it could help to leave impressions here.
      1) Fit is great. They’re snugger than expected, but I’m good with that surprise. Think adizero heel-to-mid with a generous toebox.
      2) Upper is a superior breathing single seam doublemesh. No eyelets - The mesh doubles as eyelets which, in turn, creates outstanding customization. There is minimal structure... mostly overlays. There is a very soft-to-touch padding at the heel, collar and tongue. This minimal approach is at first off putting, but that “doubt” disappears after the first km. Confidence kicks in then.
      3) The midsole is, as you stated with your Escalante, surprisingly giving and responsive in its simplicity.
      4) The outsole has shallow lugs that are giving and gripping enough on-road but truly shine on dirt and grass.
      I’m running in TS6 tomorrow in order to pinpoint how this stacks, but the early verdict is it stacks up well. The adizero range is hard to beat for fit and durability, but this still performs quite well (at $80 USD). I put this down as a 5k-7k road shoe for those tough enough to run in adizero. Don’t worry about the zero drop as your favorite low stack adi already built you the muscles and flexibility to make a go of it. I dig the shoe and will continue plugging it into my 5k days... and maybe fun grass drill workouts:
      ✌🏽🖤🏃🏽‍♂️

    OK, between you and Kofuzi loving this shoe, I’m very interested in trying it. In my early years of running (8-10 yrs ago) I had Merrell’s with zero drop and had not problem with that; it was the near total absence of cushion that got to me. I’d appreciate some size advice since I’d be ordering these because I can’t go into running stores and don’t live near any anyway: I have medium foot width but on the narrower side, and sometimes shoes with wide toe boxes work better for me in my street shoe size (US W 8.5) vs my more common running shoe size (US W 9, in most Brooks, Saucony and NB, eg). I wear 8.5 in adidas since they run long for me, and also did in HOKA Rincon because of the wide toe box. Any advice would be appreciated. Martha

    if you like the wide toebox and low drop you may want to check out Topo Athletic, another brand from Colorado (like Altra). They have more structure and much better arch support and they're better built. I recommend the Flylite3, Zephyr, and for trail the Mt-3 and Mtn Racer.

      Altra was developed in Orem Utah by Golden Harper in his father's running store. Cutting the heel padding off and using glue and a toaster oven to heat them up and then put them back together again. He initially came up with a lacing technique that skips the bottom eyelets making your toes relax and spread out naturally.

    " Shazam" Altra is getting first-time positive reviews by two giants in the running youtube blogosphere. Kofuzi and now Edd. Maybe Emily Heller will try them out next and will get a trifecta. This shoe reminds me of the Nike Free in way it bends and conforms to the natural movement of your foot but with much more cushion and support. This shoe requires a 6 mos. review because as your feet and lower legs get stronger you gain even a bigger appreciation of what this shoe can do in regards to comfort and running proficiency. Injinji running toe socks should be included with each Altra purchase. The combination of the foot shaped toe box and the Injinj toe socks gives you a amazing running experience. Edd, if you want something lighter more firmer but still cushioned and more responsive with a less stretchier and more breathable upper that provides a better foot hold, the Escalante Racer is the way to go especially for running races.

    • @jefreywith1f924
      @jefreywith1f924 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@suspicionofdeceit I'm more into the model and not the brand. I owned and returned the Torin 4.5 non plush because I felt the shoe controled me rather than let my biomechanics control the shoe. Seth received the Escalante 2.0 and never reviewed it as the same with Injinji socks. The Injinji socks worried him, whatever that means. I take shoe reviewer's with a grain of salt. His body, biomechanics and skill level is different than mine. Plus it can take weeks or months for your body and biomechanics to adjust and transition to shoes with various geometries and different materials and weight. The volume of shoes he reviews per month is way to much for a single human being to digest. The more content he puts on youtube the more viewers he gets which is how he gets paid. I don't fault him for that and I watch his channel for purely entertainment value. For me and me only as far as my form, the Altra Escalante 2.5 works better than any shoe I've ever owned and I have boxes of shoes that I've taken to my local running store for disposal and recycling. I'll admit Altras don't work for everybody but their so different from the norm that for some, you have to give them more time.

      Shouldn’t be using support for a high arch. Neutral shoe only, unless you severely supinate then a thin wedge under your 2-5th toes might help but even then less than 1% of runners would need something like this

    Hey Edd, in a shoe shootout between the Escalante & the FF Energy 2, which shoe wins?

    • @paddywiggle
      @paddywiggle 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      FF Energy 2 is softer and has a 9mm drop. Escalante has a firmer feel and a more sock-like fit. It whatever you prefer. The Energy 2 has good width in the toe box, but does taper at the end. Heel and midfoot lockdown is probably better in the Energy 2, but there is nothing more comfortable than the Escalante's upper. If it's both a running and casual shoe, pick the Escalante. If it's just a running shoe and you don't have issues with tapered toe boxes, go for the Energy.

    Durability is 0/3 for me. I had several pairs of Altra Escalante 1.0 and 1.5 and even ran marathon with them. I run with forefoot. After 150km, the outside part of the forefoot outsole rubber would be weared out completely, and the forefoot midsole also compressed to minimal. Besides, the shoe shape is only for Egyptian toe, and feels very strange for my Greek toe with huge empty space for my big toe.
