This started out as a joke, and ended up being the post profound painting video I’ve watched. Seriously, this was an amazing video and really, really inspiring. My hat is off to you sir.
The fact you nailed the "I've been up 4 days memorizing the script and I'm running on all the caffeine in the universe and a dream" look of guys who sell stuff on tv is amazing
Yes, that's why Roman teaches to paint with your fingers. It separates you from trying to be perfect and to loose the fear you sometimes have to paint a model. Happy painting!
If you want to see an artist do this - not necessarily a mini painting artist, but still - the channel Robin Sealark has a video on this. Very informative about potato painting.
All kidding aside, I just got in a set of silicone sculpting tools that I think are too squishy and soft for my intended use (sculpting Apoxie Sculpt for basing). I think they might make great ersatz fingertips for using fingerpainty techniques on smaller models, or up in narrow recesses...hmmm....
@@printandplaygamer7134 I know it's been a month, but... is "Ersatz" something that's regularly used in English? It's the German word for replacement/ stand-in and I've never seen it used in English before. But it would not really surprise me if it was, since there are many German words that made their way into English.
Jon, your channel really developing a unique and fresh perspective on miniature painting. You're not just teaching techniques; you're also showing how miniature painting can be a freeing and artistic form of expression. You're helping me to look at my hobby in new ways. Thanks!
Taken me 2+weeks to watch this BUT i'M GLAD i DID. Love the result and love more the "joy" of not stressing about all the nitty gritty stuff. Thanks Johnny Boy
Recently painted an armoured space ork from Knightmare Miniatures in collaboration with my 3 years old. She threw all kinds of random colours at it, I unified the scheme and did the details and it's a great model, very similar concept to what you're doing here.
Just got my first set of Vallejo paints! Super excited to explore different paint ranges. (I use mainly Citadel) Thank you for the content and thank you for giving the "dreaded paint step" a new and fun twist with each video!
Love this idea for just breaking free of the accepted "tried and true" methods of painting a miniature and finding a better understanding of the fundamentals like colour placement and readability.
That was really awesome. Finished model looks great! The coolest part to me is that your voice over of how you felt, and what you were doing, as well as the way the paint job evolved and finished reminded me a lot of @craftworldstudios. that free style and almost impressionistic look. Bravo!!!
The finished product’s color scheme reminds me of movie theater carpeted walls in the 90s. No idea why, but that’s where my mind goes. Now I want a bucket of Cherry Pepsi and some stale nachos. This looks fun. Great video as always.
For me you are the most interesting miniature painting youtuber. your shirts are awesome, me and my husband wear them when we're downstairs in my workshop. keep up the good work you do! you are very inspiring!
Great video! You really captured that chill vibe I sometimes get when I stop worrying about the finished product and just enjoy the process. And I also got some insight in how to paint better too. You rock!
I love watching your videos man, not only because you're a talented mini painter, but also because your thoughtful commentary goes beyond just the immediate concern and often contextualises the hobby within larger subjects about creativity, passion, life in general and all sorts! (Thinking of your video where you painted the piece for your mum.)
Really cool video. It really resonated with me when you mentioned having joy why painting. It rejuvenate my excitement about painting again. You rocked it! Here is to the genious Roman Lappat!
Sweet! You did a fab job, and it was obvious you had a great time! I've been sitting on a Shambling Mound my daughter got me, and this is exactly the inspiration I needed :D
Dude you toooooo funny, I told Miniac my mom use to be a certified ceramics art teacher and I am so excited to here you tell people to use real tools from nature along with oils paints and other textures. It is awesome. I am so tired of hearing people only have to use citadel here model paint even I have painted ceramics for her that have sat outside in all our seasons from everything from DMC, Folk art, and Apple Barrel with coats of matte or clear coat finish in between. I started painting in my single didgets and now I am almost 50. She still has those same out door and Christmas ornaments. Keep it real with the simple. Makes me want to keep watching.
I first read the title of this video and thought he’s gone mad. Now I have to say nice paint job. Nice colours and layering and highlights. I’m impressed
I have to say, the "letting go" part of miniature painting is something I'm slowly opening up to - And the fingerpainting just seems amazing! But scary! But also really fun!
I know the joke is always "Hur dur you did something silly and it looks better than my real work" But seriously that model looked fucking amazing, always entertaining to watch ya Jon
I think the bright side about painting monsters is that we can break so many of the rules we set overall. Like, if you're painting a Slave to Darkness (like I am), your goal is to be consistent and pick out details and distinguish the difference between the cape and the skin cloak and the armor and the boots and...it's a lot of work. Monsters don't require that same kind of care. You can get messy and screw around and they'll look alright. Hard to do the same thing with a more specific character mini.
Great Video Jon. I've done something similar with a chip brush on a diorama, but I think I like this idea even more! By only hitting the raised surfaces you get so much more instant contrast. Thanks for giving us this neat lesson.
Bonus question, what are your preferred "finger" paints? Did you test some that seem to work best for this effect? Or was there some prep that made it better? Wetting the fingers first?
I enjoyed this, it was a nice journey. Probably one of my favorite Umber Hulk paint schemes I've seen. New Channel name: Finger Blasting: The Joy of Getting Physical with Your Mini.
Got to admit I was hesitant to watch this one, but was so glad I did. I have a whole bunch of LOTR orcs that I don't finger paint but I throw all kinds of weird colour combos at because I just don't care. Those probably end up being my most "joyous" painting sessions and the otherwise rank and file minis look much more exciting for it.
Hey Jon. A cheaper way to get slate: take a walk around a Victorian neighbourhood after a storm and collect some pre smashed roof tiles. Sincerely, a storm wracked Northern England.
@@simbobcrafts4843 today is probably the wrong day for a walk in the Peaks, but yes, you're totally right! And you can get some terrain inspiration whilst out there!
First thought.. "this isn't going to end well" .. when the final display shots come up ... "How in the hell ?!" I'm still baffled but Bravo dude, that looks damn good.
I loved it before you added the contrast paint! Then I didn't. And when you added the extra highlights I liked it again. I think you're right - the contrast should have been a 4:1. I can't wait to buy some bigger figures to try this, too.
That model turned out great with the colour shifts on the sides! I was hyped to try this out, but then I saw the globs of unused paint on the wet pallet and had to reanimate my wallet.
I started watching this video thinking it was going to be a 100% parody/gag video. Turns out it's really some high level shit here. Very interesting exercise. Seems like it would only get good results on larger scale subject matter.
I don’t do tabletop gaming, I just like the videos, but what you said about joy was deep. I make art and it’s just such a pleasure, so much fun and yeah, joy, when you surprise yourself with new achievements. To people who worry about perfection I can only say- this is just for fun! Literally the only purpose or rule is to have a good time. (Also I’m really impressed with how this looked when you’d only used your fingers. Obviously it looks great at the end but I’m shocked it didn’t look like ass after just the fingers)
The guy who taught us how to paint used to make us "paint it wrong." Quit painting it the way you are supposed to and just focus on one thing (contrast, shadows and highlights, whatever really.) The only "rule" was you could not paint it the way it was supposed to look. Really great video hope your holiday rocked. Thanks for sharing.
It reminds me of those shrimp guys that attacked the Stargate Command in a early season of Stargate SG-1. the ones with the mimicry stealth-badges that copied every person, their exoskeleton looked a lot like your mini

Next up, cutting shapes into raw potatoes and using them as a paint stamp for your Warhammer minis.
Why freehand on a squad of 10 minis when u can just create 1 stamp and do an army of 50!!

Excellent choice of model for this, you really worked the organic nature and light effects. Beautiful job.

Really interesting point about variations in sub colours in something like brown. This is a really clear example to me of how undercoats work.
It showed how much you enjoyed this process. Thanks for sharing such a beautiful model and video!
Thanks Ninjon, not only was this an awesome video, but you sold me on the Dungeon Delvers Kickstarter. I went ALL OUT! Can't wait.
The final effect reminds me a bit of what Craftworld Studio are doing in terms of colors. They have such a distinct style.

The fact you only used tools for the base coat, wash, and edge highlights and used finger painting for the rest, that came out amazing!
This turned out amazing! looks so damn good. I can't wait for the homemade airbrush edition (straw in mouth)
