I did not grow up on comic books so I have never been a fan/reader. However, it is interesting and fun to hear about them and their history and differences. Another enjoyable visit to Stately Vaughn Manor.

About ten years ago I treated myself to a weighty tome of a book called the Marvel Encyclopedia. Every character in the Marvel Universe has an entry with a backstory. Not only is it a fascinating read, it is a beautiful hardcover book with gorgeous illustrations. They update it every couple of years, so I guess I should get a new one. Maybe I will make some hints for Christmas! I can always use the out of date one as a doorstop! Zorro is beautiful by the way!!

Zorro's involved, invested one might say, given your sartorial excellence. Sweet dog.

Yay Marvel! You sure have a great collection there! Regarding Thor, I think I would prefer The Mighty Thor Omnibus by Walter Simonson. How is Rhonda liking your new doggie? Have a great day!

The Muir Island Saga was my introduction to the X-Men. They were running re/prints in Classic X-Men in the late 80s. With new backup stories set in the same era.

Hi Zorro! 🐶 So so cute and distracting. How can I think about comics when Zorro is here?!
I will be coming back to this to make notes as I need help on where to start with Marvel. I’ve read (and loved) Jessica Jones (Alias, The Pulse, Jessica Jones: Avenger and the three volumes of Jessica Jones) and I’ve rear Defenders and some XMen. No idea where to start on authors other than Brian Michael Bendis basically. 😂

I was there right from the start. The FF was just the coolest" comic! Spider-man was right with the times. Captain America was "the man out of time" even the original X-Men! I might be old but the greatest music and comics came out in the 1962-1970! Thanks for the ride down memory lane!

Excellent recommendations. I like how you point out that starting at the beginning is not always the best introduction to these books and characters. Sometimes it works, but sometimes it's better to jump in when characters have solidified, or a story arc really makes its mark on the title. Thanks also for the nostalgia walk through memories. I remember most of these when I bought them off the rack. Great video.

I am more of a DC guy, but I really don't ever want to be without Marvel. I love both major companies and read both a ton. I have been waiting for these starter kits! This is great, sir!

Great episode, Michael! I have a lot of these comics, but I'm really going to have to pick up some of these Epic Collections. It goes to show how much influence Kirby had on the Marvel Universe and how much we owe him.

I love Zorro!!! He seems like such a sweet, good boy. Waiting for the Marvelous Adventures of Zorro and Roger the Undead Mummy.
This is a great starter kit. I especially like the look of the Black Panther epic collection and the Doctor Strange omnibus. I'll look into getting those in the future.

    Good strong recommendations.
Sadly most are going to discover these characters from movies and tv shows now adays.
My plan when my great nieces and nephew get older is try to repeat the magic of my own total fall in love of comics with a copy of the original Secret Wars. You get an intro of so many characters that hopefully it will peak the interest like it did me and will lead them to find out more about the characters that grab their attention.

Great starter kit, you can't go wrong with these choice picks.
One of the things I enjoy about the early Marvel Universe, with Jack Kirby drawing so many of the comics along with those by Steve Ditko, it mostly had the same visual look which tied it together and unified everything. And of course Stan Lee had his fingers in everything so theres the continuity through the voice of the storyteller too. Considering the FF began as an experiment, a nothing to lose gamble, and how its popularity pathed the way for numerous titles, what a great foundation the Marvel Universe had from its founding fathers.

I need to catch up on your vids. I need to see the DC starter kit as well. I’m curious about your starter stories. Zorro is cute - he wants loving! I won’t read digitally, which is my huge problem. John Romita’s Spider-Man is what I grew up on and it’s just amazing (bad pun). I absolutely love the Epic Collection. Bullseye! Electra! Frank Miller! Peerless.

Great video, I would also add that new readers should know that the early works were products of their time. For example, on occasion, the early FF issues had dialogue that current day readers might consider sexist toward Sue Storm. Additionally, characters often reference their own pop-culture that present day readers may have to look up to understand the context. I would opt to read Hulk from the very beginning to see the character's evolution, its fun! All great material I own in various formats. Thanks.

Great starter kit! I was wondering if the X-Men would show up. I need to get my hands on Frank Miller’s Daredevil. I used to have some of those issues… Oh yeah, speaking of X-Men, how’s that read every issue project coming along?

Wonderful video. a lovely run through some of the key stories of marvel, very good choices for a starter point. I agree, Daredevil / FM is a better starter than the really early ones. Likewise with the X-men

I'm probably most interested Dr. Strange and X-men and Thor, though I'm a little worried to pay too much for these early collections and find them too campy for my sensibilities. I've been getting interesting comics when I can get them cheaper, but more often it's more recent iterations like Ultimate Spider-man (enjoyed the first 4) and Thor: God of Thunder. Do you read many runs like that from the last 20-30 years or are you only about the classics?

    • @michaelk.vaughan8617
      @michaelk.vaughan8617  ปีที่แล้ว

I've been looking to rekindle my love of comics...but my wallet has had other ideas. (It's been off buying three Barnes & Noble Star Wars "leatherettes", among many other Booktube-inspired beauties). I think I need Roger to visit me for a few weeks. Or months. As he has caused most of my recent purchases, I think that's only fair.
