    Great segment, thank you! I’ve done multiple ultras, and I’m coming close to cracking the 100 mile code. My only issue is swelling feet after mile 40+. Common advice is sizing up a 1/2 shoe size and using compression socks. Do you have any insights?

      Thanks, Brian! I can't give any valuable insights because I haven't experienced the swelling. I noticed a little swelling on the one 100 mile race i've done, but it also seemed to get better. The half size up method seems ok, but I'd be more inclined to wear my normal size and then have the half size bigger in a drop bag. In all the ultras i've done i've never needed to change shoes!

    Mon, Tue, Thu, Sat.-Easy
    Wed- 2x10x200 meter hills
    Fri. AM- 5x6:00 @3:31per km, 1:45 rests
    Fri. PM- 25xquarter mile, 81 sec, 60 seconds jog rests
    Sun- 13.2 mile long run, 1000 feet of gain, 6:24 mile pace
    Best food to eat while running- spicy chili with sour cream.
    Ultra marathon, probably run one again when I need to do a long run.

      Another solid week of training, Judson! Spicy chili w/sour cream? I don’t know….that sounds pretty good, especially when you’re hours into an ultra with hours to go! 🤣

    Great job last week Matt truly inspiring your energy...down week for me last week felt like I needed some recovery back at it this week, struggling with our Florida heat already...Summer Boston training going to be tough. I’m going to need to invest in one of your hydration packs looking forward to your suggestions.

    Mac and cheese smothered with spicy chili. I tried it in my first ultra... the heartburn was INTENSE!!! I got into ultras specifically because I was showing down, and the high intensity of distances shorter than a half marathon were no longer enjoyable. Constant struggle, injuries, and disappointment for me... slowing down and going long has given me a whole new running life!
    Great week of training, even in that FL heat!

      Slowing down and going long brings a new level of satisfaction to the sport too! Mac and cheese w/spicy chili sounds like an ultra craving for sure! Just remember to pack the Tums!

    Matt, all is going well with running right now. I recently incorporated Zwifting into my training and I'm seeing huge results. I've just been able to step the amount of training without beating my body up. I'm trying to average at least 40 miles running with 100 miles on the turbo and it's feeling good. Ive run a marathon and a 50k so far this year and have a 50 miler on the books for October and the Philly Marathon in November with a BQ being my target.
    Oh btw, eating something nice and spicy, perhaps one of those spicy meat sticks. Hard to digest protein is the way forward to power you through those longest distances.

    I took 5 rest days, and the leg niggle cleared up. So ended very positive, 14 mile long run done in the unseasonal humidity

      So glad to hear your leg discomfort cleared up! It’s amazing what a little rest can do to rebuild and make us stronger.
      Unseasonable humidity? Wouldn’t you say summer is the season for humidity? 🤣 I suppose summer technically doesn’t start for another week. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    Prunes….😂😂😂. I had a minor but painful surgery on June 3rd so didn’t run much at all this past week. I did have 5k race this past Saturday, and was very surprised with my results. I placed 3rd in my age group. 37 overall out of 334 runners….I’ll take it. 😁

    Week's training = appalling, one run in 7 days due to head cold and chest infection.
    Hoping to run my first ultra next year, got my sight set on a 45 miler on the South West Coast path in Cornwall, UK.

      Don’t feel too bad; you’re doing the right thing by your body by taking a bit of time off to get over your cold! You’ll be back at it in no time! 45 miles on the South West Coast path sounds amazing!

      @@its_Matt_B_ it looks epic. I think you're right about the appeal of ultras, I've only done 6 marathons and turned 40 this year, have three young kids (6 and twin 3 year olds) and don't think I'll beat my marathon PB (2.30.04 set in 2016), so I see it as the next logical challenge.

    In the mid-1980's I and some of my army-friends ran 50K's to 120K's, some of them in uniform, just to test what we could do.
    We didn't know it was called Ultra's.
    We just caled it evil ! :-D

    Just run shorter long runs and you can carry less water. 71.1 miles for the week, but you got me beat with your biking.

      That’s a great week of running, and you’re absolutely right about not needing as much water if I run shorter. The only thing is that I don’t often have the time (or the inclination because of the heat) to run doubles, so I’ll have to make do with hydration packs.
      The biking is a good way for me to get my full cardio fix. I’d get injuries in a few weeks if I spent my bike time running.

      😮 I thought other people have had good answers, but this takes the 🍰.
      Vodka makes perfect sense because liquid is easier to digest than solids and everyone knows that nothing hits the spot like potatoes when you’ve been running for hours. 🍸🏃🏻

      @@its_Matt_B_ it was backyard style! There was a 6,12 and 24 hour so I done 12 and then stopped at 9pm because mum brought me a pizza lol! It was 5km loops with trail, sand, stone grass and tarmac bits! I miss my morning runs and there's a few more coming up so I might sign up to another one.. I'll see how my longer runs go!!!
