  • The Cederberg is a region in the North Western Cape, South Africa, with a unique landscape comprised of deep valleys and red sandstone geology, home to ancient caves and rock art from the Khoisan people who lived here almost 28 000 years ago. It has also become a popular gravel loop and takes the form of a tour through the valleys covering approximately 250kms of varying levels of gravel from sweet hero dirt to gnarly marbles and ruts! And a climb of note everyday.
Day 1 is from Citrusdal to Algeria ( I did plan to go further but the weather had it's own ideas!)
What day behind bars!! Started from Citrusdal and took the Niewoudts Pass into Cederberg.....funny how graphs and routes look so cool on maps and apps!! Almost 20k's of 5 to 8 percent!! Gravel conditions were glorious but weather turned on its head...ended up with roaring tailwind blowing me over the top at 8 degrees C!!! Nearly turned back many times....cramped my entire body!....even my fingers cramped!!!...made it over to Algeria and was meant to go another 25ks up the valley but I was shot, then a pickup arrives with 13 hikers who were supposed to camp where I was going but they closed the site because of the bad weather...so I called ahead, yep, my booking cancelled ...I managed to squeeze in to Algeria and soon had a nice fire going while I sipped cup o' soup and dried my stuff out....it was supposed to get better the next day, had my @#^&*&^! handed to me big time today!
