I'm from West Virginia, and my grandpa, who has cancer, sings this to me all the time. It makes me sad to think he might not beat it and won't be here one day.
Even if you're not American, you can still relate and resonate with what the singer is trying to tell...It's a love letter to your motherland, nature and life.
This was my Grandfather's fav song and was played at his funeral and it the whole family's fav song he was truly an amazing person he will be forever missed ❤️ 💗
Same here I know how you feel my great grandma and great grandpa died in ww2 and this was his last time he heard his favorite song 🎵 and same with my great grandma
I've been a John Denver fan since the early 70's. His music speaks of love, nature, family and everything else that is meaningful to us. He tells stories and talks about his childhood and allows us to take a step back and appreciate the little things in life. His music has helped me get through some difficult times in my life. I encourage everyone to listen to all his great hits. Bet you hear a few that you recall, but never realized they were from John.
My grandpa loved this song. He was an immigrant from Ukraine during WW2 trying to escape the Nazis and the Soviets with his wife pregnant with my uncle. They eventually made it to Mississippi and moved up the river until they made it to Chicago. He had his family grow there though he lost touch with some of his siblings. When I was little he would get so emotional listening to this thinking of his childhood home and I get emotional listening to this because it makes me think of him.
It makes me cry bc i listened to this song on full volume with my headphones when I was child every single day to block out the yelling of my mom and dad fighting 😢❤
A couple of years ago, I was watching a football game that West Virginia won. After a break, the broadcast came back, and, showed the fans singing this song. My friend Sid(West Virginia born and raised) had told me about this, but,it would be the first time I ever saw and heard it . Made me cry.❤❤❤😢😢😢 Now, when I play this, I think of my friend now living in Vancouver, Washington.😊😊😊😊
This song bring back the memory of me and my father who has passed away, when only two of us awake in the car on a long road trip with my family, together listening to this song at night, miss him bro...
Im listening to this at 23,I love his voice,I feel like it actually tells a story, and it's not just mumble rap trash that means nothing.I wish I could have seen him live, but he passed before I was born.
Lots of people don't like country it's just certain country songs that actually tell a good story that are ones people like sometimes it's just most never liked it so they don't even give country songs any chances
This is a great song. I heard it as kid then forgot it over the years. Then I was randomly up all night drinking whiskey with a buddy in Bangkok. At the end of the night we wound up on a fishing dock outside of the city a bit worse for wear with some thai friends. As the sun was rising over the bay our friend Es found a guitar and starts belting out this classic. It was just one of those moments where everything felt right with the world. A moment of clarity.
I’m a classic rock fan, but love this song. I was born in Alabama, worked on my grandparents farm in the summer. They lived in the freedom hills, foot of the Appalachian Mountains. I’ve seen moonshine being made, maybe had a sip or two. :).
when I heard this song I immediately cried because for the past 3 years my family has never gone on a long drive and played this song several times along the way, and when I heard it today I immediately cried remembering all the memories in the past, I hope we can go on a long trip again soon and play this song again
West Virginia is absolutely beautiful ❤ I can totally understand why he is singing about it. The beautiful mountains. What I wouldn’t give to go back my gosh. ✌🏻
I work in Camden but live in the country of southern jersey and as soon as I hit the country roads from the highway I'm home. Nothing better then living in the country
I had John Denver on a flight when I was a flight atendant for American Airlines. He and his staff flew coach. His guitar was buckled uo in 1st class. He gave us all tix to his performance. zero CLASS ACT!

Be damn proud of your heritage, mountain people are some of the best and my kin. Tell Grandpa he’s loved and won’t be forgotten
But he will hear it in Heaven ...
I am also sad about my grandfather's condition 😢😢

Denver was born in NM and died in California. Hardly a country boy.
Rock, country, blues, whichever, a good tune is a good tune. I can throw this in the mix with AC/DC, John Lee Hooker or Waylon all day.

Verse 1]
Almost Heaven, West Virginia
Blue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah River
Life is old there, older than the trees
Younger than the mountains, growing like a breeze
[Chorus]
Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain mama
Take me home, country roads
[Verse 2]
All my memories gather 'round her
Miner's lady, stranger to blue water
Dark and dusty, painted on the sky
Misty taste of moonshine, teardrop in my eye
[Chorus]
Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain mama
Take me home, country roads
[Bridge]
I hear her voice in the morning hour, she calls me
The radio reminds me of my home far away
Driving down the road, I get a feeling
That I should have been home yesterday, yesterday
[Chorus]
Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain mama
Take me home, country roads
Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain mama
Take me home, country roads
[Outro]
Take me home, (Down) country roads
Take me home, (Down) country roads
