    -Minimum / maximum on governor
    -Low air pressure warning
    -Spring breaks supply automatically between 20-45psi
    -Compressor builds air volume in certain amount of time
    -Leak test

      Grandma Likes Everyone Because Grandma's Loveable - Governor (Min); Low Air; Emergency Brakes Apply; Buildup Test; Governor (Max); Leak Test. All the very best, Cheers Rick

      I'm in the process of getting my class 3 drivers license and air brake endorsement in BC, Canada. It is extremely hard and overwhelming to remember everything you're supposed to know as well as just being safe in real life road situations. Salute to all the truck drivers that's been doing this !

    Here's the steps for Ontario from a Z course done at a college. Practical test was done on a dump truck.
    (Remember to narrate to the examiner what and why it is what you are doing)
    Step 1 Brake Adjustment Test
    *Chock wheels
    *Release tractor brakes (push in yellow button)
    *Ensure air pressure is between 90 & 100psi
    *Shut engine off
    *Measure from brake chamber to center of the clevis pin and not distance
    *Apply service brakes using brake stick
    *Ensure air pressure is between 90 & 100psi
    *Take second measurement & note the difference
    *Tell the examiner the distance of travel
    *Front brakes are 16 short with an adjustment limit of 1 3/4" adjustment limit (brake type is vehicle specific)
    *Rear brakes are 30 short with and adjustment limit of 2 inches (brake type is vehicle specific)
    *If any of the brakes exceed their adjustment limit, the truck will be out of service
    *Drain the air tanks (wet tank first) looks for moisture, debris and that the valves reseal
    *If the valves don't reseal, the truck is out of service
    Step 2 Governor Cut In Test (80 psi)
    *Start truck
    *Fan Brakes down to 80 psi and watch for the pressure to rise
    *If the pressure doesn't rise, the truck is out of service
    Step 3 Low Air Warning Test (55 psi)
    *Fan the brakes until warning light and buzzer come on and note the pressure
    *If the warning light and buzzer don't activate by 55 psi, the truck is out of service
    Step 4 Compressor check test
    *With engine revving between 600 and 900 RPM, time how long it takes to build from 85 to 100psi
    *If it doesn't build in less the 2 minutes, the truck is out of service
    Step 5 Governor cut out test
    *Listen for the air dryer to exhaust
    *If the governor doesn't cut out between 100 and 135 psi, the truck is out of service
    Step 6 Air Leak Test
    *Shut off engine
    *Apply brake pedal and note the brake pressure
    *Listen for audible air leaks
    *Time for 1 minute and note air pressure before releasing the brakes
    *Cannot lose more then 3 psi in 1 minute or the truck is out of service
    Step 7 Spring Brake Application Test
    *Apply truck spring brakes (pull yellow button) and hear them apply
    *If you don't hear the spring brakes apply, the truck is out of service
    *If unsure the spring brakes are holding, you should do a tug test
    Tug Test
    *Remove wheel chocks
    *Apply power with the spring brakes applied (yellow button out)
    *If brakes don't hold, the truck is out of service
    Speech
    If I found any defect during these 7 steps, I would fill out inspection book and report to owner.
    If truck is out of service, it is illegal to drive.

    Outstanding video! Excellent presentation, complete and concise instructions and information. I was confident about my knowledge test, apprehensive about the pre-trip test, happy to say I passed today. After watching the video I had my mantras; "Secure, not damaged, not leaking " and "5 pressure tests, two tug tests. Governor in/out, low air warning, pressure up time, auto spring brakes, leak test. Spring break tug, service break tug." That was an easy way to make sure I didn't miss any tests and made it easy to remember what's related to each. One thing extra I had to do; I had to manually adjust one of the brakes for pushrod travel, they were all good so had to adjust one pushrod out of tolerance then fix and measure by prybar. Thanks for this video, you can bet I'm going to take in all the rest of your videos. Very valuable, very generous of you to share.

    Hmm, my state CDL manual says to turn the engine off just before you start the test of the low air pressure warning signal. That would seem to make more sense because the air compressor is trying to replenish the air pressure while the engine is running.

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Steven Litvintchouk - Thank you for your comment. And you are correct my friend. On most air brake inspections, after you do the low air warning test, you shut the engine off to do the emergency brake test. I forgot to apply the spring brakes after adjusting the brakes. The spring brakes were release when going from governor cut out to drop the pressure quicker than pumping the brakes. Spring brakes were released when doing air leakage test and then doing an brake adjustment by 2 full brake applications. This was an airbrake practical. I did everything right expect applying the spring brakes. A brake check was not done after brake adjustment, although we talked about prior when the instructor was in passenger seat talking to us.
    Does draining the air tanks apply the springs brakes if they were not applied? The truck in neutral and on flat ground and the key was off position.

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      As I stated, if system pressure in the secondary and primary tank is drained between 20 and 45psi, the emergency spring brakes (parking brakes) will apply. The large powerful spring are held in the released position by air pressure. If you drain the air pressure, the spring cannot be held in the release position, will expand, and apply the parking brakes. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

    I'm sure this is a great video for Canadian students. However, it is so different for those of us in the US that if you follow this video to the letter you will fail. The pressure ranges are different, and the order in which you do the tests is close to the reverse. If you are from the US, I recommend that you look up a video from someone in the states.

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      What state are you in my friend? Despite an air brake system being almost the same on every truck in the United States, every driving school wants to do the pre-trip inspection differently, and each state has slightly different numbers...not much, but slightly different. Man! The examiner nailed me on the 4-60 test today! In our truck, we must put our transmission in first gear, turn off the engine, release the spring brakes, and press and hold the service brakes for one minute. While i pressed my brakes and the timer was ticking, I noticed my primary air gauge started rising. I thought it was abnormal since I was expecting it to drop maybe like 1 or 2 pounds. But I just continued and I told my examiner: "Ok my minute is up, primary was at 102, it is now at 105, I gained 3 pounds of pressure, it's a good test". But he said that this was a bad reading because the pressure is not supposed to rise. My instructors at school told me it's not necessarily normal for it to rise instead of drop but it does happen sometimes. Is this true or not?? When I released my spring brakes, I did wait for all the pressure to ease off my valves. I even took a little more time to grab my phone, look for the timer app, look for the stop-watch section, and press start. So how much more longer was I supposed to wait?

    Not to be an ass. But check the brand and model as to whether or not you supresse the clutch when firing up. I know some Mack units even newer ones should not have the clutch supressed when firing up the unit. It can be damaging I was told this by a few Mack dealers/shops.
    That said, great video.

      @smartdrivetest  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi TruckStopTV - Apologies for the late response. Nope, not being an ass my friend. I would be curious to know why they think that it would cause damage - you're just separating the engine from the drive train via the clutch. But you're right, not all models require you to push in the clutch to fire up the engine. And for the ole-timer's like me, it's a pain in the butt anyway to push in the clutch. Manitoba does the Brake Application or "Applied Application" that requires that a person, stand on the brakes while you check the push rod travel "from a predetermined point" that is either a fixed marker like a plastic tie or marked with a piece of chalk. There are other differences between provinces. As there are so many differences, any generic tutorial is going to give wrong numbers for other jurisdictions. If someone from one of the other jurisdictions, happens to watch this video first, they could be learning the wrong numbers.
    My comment is that this video like most youtube videos tend to be far to fast with the rate of speech and absent pauses to allow viewers to absorb the information.

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Driven home - Thank you for your query. 80 psi is the absolute minimum according to regulations that the governor must return the compressor to the load phase. Thus, if you let the air pressure go lower, you're not within the parameters of the required test. All the best, Chers Rick

      Hi Todd - thank you for your comment. You are most welcome. In which place are you that they want you to mention if the air compressor is gear or belt driven? Air compressors haven't been belt driven for 40 years!! If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

      Hi matthew bradshaw - you are most welcome my friend. Yes, safety glasses. And I believed those are required for the pre-trip inspection there in Ontario. Have a look at this vid too: th-cam.com/video/dMxilatT0qw/w-d-xo.html All the best, Cheers Rick

    Computers could monitor most of these systems as well as tell you when alarms aren't working. That would save mega time off the road, be saver for all the drivers that don't mess with this anyway, and knock a couple grand off of school.
    Lets bring trucks into 2020.

      I know your comment is old , but the visual and audible alarm means you need to get off the road before the pressure drops to 40 psi and your emergency brake lock up on trailer cause all hell to brake loose

    My examiner failed me on the low air pressure warning device test because I pumped too fast...

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi TheMuddyOne - Thank you for your for letting us know. Sorry to hear about your unsuccessful attempt. Yes, unfortunately if you go too fast, the air pressure will drop below the 55 or 60psi where you need to test the low-air warning and the test becomes void. We're confident that you'll get your license on the next attempt. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

      Captain G - 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 !!! AGREED !!! But still good info to know though.... First time EVER that I had to play a video @ .75 playback speed (on some parts) as opposed to the 1.25 due to most vids where people SPEAK TOO SLOWLY, and TAKE FOREVER to get to the point... 😂😂😂 I’m getting back on the truck due to slow biz with Uber in LA due to the Coronavirus and needed this refresher. THANK YOU @Smart Drive Test for the thorough tutorial. ✝️🙏🏾

    For class 3 do you have to go down to 20-45 til the brakes pop? I wasn’t taught to do that step..

      @smartdrivetest  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, for Class 3 you don't have to see if the emergency brakes apply. Drop us a note if we can help further. Cheers Rick
