drill chuck repair / conversion 3/8 - 1/2" chuck

- Hi there this is a conversion of changing out a drill chuck from 3/8 to 1/2. There are various "drill chuck removal" videos on youtube so you can check those out how to remove one. I will say that I could not remove the retaining screw, tried to drill it out. Even then I had to use a cheater bar on the allen key to twist the chuck off. So I twisted it off with the retaining screw and it broke it off. Then the chuck easily came off and the left over bit of screw was easy to remove. For this drill the chuck comes off in the normal direction. Right tight , left loose. The screw is reverse thread(LH) and left was tight.
There was no way to lock the chuck to stop it from spinning. But then I noticed there was a spot for a wrench behind the chuck. But there was no way to slide a regular wrench into that spot. Maybe if you grind one of your wrenches. I took it apart just for the reason so I could lock the arbor down with vice grips. The 1st time I tried to turn the chuck off, the arbor turned in the vice grips chewing the arbor up. BUT the area where the grips are on are not a surface area touching anything.
The new 1/2" chuck was $14 and did not come with a new screw. So if you need a new screw don't forget to pick that up. I did see there was previous grease on the gear box of the drill so I applied some bearing grease and put it back together.
If you are trying to get a drill for a tubing notcher and your 3/8 chuck will not fit try this conversion. - ยานยนต์และพาหนะ
The retaining screw on my drill is a left hand thread. The retaining screw comes out like you are tightening it then the spindle comes off conventionally...True story! A jacobsen keyless chuck on a dewalt drill.

After removing the left hand screw, chuck a big allen key in the chuck and strike it with a big hammer. If that fails, put a hex bit on an impact wrench and chuck the hex end in the chuck. That never fails.
I noticed there was no locktite thread sealant on the broken screw you removed. was it like that already or did you clean it all off for the purpose of the video ?

hello this chuck had a thread of 3/8 x 24 if you search " 1/2" 3/8 x 24 chuck in google you will see some results. But you gotta make sure your thread on your drill is 3/8x24 but i think most are , I don;t want to give misinformation but search "Jacobs 31047" or search in lowes site they also have chucks. The part number on the package was from canadian store so it doesn;t show anything it is 8144396

Where do you buy the left handed screw inside the chuck? ACE Hardware doesn't sell them.
step 1: snap off the left hand thread screw that secures the chuck
step 2: disassemble drill
step 3: put vice grips on bearing surface
don't do these three things
LoL step 4. Whatever you do please do not make a video of your learning process and post it on TH-cam as a master tutorial.
the trick is to watch how you took the chuck off the drill, you started with it already out, not good.

LH screw to secure chuck. Should watch a YT video or two before you 'teach' us how to do it. Look up 'bush league' or maybe you should call your channel that.
It says LH right in the description that has been there for the past 3 years.
First be a master yourself and then make a clean video. Do not waste time and internet bandwidth of the rest of the World. #disgust
