I'm from the UK and managed to buy an unused Rohm chuck at a car boot sale for £2.50. I think the B16 taper had most potential buyers confused. Top quality and has lasted for 20+ years.
Albrecht type chucks are great for drilling but not so much for tapping. They will work for driving light taps but are likely to release the tap on reversal since they’re designed to grip only in the clockwise direction. This can be overcome to some extent by over tightening the chuck, which then becomes difficult to “unloosen”. (Hello Joe Pie!)
Thank you for preparing me for a possible renovation of an allbrecht 1-13 that I have just bought on my local classified for 24 euros plus 6 Eur postage. The ad was " bohrfutter made in Germany " but studying the photo I saw faintly Allbrecht. Maybe I am buying a pig in a poke and the seller knows this but I am banking on the innate honesty of these Austria folks and that I am getting a snip. Here in Austria and Germany this model is around 200 euros without the shank. Time will tell. And now I know how take it apart and clean it. ,Viel Spaß ( Lots of fun)
All chucks are truly expensive nowadays! While Albrecht and Rohm are great chucks, I still prefer Jacobs chucks over any other because I need to feel just how tight I make my chuck grip with a key depending on the task at hand. I have an Albrecht chuck and it is the same age as my Jacobs chucks. My Albrecht fingers are worn more than my Jacobs are and have a lot of slippage whereas my Jacob chucks are not but they both have seen the same amount of usage and were purchased at the same time back in the early 1980’s.

I was taught by a Jacobs sales rep to tighten with all 3 holes in the chuck so it would have taken me longer. Love my Albrecht chuck. I have a Chineesum one that isn’t too bad but no where near as sweet as my Albrecht.
For maximum gripping power and accuracy, he was spot on. In practice, I only use a single hole for most jobs unless it's a bigger drill. I don't associate drill bits with accuracy so I've always ignored that aspect. If I need an accurate hole I normally use a reamer, or a boring head if it's a larger diameter. It's worked well for me over the past 40 years.
I have a Rohm 5/8 capacity. I split the case by drilling with oversize bits. I was able to weld it , and made up an oversize sleeve to take the internal pressure. I only use this chuck in the lathe tailstock. and yes the channelocks are required occasionally . it will now handle my abuse.
The last page of the current Albrecht catalog has a beautiful cut-away picture of their drill chuck which is suitable for framing! I never have trouble with bits slipping in my Albrechts, but larger bits in tough material will over-tighten the chuck requiring the use of a strap wrench to release the bit. This is why for larger bits I prefer the Jacobs Super Chucks, the older American ones of course. Today's quality Asian keyless chucks have a pin hole in the body as an aid to open a stubborn chuck with a wrench or further tighten it for power tapping. I like the newly rediscovered shop table for video production. The old Craftsman lathe is a nice backdrop.
I'm from the UK and picked up a small almost unused Albrecht chuck for £1 at a junk shop! I added an MT1 arbor and it's pefect on my small Emco 5" lathe. Very nice quality chucks.
I've been a big fan of Mr. Pete for a very long time and I know he's a big fan of Albrecht chucks so I've kept my "eyes-peeled ' looking for one at the flea market. However, the only keyless chuck I've ever found was a 0-1/4" Jacobs Impact Keyless, but it seems like a pretty good chuck too.
I definitely prefer a super chuck, hands down. The Albrecht/keyless chucks are certainly convenient, but I've had them tighten under a lot of torque to the point where they're very difficult to get back open. I also have a really interesting keyless Jacobs chuck with brass jaws and a lock ring mechanism. It's different from the "Albrecht" style. Wish I could post a picture of it, you'd probably find it interesting. It's definitely old.
@@mrpete222 Holy smokes, I think you nailed it. I just did a quick web search and it looks very similar to the no. 100 armature chuck. Finally, you've answered a question that I've had since the day I acquired it. I knew that it definitely wasn't a typical "drill" chuck because the brass jaws won't hold a drill under load, it'll just spin in the jaws. Thanks for that!
@@mrpete222 As an aside, I also now know what the chuck that's threaded 1-1/2 x 8 TPI on the back is for as well, they came in the same box of stuff. It screws onto the spindle of a lathe with a 1-1/2x8 spindle nose and apparently works in conjunction with the armature chuck in the tailstock.
@@hersch_toolSears Craftsman sold an armature servicing kit that comprised of both the lathe spindle threaded chuck and the brass-jawed chuck. The set came in a steel storage box.I have both chucks but not the box. Normally you'd support the end of a long shaft with a dead or live center in the lathe tail stock but very few DC motor armatures had the center drilled hole with which to take advantage of a center. That's where the brass-jawed chuck comes in to play. It's a "Center Substitute."

can't confirm this issue with reverse drilling ... perhaps the spindle of your Albrecht chuck may be oily or greasy? (According to the manufacturer the spindle and the cone may not be greased.)
@@carsten4719I guess I never gave it too much thought, and just assumed that applying reverse torque to the mechanism has the natural effect of loosening it. Same principle as running a threaded lathe chuck or a cheap boring head in reverse. I did get mine from eBay so I have no idea if it’s ever been opened up, but it’s perfect in every other use👍🏽 Thanks for bouncing around ideas though, always appreciate that!
Hello Mr.Pete thankyou for this Video. I'm from Germany im using a Rohm chuck on my 1965 Weiler lathe and on my 1965 AEG drillpress. Both chucks let the Drill slip sometimes. Ok they are nearly 50 Years old, so they might slip sometimes. I bought an Optimum drillpress for my homeshop 2 years ago. The included keyless chuck slips from the first day. so I decided to buy an Albrecht chuck one week ago, still waiting for delivery :-). So it's the perfect timing for your video. Btw. ont their website they say, they are the inventors of the keyless chuck.
Hi @mrpete222 -- Greetings from Northern Germany from a very frequent viewer! Have to check out Albrecht, currently I am a big fan of ROHM (actually RÖHM). Last year I made an attachment to use a small ROHM chuck (non-keyless, though) in a multi tool holder (MULTI SUISSE type) on the tool post for precision drilling, instead of using a drill chuck in the tailstock.Inspired by Stefan Gotteswinter.
I am from Germany and most of my drilling can be done with hand drills. I prefer easy to use tools like hand drills with plastic chucks. But I also like experience with tools so I got a chuck with similar appearance like the Albrecht chuck for one of my hand drills. From that experience I can report that it tightens well and it goes down to smallest diameters but it appears that the drill is twice as heavy now and I do not use it much since then. It is always fun to watch your videos and to try out something new.
Ox tools has a excellent video on rebuilding one of these chucks. I had to completely disassemble mine because of how dirty it was when I bought it of eBay. They are extremely easy to work on
@@mrpete222 Would have had all 5 but another guy saw them as well. One for me, one for my father, and the third went to the engineering shop i had do a thread on the cheap chinese drill press to convert the head from taper to a thread to fit the chuck, because this old drill press had a tap on chuck which was cracked. Still got the drill press, and my father used his on a drill, even using it to do masonry work, with this chuck surviving all that abuse fine.
Heh, now I must go and have a look on the chuicks we have at work on our drill presses...they're kind of worn and take a couple of pliers to tension properly, so I guess they're either worn or not Albrecht ones LOL 🙂
In Germany you can buy Albrecht chucks for a fraction in pricing. The main feature besides holding a drill bit is centering. That's where cheap $4 plastic chucks on hand drills suffer most. I allways connected my key T-handles with a string to the cords of my corded hand drills with jacobs chucks. A hand drill with no key was worthless.
I have 2 Albrecht chucks. A 1/2" that I use on my lathe and a smaller 5/16" that I either put in my "jacobs" chuck when doing repetitive drill changes or sometimes in a collet. They are really nice chucks. I wanted to use the larger chuck but the extra length was an issue on my mini mill. Haven't been on YT much lately but I'm glad to see you're still at it. Happy New Year.

Nice video Pete. For me I don't care for the Albrecht chucks especially for tapping holes, they can tighten up so much you can't unscrew them. I prefer a Jacobs Super chuck hands down.

From Germany. Albrecht is well-known as "the" top manufacturer, they also claim having invented the keyless and self-tightening chuck. An "ordinary" Albrecht in a kind of normal size, such as 3-16mm will cost you around 250 bucks in retail (the non-diamond-coated version), which is roughly 60 bucks more than you'd pay for the comparable Röhm (stunningly, the Chinese sell 'em for under 20 bucks nowadays, not sure how). They have a third less runout rated in comparison to Röhm, though. I guess runout isn't really a factor when you cram it into the lathe's tailstock as it's not moving at all, but in the drillpress it might be. Not sure, it's difficult to say since there's so many combining factors (spindle, taper, chuck, crooked drill) involved, and alignment on the taper is random every time, too. Might actually be one runout cancels another, but I guess more often than not they will add up in strange, unpredictable ways. Probably doesn't matter for a 6-8mm hole, but likely does for a 0.5-0.2mm hole. I don't think those small chucks are competitive in any way. Much different from the larger ones which are kind of the best thing on the planet. I own an old Ixion from the ~1960s or so, scavenged from a toolmaker that went bankrupt in the mid-90s. And it has an Albrecht. Which is probably from the 60s, too, but it looks and works like it came out of the box yesterday. As for the Ixion, it's a shame they don't build machines like that any more. Table-top machine, but weights so much a single person can't lift it. 3-phase motor, belt drive, mechanical depth stop, and a single switch, that's it. No blinking lights, no display, no emergency stop. All it does is, well, it makes holes. The small Albrechts look nice, but are outrageously priced, and they don't even produce them with the shanks you need or might need. For example, both of the tiny high-speed Alzmetall and Flott drills come with B16. And high-speed is what you want for small drills. You can get the ultra-precise 800-buck 0.2-1.5mm Albrecht in B06, and that's it. You can get the somewhat cheaper and less precise 0.2-3.0mm version in B06 or B10, but the i6 (and the TB10turbo, too) is B16, so the 0.5-10mm chuck is the smallest one you can mount (without installing a custom spindle). Röhm isn't any better insofar as although you can get the 0-10mm chuck in B16, so you can use smaller drills, the rated runout is, again, higher. For the smallest drills, the runout is 25% of the drill's diameter... so... bleh. Ironically, Albrecht offers a small MK2 chuck which is better and cheaper, and rated for 10k rpm too, but all the available MK2 machines (AFAIK) don't do more than 3000-4500 rpm. Thus, for small holes, it comes down to either a dedicated specimen of one of those windy microdrills, or using an ER collet. Which is more precise, and cheaper, too. Your trouble opening the Röhms after closing it tight is actually marketed as feature. I can't find it now, but they claim so-and-so-many Newton-meters of resistance to prevent it from opening while tapping. Albrecht is bolder, they make the common "strictly clockwise use" and the "closed means closed" (original quote) versions. Not sure how the latter works, don't have that model, probably some button or ring that you can put in "lock" position.
Albrecht chucks are superb. I'm lucky enough to have the 0 -1/6" version, use it on the lathe all the time for drilling very small holes. Very much looking forward to your videos on the Manson lathes. About 3 years ago I did a series of videos on my Manson. Parts 2 to 4 were showing the lathe making chips on various different types of metal. A truly amazing machine. Cheers, Alan.
I guess I am bubba. I use channel locks right on the knurl. LOL. Going through the shop AIR this morning. compressor 5 yr PM (oilless) and moving some things around. I am also Isolating the pony tank. I use truck fittings for my shop air system with 3/8 poly line. I even have one run to each floor of my house.
If you find an Albrecht chuck for sale and it needs service, don't pay too much for it. Repair parts are available, but you are going to pay dearly for them. Look at the McMaster -Carr catalog to get an idea of the repair cost. As mentioned in the comments, avoid using larger drills with heavy work. The chuck will tighten up so much it is impossible open by hand. Leather or lead wrapping may not be enough to get the chuck to release. Bore out an Aluminum block to slip over the outside of the chuck. Cut a slit to the bored hole and drill and tap for clamping screws. A bit of trouble to do, but you'll have it the next time you can't get the chuck to release and you won't damage the knurling on the chuck.
@@mrpete222 They are good. As pointed out, they are quick to use in the job shop. I have an R8 0-5/8" in my toolbox that was a victim of over tightening that's been there for nearly 40 years and I have never been able to bring myself to the spend the $250 to fix it.
I noticed graduations on the smallest chuck. What is the purpose of the graduations? When you asked for comments about future videos on a mini-lathe, I thought you were talking about the common ones sold today. I am looking forward to seeing the older ones.
I'm from Germany, the Albrecht chucks are essentially the "gold standard" for keyless chucks. The Röhm ones are top-notch as well, especially the "Spiro" lineup with a runout of 0,07mm (2.7 thou) where the Albrecht ones have about 0,04mm (1.5 thou). Röhm on the other hand is the standard for lathe chucks with their "Duro" lathe chuck lineup. The keyless chucks are not ideal for tapping applications, if you're looking for that keep a look out for the Bilz DSPL tapping chucks. They are unfortunately very rare, even in Germany, but are about the best tapping chucks money can buy (with new prices easily reaching 2.000€, about $2.200).

I have a Rohm and like it very much. I purchased it at Lost Creek a number of years ago. My grandmother's maiden name was Rohn (long O) and her grandfather came here from Germany. The fact that your Rohm chuck says West Germany means it is indeed not very new.
Cushman also branded an Albrecht-style keyless church that was made in Japan. I have one for the tailstock on the South Bend lathe. It’s excellent. It has a 6JT taper and a half-inch capacity. Typically much more affordable than the German-made chucks.
Sorry Mr Pete, I'll stick with the key on the cord & keep the cash in my pocket. Won't believe it until there's a Torque Test between a Normal chuck and one of these new fangled budget killers.

I have both an Albrecht chuck and a Röhm chuck, both 1/2" capacity, purchased new. I must be doing something wrong, because they don't hold very well. Especially when spinning fast with a small drill. They're sure to drop, and sometimes throw the drill out. They're both on good quality, true running arbors, so I don't think it's that. Any suggestions? Also, I recently got a Tegara keyless chuck, which I think is Shars' premium brand made in Taiwan. Pretty affordable at $50 for the 3/8" size. Very nicely finished satin chrome, and so far I'm quite please with it. But it comes with a hook spanner, so it's not exactly tool free.
A keyed chuck takes even longer than you timed because you have to tighten at all three points to achieve proper tightness. The Albrecht are definitely awesome.
If they're overtightened it's annoying to work with. I also find they wear faster than keyed chuck jaws, and parts are exorbitant. I'd take one or buy with a great price but retail, no way.
One problem with all keyless but not with keyed chucks is that the keyless the tool moves deeper as it is tightened not on the keyed chuck. That becomes important when using a drill chuck in the mill vice to hold tiny parts. I keep some jacobs key chucks just for that purpose.
@@mrpete222 Robin Renzetti has commented on that. For best concentricity use only one pinion, and the same one every time. Obviously she same one you used when truing the chuck up, or grinding the jaws. For best grip, tighten all three pinions. I don't know if it really makes a difference on lathe chucks, but on drill chucks I believe I get slightly better grip when I reef down all three spots. Or maybe it's wishful thinking.
I acquired a Jacobs ball bearing chuck with my last lathe. What a revelation. So much so I have been looking for one to upgrade my pedestal drill. I am in the UK. They just don't come up on Ebay .. except from America. I wonder if people don't sell them because they are so good.

I have a Craftsman drill press that came with a keyless and some times is very hard to open,it is marked 5/8 JT3 but no name on the chuck itself. What's with the brass Kunkle on the bench?
A few years ago, I purchased a used Delta drill press that I found on Craigslist. I felt like it was only an O.K. deal until my neighbor, a machinist dropped by. His fist comment was, "That is an Albrecht chuck. The chuck alone is worth $600."

I have all of these chucks.. I use the Jacobs Portomatic 90% of the time. When they are properly lubed, you can literally fling them open and closed. Much quicker than the Albrecht which is kind of stiff to turn. Albrecht is likely more accurate, not sure.
I had a Rohm chuck too, but don't know what happened to it. I use a cheap Chinese Albrecht copy on my lathe for center drilling only- never had a problem with it.

Haha- about 2 weeks ago I was trying to mount a small bit (5/64?) in the Albrecht chuck on my Logan, and it wouldn't close.I was about to take it apart to clean it, when I noticed that the range was "1/8-5/8". Boy, did I feel stupid!
Since this type of chuck is self-tightening, they will, of course, become self-loosening when run in reverse. A chuck for a hand drill needs to work in both directions, so it can not be self-tightening. You can tell if a chuck is self-tightening by seeing if the jaws follow the chuck body when the chuck is adjusted.
I've never had the chuck on a cordless drill slip (Milwaukee, Ridgid or DeWalt), even in metal, but I have had slippage (and destruction) in older Ryobi drills.
Rohm is also a lathe chuck maker, who made firearms in the 60's.... Sirhan Sirhan used a Rohm revolver to shoot Bobby Kennedy, they were not the best quality....I owned a .22 6 shot western style revolver I bought from Herters back in 1969.....ended up giving to a friend as the main spring decided to sprung......p.s. my 14" Clausing 6913 had a Rohm Chuck on it....
I wish Albrecht would make a model with the threaded top collar like Jacobs makes for Rockwell style drill press spindles. Older drill presses often have imperfect Jacobs tapers and the collared Jacobs chucks will still make up to the spindle.
Not that you need any more drill chucks, but I am very happy with the performance of my Vertex and Llambrich drill chucks. They are not quite as tough on the bank account as well.

Seems like even the high quality keyless chuck slip with larger bit diameters. I tend to only use them with small diameter bits.

Normally you'd support the end of a long shaft with a dead or live center in the lathe tail stock but very few DC motor armatures had the center drilled hole with which to take advantage of a center. That's where the brass-jawed chuck comes in to play. It's a "Center Substitute."

I find it really difficult to center drills in my keyless chuck, but then i got it from banggood and it didn't cost $500.

can't confirm this issue with reverse drilling ... perhaps the spindle of your Albrecht chuck may be oily or greasy? (According to the manufacturer the spindle and the cone may not be greased.)
@@carsten4719I guess I never gave it too much thought, and just assumed that applying reverse torque to the mechanism has the natural effect of loosening it. Same principle as running a threaded lathe chuck or a cheap boring head in reverse. I did get mine from eBay so I have no idea if it’s ever been opened up, but it’s perfect in every other use👍🏽 Thanks for bouncing around ideas though, always appreciate that!

I'm from Germany as well. I have a Röhm chuck on my Bosch hammer drill and it is a piece of crap. It jams and it slips regularly
My 1/2 capacity Albrecht has been used a massive amount, could do with a rebuild, parts were available last time I looked, easy to fit too
Hello Mr.Pete thankyou for this Video. I'm from Germany im using a Rohm chuck on my 1965 Weiler lathe and on my 1965 AEG drillpress. Both chucks let the Drill slip sometimes. Ok they are nearly 50 Years old, so they might slip sometimes. I bought an Optimum drillpress for my homeshop 2 years ago. The included keyless chuck slips from the first day. so I decided to buy an Albrecht chuck one week ago, still waiting for delivery :-). So it's the perfect timing for your video.
Btw. ont their website they say, they are the inventors of the keyless chuck.

Hi @mrpete222 -- Greetings from Northern Germany from a very frequent viewer! Have to check out Albrecht, currently I am a big fan of ROHM (actually RÖHM). Last year I made an attachment to use a small ROHM chuck (non-keyless, though) in a multi tool holder (MULTI SUISSE type) on the tool post for precision drilling, instead of using a drill chuck in the tailstock.Inspired by Stefan Gotteswinter.
I am from Germany and most of my drilling can be done with hand drills. I prefer easy to use tools like hand drills with plastic chucks. But I also like experience with tools so I got a chuck with similar appearance like the Albrecht chuck for one of my hand drills.
From that experience I can report that it tightens well and it goes down to smallest diameters but it appears that the drill is twice as heavy now and I do not use it much since then.
It is always fun to watch your videos and to try out something new.

Ox tools has a excellent video on rebuilding one of these chucks. I had to completely disassemble mine because of how dirty it was when I bought it of eBay. They are extremely easy to work on

@@mrpete222 Would have had all 5 but another guy saw them as well. One for me, one for my father, and the third went to the engineering shop i had do a thread on the cheap chinese drill press to convert the head from taper to a thread to fit the chuck, because this old drill press had a tap on chuck which was cracked. Still got the drill press, and my father used his on a drill, even using it to do masonry work, with this chuck surviving all that abuse fine.
Heh, now I must go and have a look on the chuicks we have at work on our drill presses...they're kind of worn and take a couple of pliers to tension properly, so I guess they're either worn or not Albrecht ones LOL 🙂

In Germany you can buy Albrecht chucks for a fraction in pricing. The main feature besides holding a drill bit is centering. That's where cheap $4 plastic chucks on hand drills suffer most.
I allways connected my key T-handles with a string to the cords of my corded hand drills with jacobs chucks. A hand drill with no key was worthless.

I have 2 Albrecht chucks. A 1/2" that I use on my lathe and a smaller 5/16" that I either put in my "jacobs" chuck when doing repetitive drill changes or sometimes in a collet. They are really nice chucks. I wanted to use the larger chuck but the extra length was an issue on my mini mill. Haven't been on YT much lately but I'm glad to see you're still at it. Happy New Year.

Nice video Pete. For me I don't care for the Albrecht chucks especially for tapping holes, they can tighten up so much you can't unscrew them. I prefer a Jacobs Super chuck hands down.

From Germany. Albrecht is well-known as "the" top manufacturer, they also claim having invented the keyless and self-tightening chuck. An "ordinary" Albrecht in a kind of normal size, such as 3-16mm will cost you around 250 bucks in retail (the non-diamond-coated version), which is roughly 60 bucks more than you'd pay for the comparable Röhm (stunningly, the Chinese sell 'em for under 20 bucks nowadays, not sure how). They have a third less runout rated in comparison to Röhm, though. I guess runout isn't really a factor when you cram it into the lathe's tailstock as it's not moving at all, but in the drillpress it might be. Not sure, it's difficult to say since there's so many combining factors (spindle, taper, chuck, crooked drill) involved, and alignment on the taper is random every time, too. Might actually be one runout cancels another, but I guess more often than not they will add up in strange, unpredictable ways. Probably doesn't matter for a 6-8mm hole, but likely does for a 0.5-0.2mm hole.
I don't think those small chucks are competitive in any way. Much different from the larger ones which are kind of the best thing on the planet. I own an old Ixion from the ~1960s or so, scavenged from a toolmaker that went bankrupt in the mid-90s. And it has an Albrecht. Which is probably from the 60s, too, but it looks and works like it came out of the box yesterday. As for the Ixion, it's a shame they don't build machines like that any more. Table-top machine, but weights so much a single person can't lift it. 3-phase motor, belt drive, mechanical depth stop, and a single switch, that's it. No blinking lights, no display, no emergency stop. All it does is, well, it makes holes.
The small Albrechts look nice, but are outrageously priced, and they don't even produce them with the shanks you need or might need. For example, both of the tiny high-speed Alzmetall and Flott drills come with B16. And high-speed is what you want for small drills. You can get the ultra-precise 800-buck 0.2-1.5mm Albrecht in B06, and that's it. You can get the somewhat cheaper and less precise 0.2-3.0mm version in B06 or B10, but the i6 (and the TB10turbo, too) is B16, so the 0.5-10mm chuck is the smallest one you can mount (without installing a custom spindle). Röhm isn't any better insofar as although you can get the 0-10mm chuck in B16, so you can use smaller drills, the rated runout is, again, higher. For the smallest drills, the runout is 25% of the drill's diameter... so... bleh. Ironically, Albrecht offers a small MK2 chuck which is better and cheaper, and rated for 10k rpm too, but all the available MK2 machines (AFAIK) don't do more than 3000-4500 rpm.
Thus, for small holes, it comes down to either a dedicated specimen of one of those windy microdrills, or using an ER collet. Which is more precise, and cheaper, too.
Your trouble opening the Röhms after closing it tight is actually marketed as feature. I can't find it now, but they claim so-and-so-many Newton-meters of resistance to prevent it from opening while tapping. Albrecht is bolder, they make the common "strictly clockwise use" and the "closed means closed" (original quote) versions. Not sure how the latter works, don't have that model, probably some button or ring that you can put in "lock" position.

Albrecht chucks are superb. I'm lucky enough to have the 0 -1/6" version, use it on the lathe all the time for drilling very small holes. Very much looking forward to your videos on the Manson lathes. About 3 years ago I did a series of videos on my Manson. Parts 2 to 4 were showing the lathe making chips on various different types of metal. A truly amazing machine. Cheers, Alan.

Going through the shop AIR this morning. compressor 5 yr PM (oilless) and moving some things around. I am also Isolating the pony tank. I use truck fittings for my shop air system with 3/8 poly line. I even have one run to each floor of my house.
most importantly adding a drop for my horizontal bandsaw for mist coolant. It is a 6x6 which is very nice

If you find an Albrecht chuck for sale and it needs service, don't pay too much for it. Repair parts are available, but you are going to pay dearly for them. Look at the McMaster -Carr catalog to get an idea of the repair cost.
As mentioned in the comments, avoid using larger drills with heavy work. The chuck will tighten up so much it is impossible open by hand. Leather or lead wrapping may not be enough to get the chuck to release. Bore out an Aluminum block to slip over the outside of the chuck. Cut a slit to the bored hole and drill and tap for clamping screws. A bit of trouble to do, but you'll have it the next time you can't get the chuck to release and you won't damage the knurling on the chuck.
Good idea, but that would be a big job. Maybe these chucks aren’t as great as I thought they were.
@@mrpete222 They are good. As pointed out, they are quick to use in the job shop. I have an R8 0-5/8" in my toolbox that was a victim of over tightening that's been there for nearly 40 years and I have never been able to bring myself to the spend the $250 to fix it.

I'm from Germany, the Albrecht chucks are essentially the "gold standard" for keyless chucks. The Röhm ones are top-notch as well, especially the "Spiro" lineup with a runout of 0,07mm (2.7 thou) where the Albrecht ones have about 0,04mm (1.5 thou). Röhm on the other hand is the standard for lathe chucks with their "Duro" lathe chuck lineup.
The keyless chucks are not ideal for tapping applications, if you're looking for that keep a look out for the Bilz DSPL tapping chucks. They are unfortunately very rare, even in Germany, but are about the best tapping chucks money can buy (with new prices easily reaching 2.000€, about $2.200).

Cushman also branded an Albrecht-style keyless church that was made in Japan. I have one for the tailstock on the South Bend lathe. It’s excellent. It has a 6JT taper and a half-inch capacity. Typically much more affordable than the German-made chucks.

I have both an Albrecht chuck and a Röhm chuck, both 1/2" capacity, purchased new. I must be doing something wrong, because they don't hold very well. Especially when spinning fast with a small drill. They're sure to drop, and sometimes throw the drill out. They're both on good quality, true running arbors, so I don't think it's that. Any suggestions?
Also, I recently got a Tegara keyless chuck, which I think is Shars' premium brand made in Taiwan. Pretty affordable at $50 for the 3/8" size. Very nicely finished satin chrome, and so far I'm quite please with it. But it comes with a hook spanner, so it's not exactly tool free.

A keyed chuck takes even longer than you timed because you have to tighten at all three points to achieve proper tightness. The Albrecht are definitely awesome.
If they're overtightened it's annoying to work with. I also find they wear faster than keyed chuck jaws, and parts are exorbitant. I'd take one or buy with a great price but retail, no way.

One problem with all keyless but not with keyed chucks is that the keyless the tool moves deeper as it is tightened not on the keyed chuck.
That becomes important when using a drill chuck in the mill vice to hold tiny parts. I keep some jacobs key chucks just for that purpose.

@@mrpete222 Robin Renzetti has commented on that. For best concentricity use only one pinion, and the same one every time. Obviously she same one you used when truing the chuck up, or grinding the jaws. For best grip, tighten all three pinions. I don't know if it really makes a difference on lathe chucks, but on drill chucks I believe I get slightly better grip when I reef down all three spots. Or maybe it's wishful thinking.

I have a Craftsman drill press that came with a keyless and some times is very hard to open,it is marked 5/8 JT3 but no name on the chuck itself. What's with the brass Kunkle on the bench?
A few years ago, I purchased a used Delta drill press that I found on Craigslist. I felt like it was only an O.K. deal until my neighbor, a machinist dropped by. His fist comment was, "That is an Albrecht chuck. The chuck alone is worth $600."

I have all of these chucks.. I use the Jacobs Portomatic 90% of the time. When they are properly lubed, you can literally fling them open and closed. Much quicker than the Albrecht which is kind of stiff to turn. Albrecht is likely more accurate, not sure.

Haha- about 2 weeks ago I was trying to mount a small bit (5/64?) in the Albrecht chuck on my Logan, and it wouldn't close.I was about to take it apart to clean it, when I noticed that the range was "1/8-5/8". Boy, did I feel stupid!

Since this type of chuck is self-tightening, they will, of course, become self-loosening when run in reverse. A chuck for a hand drill needs to work in both directions, so it can not be self-tightening. You can tell if a chuck is self-tightening by seeing if the jaws follow the chuck body when the chuck is adjusted.

I've never had the chuck on a cordless drill slip (Milwaukee, Ridgid or DeWalt), even in metal, but I have had slippage (and destruction) in older Ryobi drills.

Sirhan Sirhan used a Rohm revolver to shoot Bobby Kennedy,
they were not the best quality....I owned a .22 6 shot western style
revolver I bought from Herters back in 1969.....ended up giving to
a friend as the main spring decided to sprung......p.s. my 14" Clausing 6913
had a Rohm Chuck on it....

I wish Albrecht would make a model with the threaded top collar like Jacobs makes for Rockwell style drill press spindles. Older drill presses often have imperfect Jacobs tapers and the collared Jacobs chucks will still make up to the spindle.
