  • "The More I See You" is a popular song written by Harry Warren, with lyrics by Mack Gordon. In 1966, Chris Montez had the most commercially successful and well known version of the song and it is this version that has been used many times in movies, notably at the beginning of the famous club scene in Roman Polanski's Frantic, starring Harrison Ford. Chris Montez's version went to number sixteen on the Hot 100 and spent four weeks at number two on the Easy Listening chart.
    The song was published in 1945, and originally sung by Dick Haymes in the film Diamond Horseshoe. "The More I See You" has been subsequently recorded by many artists.
    Sarah's accompanied by Kirk Stuart (piano), Charles "Buster" Williams (bass), and Georges Hughes (drums). Recorded in Sweden, 1964. (Mercury Records)
    The more I see you
    The more I want you
    Somehow this feeling
    Just grows and grows
    With every sigh
    I become more mad about you
    More lost without you and so it goes
    Can you imagine how much I love you?
    The more I see you as years go by
    I know you're the one for me can only be you
    My arms won't free you, my heart won't try
    Can you imagine how much I love you?
    The more I see you as years go by, go by
    I know you're the one for me can only be you
    My arms won't free you, my heart won't try

I had the great good fortune to see her in concert at the Los Angeles Hollywood Bowl a few months before she left us.She enthralled the sold out adoring audience in what was so much more than a concert. Sarah's style may not be everyone's cup of tea.
    The way she uses her voice to "manipulate" music notes, syllables, words....stretching, caressing, lifting, dropping....you name it.
    Some may prefer Ella Fitzgerald's more direct style or Billie Holiday's angst.
    But there's no denying Sarah's unmistakable voice. Definitely one for the ages !

    • @unclealand
      @unclealand ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Sarah Vaughan preferred to honor melodies and lyrics by playing with them, showing us more of a tune’s possibilities that direct singing might miss. You’re right, it isn’t for everybody, but that’s what creativity sounds like in the realm of jazz singers.

    They say there's no perfection on this planet. Yes, there is some perfection. When Sarah Vaughn sings.

    She is, as they say, "The Divine One". When I listen to her it always brings me to tears. She touches my soul.

    The strange story of a man who, on browsing youtube, stumbled across footage of a Jazz singer on stage in Sweden, over 40 years hence and fell... Deeply in love.

      Jimmy Balantyne , same thing here. Not for nothing she was known as " La Divina"!

      In the final analysis, not so strange at all. Falling in love with "Sassy" is inevitable after seeing her perform and your discovery was meant to be.

    Famous singers like Sarah are instantly recognizable the moment they start singing. Think Judy Garland, Cher, Liza Minnelli, Lena Horne, Peggy Lee, etc.

    One amazing thing about this, is that she took what was a fairly mindless, up-beat, hand clapping, little pop tune at the time, and found a powerful, emotional center for it... one that the songwriter probably never dreamed of.

    • @bhinderbinder
      @bhinderbinder 9 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I totally agree. The original pop tune was zombie-like. Too much bubble-gum. This version, has soul.

      One amazing thing that strikes me is how little you know about the song. Never " upbeat" and "handclapping!"oh well stupidity reigns supreme on TH-cam.

    This era of wonderous vocalists will never again be matched. No over singing melisma. Just a brilliant example of serving the song with deep emotion.
