Just a word of advice for anyone that struggle with razor bumps/burn. When you start using a safety razor or straight razor be sure to use a wet alum block on your face after shaving, using cold water to soothe your skin. Do not apply balm after shaving, instead wait half an hour and use clearisil pads on areas that are irritated. This will make a world of a difference and I’ve seen amazing results so far, the saylic acid really does work its magic
@@muditsharma215 because it defeats the purpose of using salicylic acid to treat razor bumps. Your shaving routine if you have this issue should consist of exfoliating your skin with a facial scrub when you shower, using a light soap or cream to shave straight after your shower using warm water to clean your face between passes to keep your pores open, washing your face with cold water and using an alum block for its antiseptic properties and then treating the aggregated area with clearasil pads whilst they are clean. You should let the saylic acid work its magic for half an hour. Wash your skin after half an hour and use your choice of balm to hydrate your skin after. Personally I find balms too greasy, I much prefer hyraulonic acid

Couldn't agree more with your tips. I have sensitive skin. Would always get irritation on my neck from cartridges. Switched to DE shaving with the rockwell 6C and noticed a big difference. I had to stop using the alum block as I noticed I started breaking out around the corner of my lips with some pimples coming up. I've switched to an aftershave lotion and haven't noticed any issues. Thanks for the advice...I was using the Muhle 41 with an Astra blade (which I don't mind when my Feather razor is the flavour of the day). After watching your video I switched the Astra for a Feather blade. The Astra really tugged at my 3 day old stubble whereas the Feather provided a much smoother experience. The combination of the Muhle 41 with the Feather blade hits the sweet spot.
Fantastic video David. Great tips. One thing to add is to Keep your razor clean. I use mine twice. I could give more comments, but you covered everything. Maybe I will see you at the Maggard meetup? Have a great week. 👍
The biggest thing my routine needed/still needs work on is preshave. One thing I've started doing is continually adding water to that preshave and rubbing it in while I build my lather in the bowl. I've definitely started to see an improvement. You nailed the razor/blade talk. What works for one doesn't work for others but once you find the razor and blade combinations that work for you you'll never go to anything else. I can't do adjustable, but I do have a razor for those times where I have to do a mow job if I go more than 3 days that works a treat after only one pass and minor touchups. One thing I would add to these tips you provided is if your using mentholated products and you start feeling irritation and or a reaction to them either preshave or during the actual shave, stop using those products. If I had to add a 2nd (and one I wish I would have done when I started), trust one pass with touch up only until you master technique. I now am at the point if I rub my face north to south and I don't feel whiskers I'll call the shave done. I can get that after a north to south followed by south to north passes. Again, routine will vary by person. Always a good reminder for new and old alike. Good video.
For skin iritation : use ONLY cold water and a sharp blade. I use only cold water ( not even after shave) and a straight razor....if i switch to warm/ hot water i get irritation and ingrown. Never had a problem since using cold water. Got that tip from an old US shaving guide...

Great video and overview, David! In terms of the post shave, for me, my emphasis is on trying to re-moisturize the skin after stripping it by shaving. After shaving, using my alum block and rinsing it off with cold water after leaving it for about a minute, I tend to use an aloe vera gel (Holika Holika is my brand because it doesn't have a scent and is very cooling) to start moisturizing. Following that, I tend to go for aftershave balms or oils instead of splashes due to alcohol potentially drying the skin out. It is important to not use anything that would dry your skin to prevent further irritation, and a lot of the oils and balms have a ton of agents that help re-moisturize the skin after stripping. I also have been experimenting with the Thayers -- I got a little holiday 4-pack sample set off eBay -- but I think it dries my skin too much after using the alum block (which already tightens your skin), and I think I got a bit of extra irritation after using it for a few days. I'd substituted the aloe vera gel for the Thayers and recently went back to just using the aloe vera gel and I'm not as irritated, so I guess that particular product doesn't work for my skin type, but I'll go back and see. That's the beauty of experimentation and finding out how certain products work for you.
Thankyou for the Advice it really helps.I got into the wet shaving hobby when lockdown started few years ago and I haven’t looked back I love it the whole pre and post shave routine I have a few beginner razors but they’re not adjustable I purchased the Rockwell 6s last month and I love it what a difference plate 4 is my go to plate my favourite.others are good just not below 3.
Thank you for the great content. I switched to Double Edge last year. I've been using a T2 with Cremo shaving cream. For some reason, the soaps almost burn my face. Have a Rex Konsul being delivered this week!
I spent 20 years active duty and had to shave every day during that time minus weekends unless deployed or we had to go in. I had to keep it close to avoid being accused of not shaving. I've always been the guy on the right in the thumbnail due to this. I am now retired so I keep a goatee mostly and shave everything else because eventually I'll get bad irritation especially on the left side. I finally got that Thayers bottle but haven't got an alum block. I need to do that. The aftershave I have is Truefitt & Hill Aftershave Balm Sandalwood. I would like a better razor though. Been using a 2 blade razor from gillette but switched to a safety razor. It's a Merkur 34C I believe but I would like a smaller head for detail. I have to use the gillette for that. I also got those Personna blades. What would you recommend to try to finally get rid of bumps, irritation? Also, since I don't shave every day, do I still use the thayers daily or just when shaving?
Is the pre-shave oil really that important? I can't find it where I live. I am a head shaver and I usually hydrate for exactly 3 minutes prior to shaving and most of the time I get a great shave. However, sometimes the shave is very rough and uncomfortable. My routine is consistent to the tiniest detail. Is there something else I can do if a preshave oil is not an option?
A lot of shavers swear by hair conditioner. I have never used it but a lot of people that watch this channel recommend it. May want to give that a try.
@@OhioShaves I used it instead of shaving cream when I first started out, let me tell you something. It feels like it's doing a great job when it actually isn't. It glides really well to the point where the razor glides over the hairs instead of cutting through them 😂😂 Not a fan, irritation is an issue with it.
Thanks for letting me know. What I do is bloom some water in my ahaving soap puck. I’ll do this for a few minutes with warm water and then pour the bloom water in my hand and apply it to my head pretty much lathering up with it. Once that is done, I load my shaving brush and apply it to my head. What I found is the longer eye head lather The easier it is to shave my head. Especially for me because I might go five or six days without head shaving. Therefore, the hair on the side of my head is very thick.

Hey Dave, another great video. I'm about to switch from Jeremy's v2 - the best cartridge I've ever used - over to a safety razor and was going to go for the Henson AL13 Mild. In this video you advised an adjustable. Can you recommend a comparable adjustable to the Henson's which I know is not adjustable? My skin can be sensitive on my neck but my hair isn't that coarse down there and I thought the Henson Mild is a great way for me to start. I use pre-shave oil, puck soap & boar brush, alum, witch hazel (those last 2 thanks to you) and after shave gel now. Thank you!

@@OhioShaves It turns out both T2 alloy and T2 steel are designed in Canada, manufactured in China, and inspected back in Canada. Given them, why spend $150 more for steel over alloy? I'm not clear on the reasons and the steel is only about 5 grams heavier. Thank you again Dave!
You growing out your beard David? Had a great shave a couple of days ago with a feather and a mild al13 after a week or so of growth. Tried the same this morning and tore my skin up. Still learning what suits me as I need to be clean shaven for my job. I’m also leaning away from thayers already. Proraso’s aftershave lotion has been fantastic for my skin. The small percentage of alcohol in it helps close up nicks better than thayers and my alum in my opinion.
I only use an alum block to repair nicks or cuts. I rinse the residue off my face and apply 2 coats of Nivea after shave balm spaced out about 5 minutes between coats. I top it off with a SPF 50 sunscreen all year round for great skin protection.
@@OhioShaves thanks for the reply. I currently use astra platinum but the blades seem inconsistent. Sometimes a fresh blade is sharp and other times i feel pulling. Do you ever have that sort of inconsistency with a pack of blades? I change them every use like you suggest.
Since I started using a shavette (Parker SRX) I clean the blade off with every use. I apply a thin layer of Vaseline to the blade after it dries, and I can get up to 10 shaves per blade. I also strop every 2/3 shaves.
Hey sir i shave my beards with electric machine the one u show on the picture but not the same And when I’m finished it kinda irritates and after some time ill have razor burns and little white pimples too And I believe it made my skin look like damaged I really want ur help cuz its getting bad And bad
White pimples are ingrown hairs. This is one of the reasons why I switched to safety razors because like you I have a very sensitive skin and I will get ingrown hairs and razor burn all the time using electric razors. Most electric razors you have to replace the blades once a year. If you're blades don't need replaced then you're pretty much stuck with what you got or you could switch to a safety razor. Switching to a safety Razor has cleaned up my complexion and I get very smooth silky shaves.
I get 4 shaves out of my Gillette Platinum blades. GP’s are one of the sharpest blade yet they are much smoother than a Feather. I use CREMO as a pre-shave. I apply it to my face and add water until it’s almost dripping off my face. I then paint the lather over top. I have done an experiment where I use CREMO on half my face and none on the other half. The side with CREMO results in a better shave. Bottom line? Use a pre-shave!!
Im 85. Neither a seasoned pro nor novice. Im hoping to learn how to use a razor to cut hair skin close under my chin. Where if i wet shave i invariably niick or cut due to loise skin or lumpy hairs.
Clubman Pinaud make a "No Bump" oil that has done wonders for me, preventing and treating razor burn, razor bumps, and ingrowns. Highly recommended before aftershave is applied.
A DONT for me was the alum block 🤷🏽♂️ bad irritation A DO was thayers before and aftershave just found that out a week ago and my skin has never been better 🙌🏾
I use a brush, bowl, and shave soap with my Gillette sensitive skin razor (2 blades) end it works perfect. I can also shave with an electric and a straight razor. I have NEVER been able to shave with a safety razor.
Can you shave everyday though without irritation? That's my goal. I can let my stubble grow for 3 days or so and get a good close comfortable shave. But if I shave everyday my neck and jaw gets irritated.
@@OhioShaves I actually asked you a question and would be interested if you could answer it based on my experience which i highlighted in my comment. The reason for this is because in your shave tutorials which are excellent, you always seem to have at least 3 days stubble. Cheers
It’s in the works. I’m writing a script for a November Master Class which will be a 5day series for everyday shavers. The series will include a ton of giveaways the manufacturers have sent to sponsor the videos. Subscribers are going to be shocked on what will be up for grabs. I’m shocked on how many manufacturers want me to use there products in my videos. Most of which I wanted to try. I going to be great.
Way to brass tacks it. This will save people a lot of time in making the switch successfully and this is the video I'll share with my friends who are interested in wet shaving.
Damn my shaving was just off this morning .. did all the right things but after I was done my head looked like the "battle of Waterloo!! An alum block, Witch Hazel and a good aftershave balm did the trick! Used Tabac products for: Pre shave oil Shaving stick After shave balm Aftershave splash Two days growth .. Leaf Thorn and Astra SP (green) blade .. Two passes. Ended with BBS shave .. only a few tiny red spots left after the battle .. 😳😳 😳🤣😅😉
I stopped shaving because i ended up with hypertrophic scars, i was always shaving electric ,my skin is all ruined now. I tried anti-scar silicone creams, but after many weeks there is still no change.
A warning to those who adopt showering before shaving with a DE razor. You will start to view showering as "that which I must do in order to get to the shave." Showering becomes a means to an end, rather than an activity valuable in and of itself. Case in point. If my stubble isn't high enough to warrant a shave, I will wait to take a shower until after my facial hair has grown out enough.
1. Don’t shave long hair, pre shave with an electric shaver on 1. 2. Use a facial moisturizer 3. Shave with preferred razor 4. Rinse razor with alcohol!!!! This keeps your blade sharp 5. Rinse, wash face
I had to laugh at let your skin hydrate. In Boot camp you had 90 seconds to shower and 90 seconds to shave. The best way to do it was against the grain for me.
I like for the viewer to be able to see the razor actually cutting hair. I hate watching shaving channels when it doesn't even seem like the person is shaving anything off their face

Informative and useful video.. Thanks
Glad it was helpful!
Another Good video David!
I appreciate that
3:55 imho the blade gets kinda sharper after the first shave. I use my blades 2-3 times and I feel like the second shave is always the smoothest.
I use a blade one time
I spent 20 years active duty and had to shave every day during that time minus weekends unless deployed or we had to go in.
Maybe a shaper blade. The 34C is a very mild razor. I like the Rockwell 6's for your next razor. That was the path I took

Is 3 minutes under the sink with warm water enough to fully hydrate? Or should I extend it a little bit?
Thanks for letting me know. What I do is bloom some water in my ahaving soap puck. I’ll do this for a few minutes with warm water and then pour the bloom water in my hand and apply it to my head pretty much lathering up with it. Once that is done, I load my shaving brush and apply it to my head. What I found is the longer eye head lather The easier it is to shave my head. Especially for me because I might go five or six days without head shaving. Therefore, the hair on the side of my head is very thick.
@@OhioShaves Noted. Will try that in the next shave, thanks a ton!
Love your videos. Digging the Henson. Have you not done a review of the Supply razor? I’m about to decide which one to buy I don’t know which one to buy between those two.

Greetings from Serbia! 🫵🥇💈🇷🇸
Nice
Thanks for good quality content sir its good thing to learn valuable information from older ones,i recently quit of using Gillette fusion 5 and right now i use saftey razor and its very good its little bit difficult for me at the beginning but after a while i learn how to use it correctly and its very good experience with nacet blade and Wilkinson classic after shave
That's great
Hey Dave, another great video. Thank you!
Henson is great for making the switch. If you want an adjustable Rockwell. Here is some links to save you some money.

@@OhioShaves Thanks for your quick reply!
Well I decided to get the butterfly adjustable and go for broke. Boy is that expensive! So I wanted to buy made an America, and I tried stacking discounts like you said, and they don’t let you do it. So the biggest I can get was 10%. Do you know of any other way I could buy this made an America product but for less?
@@davidplotkin5173 it took them a couple years to catch onto subscribers stacking codes. If you wait till September, they always have a great black Friday sale.
For people who do want a cartridge option, out of the few I tried I think the Mach 3 is great, it makes quick work and is good on sensitive skin
that's why I switched to a safety razor because I have sensitive skin and the razor burn and ingrown hairs are driving me nuts
What razor is he using at the 2:35 mark?

You growing out your beard David?
Had a great shave a couple of days ago with a feather and a mild al13 after a week or so of growth. Tried the same this morning and tore my skin up. Still learning what suits me as I need to be clean shaven for my job.
I’m also leaning away from thayers already. Proraso’s aftershave lotion has been fantastic for my skin. The small percentage of alcohol in it helps close up nicks better than thayers and my alum in my opinion.
Thanks for sharing
Awesome video! I’m going to get some pre shave now! Very good video!
Awesome! Thank you!
I only use an alum block to repair nicks or cuts. I rinse the residue off my face and apply 2 coats of Nivea after shave balm spaced out about 5 minutes between coats. I top it off with a SPF 50 sunscreen all year round for great skin protection.
Nice
What blades do you recommend for merkur 34c
There's a lot of variables. I suggest getting a variety pack from Amazon and test it out on your face. Everyone's a little different.

Hey sir i shave my beards with electric machine the one u show on the picture but not the same
And when I’m finished it kinda irritates and after some time ill have razor burns and little white pimples too
And I believe it made my skin look like damaged
I really want ur help cuz its getting bad And bad
White pimples are ingrown hairs. This is one of the reasons why I switched to safety razors because like you I have a very sensitive skin and I will get ingrown hairs and razor burn all the time using electric razors. Most electric razors you have to replace the blades once a year. If you're blades don't need replaced then you're pretty much stuck with what you got or you could switch to a safety razor. Switching to a safety Razor has cleaned up my complexion and I get very smooth silky shaves.
Hey I have a question when you shave how do you avoid scraping red bumps that are already on the skin?
Use a mild razor.
Something that oddly helped me was turning the tap off between rinses so I could get auditory feedback that the hair was being cut
Love that ASMR

What razor are you using?
Clubman Pinaud make a "No Bump" oil that has done wonders for me, preventing and treating razor burn, razor bumps, and ingrowns. Highly recommended before aftershave is applied.
💈👍
A DONT for me was the alum block 🤷🏽♂️ bad irritation
A DO was thayers before and aftershave just found that out a week ago and my skin has never been better 🙌🏾
Interesting
Can i use vicks for aftershave
Not so. Why do you ask?
great video, I wonder if you can do a video about Razor level of aggression.
I can
I use a brush, bowl, and shave soap with my Gillette sensitive skin razor (2 blades) end it works perfect. I can also shave with an electric and a straight razor. I have NEVER been able to shave with a safety razor.
💈👍
Can you shave everyday though without irritation? That's my goal. I can let my stubble grow for 3 days or so and get a good close comfortable shave. But if I shave everyday my neck and jaw gets irritated.
What razor and blade comb? PreShave oil or cream? Thayers? Alum Block? How long have you beeb using a safety razor?
@@OhioShaves I actually asked you a question and would be interested if you could answer it based on my experience which i highlighted in my comment. The reason for this is because in your shave tutorials which are excellent, you always seem to have at least 3 days stubble. Cheers
@@CaratacusAD I can shave every day without irritation
@@OhioShaves Cool it would be good if somebody did a five day work shave simulation series :) I've never seen a shaving TH-camr do that.
Aylsworth apex coming up soon??
Not on my radar
Way to brass tacks it. This will save people a lot of time in making the switch successfully and this is the video I'll share with my friends who are interested in wet shaving.
Thank you much
Damn my shaving was just off this morning .. did all the right things but after I was done my head looked like the "battle of Waterloo!! An alum block, Witch Hazel and a good aftershave balm did the trick! Used Tabac products for:
Pre shave oil
Shaving stick
After shave balm
Aftershave splash
Two days growth .. Leaf Thorn and Astra SP (green) blade .. Two passes.
Ended with BBS shave .. only a few tiny red spots left after the battle .. 😳😳
😳🤣😅😉
💈👍
I stopped shaving because i ended up with hypertrophic scars, i was always shaving electric ,my skin is all ruined now. I tried anti-scar silicone creams, but after many weeks there is still no change.

Conditioner is the best to shave with, better than soaps/gels/creams/oils-in my experience. No cuts or irritation.
Yeah. It doesn’t work for all of us
Got any good badger brushes, like a man?
I don't care for badger
A warning to those who adopt showering before shaving with a DE razor.
You will start to view showering as "that which I must do in order to get to the shave." Showering becomes a means to an end, rather than an activity valuable in and of itself.
Case in point. If my stubble isn't high enough to warrant a shave, I will wait to take a shower until after my facial hair has grown out enough.
👍
Can you do a review on this safety razor it’s called Bovem Align Razor? Keep up the good videos nothing beats safety razors
I’ll look into it
I usually every two or three days in the evening before i shower.
before you shower
@@OhioShaves yup
1. Don’t shave long hair, pre shave with an electric shaver on 1.
2. Use a facial moisturizer
3. Shave with preferred razor
4. Rinse razor with alcohol!!!! This keeps your blade sharp
5. Rinse, wash face
Thanks for sharing
Alum was a problem for me, it makes my skin red and irritated. Ironically, I can use it as deodorant, but the face hates it 😂.
😂
👍
😃
I had to laugh at let your skin hydrate. In Boot camp you had 90 seconds to shower and 90 seconds to shave. The best way to do it was against the grain for me.
That's fast
if u got ur hair lasered off,
You would have 180 seconds to relax in the shower
My brother. How do you have a shaving channel and let your beard grow for more 7+ days all the time?😂
I like for the viewer to be able to see the razor actually cutting hair. I hate watching shaving channels when it doesn't even seem like the person is shaving anything off their face
Don't shave against the grain only with fhe grain
If you don’t want a close shave
In defense of Gillette. Gillette is good for your hmm...balls xD
🤣👍 Okay
So much better than videos by geofatboy. That clown is boring and isn't helpful at all.
🤣
Avoid it all and grow a beard.
Ah, the ultimate life hack: Avoid all responsibility and just let the beard take over! Who needs stress when you have facial hair?
Fuck cartridge razors.
💈👍
You know if you use a trimmer these problems will all disappear.
They don't get close enough
