  • Remember when Ryosuke and I went to Hakone a while back (and we did that video eating the "Magical" black sulfur eggs? • JAPANESE FOOD - Black ... )
People seemed to really LOVE that food video. Go figure.
I happened to record a bit more footage that day - so I threw together this video of the best food from Hakone~
(Hakone is a great day-trip from Tokyo. I highly recommend it!)

I LOVE HAKONE!! It's soooo pretty there! :D You guys always get to go to such awesome places!
haha that sulfur smell, somehow I never realized that's what natural onsens actually smell like until we went to a mountain like that, too... It confirmed my decision of not wanting to go to an onsen. :D

Wait..! Rachel, you haven't (and don't regularly) go to onsen? You might seriously be the only person in Japan over ever heard of NOT enjoying the it! 😱

Jon E. I'm not into the whole being naked infront of people thing so... if I'd go to Japan for an extended period of time (lime saaay six months in a language school) I probably won't even try it. Although I wouldn't mind a private one, like the ones you sometimes can have when you stay at a fancy hotel.

+essennagerry not really into be nude in front of others either, but i would definitely try it because of the new experience and as the saying goes "when in rome..."

Makes me miss the time I spent in Tokyo, such awesome food every where, and relatively cheap, generally stuck to eating with locals in the awesome crowded places. Also, juice box sake was a massive highlight for me back in 05.

here in Italy it's pretty typical to eat roasted chestnuts during winter, mainly around Christmas time, or even october/november if you can find good ones to roast...in some places (especially during town fairs and markets) you can also find people that would sell them on the streets ^^

I LOVE chestnuts too! In Turkey, we usually eat roasted chestnuts during winter time. They are being sold by vendors on the streets (roasted) and can be purchased in stores too (unroasted of course). Many people (especially in rural and mountainous areas where houses lack central heating systems) use stoves to heat their living rooms. Roasting chestnuts on the stove during winter time is a typical thing to do in those areas. The taste is also much better when roasted on old fashioned stoves instead of a regular pan.

On the Chestnut question. There was only a small few chestnut trees left due to a blight that hit them hard. So I doubt you have ever had chestnuts before. Only walnuts. Luckily the asian varieties of chestnut trees were resistant to the blight.

I've had chestnuts before, when I was a kid. A chestnut tree grew right between my house and my neighbor's house and we would peel off the spiky outer shell with our shoes, crack open the inner shell and eat the raw nut. Not the tastiest thing, but not the most disgusting thing either. I think I'll try cooking some next time.

lol you don't eat fresh chestnuts. You either boil or bake them (the roasting in front of an open fire dealio would be considered baking them). They are easier to peel when baked than when boiled; knife is needed to peel boiled chestnuts.
