    Of all the painting tips/tutorials that I've watched, Ninjon consistently shows me new ways to improve as a beginner, without ever making me feel overwhelmed. His video styles always make the techniques he uses feel approachable and achievable with some practice and dedication!

  • @daydam
    @daydam ปีที่แล้ว +52

    I swear, for a moment when you started painting the face I forgot it was a mini, then you twisted the card around and blew my mind. Amazing job on this! Plus the video was super inspiring, I'm starting to plan a full diorama project that's gonna be accompanied by some storytelling on my channel, so seeing this combination of different things you love in this video was extremely cool.

  • @scottanderson8407
    @scottanderson8407 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    This is - without a doubt - the coolest video you have done. Especially because you matched the mini to the card and didn’t take the easier way out of just having one come out any given background.

    • @alamander4444
      @alamander4444 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed 100%. The easy way doesn't mean the best way - it was definitely worth the extra difficulties & "imperfections".

    6:05 OMG! Right?! I used to agonize over 'official' paint schemes to the point where I only used Citadel Colour even though I had so many other options. Now I use Citadel mostly for their Contrast paints but use other brands and mix a lot of my own colors between them.

      I think we all go through that phase.

    • @fanta9377
      @fanta9377 ปีที่แล้ว

      I honestly hate painting most official colour schemes. It really limits the creativity and imagination you can put into a model, when you're just painting white and blue High Elves, or (As much as I love them) red Blood Angels.

    • @theKashConnoisseur
      @theKashConnoisseur ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm glad I started painting miniatures out of an interest in 3D printing rather than wargaming. There's never been any brand pressure on my creative choices since I'm not trying to conform to predetermined lore or box art.

    • @romelalters8078
      @romelalters8078 ปีที่แล้ว

      When I started altering MTG card this is always my problem, I only use cheap acrylic paints with the 6 basic color in it(about $5 in my country) an extra challenge on paint mixing. LOL. But after painting so many cards and experimenting I paint over the picture itself so it can match mine and then the possibilty there is endless. Let them adjust to you LOL.

    • @NickMK
      @NickMK ปีที่แล้ว

      As long you know how to color match, you can get the result you want with any brand.
      Jon here is ummm a bit off with his color match. The magic card's armor is very saturated, deep blue almost purple in the shadows, while the figure was painted with quite a dull blue. But the face and gold look very good.

    True story about the using the rest of the paint in the brush to paint some darker areas. I do it all the time. So much, that sometimes I'm mad, that the paint ended completely, because I need this little rest of it, not a fresh load on the brush. So hard to match fresh paint to this delicious last bit of paint... Great job for the paint job. Always wanted to see something like that, now I did!

    I absolutely love your videos. Did have an idea though.. Could you use a flat piece of plastic for a blister pack, cut to the dimension of the card, to glue the mini into place? You could also use this method to avoid wrecking rarer cards. I Would imagine the glue wouldn't set so fast this way versus the direct-to-card way.

Make pastiche minis after old masters! So many great ideas

    Love that! Have an ancient Magic deck from 1994 including some original rare cards but THIS wipes them all out. So epic. The left shoulder pad drawing looked a little odd as the angle of the Astartes would mean you should nit be able to see the inside of the pauldron but your 3D overlay solved that brilliantly.

Just an idea for a fun side video: I've been painting up pieces for other common board games now that my son is old enough to start playing some of the simpler ones. Not sure about the legality of it all for your videos, but I'd love to see what you could do with ships from Battleship, Monopoly pieces, characters from Candy Land, etc. Even Scrabble tiles could be cool for testing colors next to each other and stylized lettering.
