omg thank you for this video. I played the flute for 8 years and I always had a very "unclean" noise because I was breathing from my lungs instead of my stomach. my professor never corrected me for this and I never knew!!!! I wish you were my teacher back then, I have to start again from scratch....

When you say breathing from your stomach do you mean flexing the abdominal muscles to push the air out more concentrated and faster?

(I mean that in a respectful way) out of all the online teachers you are the only one that I viewed that said 1/3 of lip over the hole, that it was helped me get the consistent sound! now I can play a major D scale in 1 day THanks!

I'm a saxplayer trying to get a good sound on the flute. One thing I think is hard is not sounding tense when playing high notes. I can hit them, but they are not relaxed and really nice to listen to. Another thing is playing soft or loud. All my notes except from the really low ones are pretty loud. Thx for these videos!

This is an excellent, informative video. Last night I won an eBay auction for a used Selmer Aristocrat flute. I've played clarinets (and string bass, but that's irrelevant to the point I'm making here), but took up a whole range of brass instruments over the past couple years. I'm getting a flute because it's played differently from the other instruments. However, I have a slight overbite, so blowing at the angle taught here comes naturally to me, and I've noticed that in some ways playing a flute is more similar to playing brass than it does to reed instruments, in two ways: 1) nothing (such as a reed) is added to the metal hardware of the instrument, and 2) the position of the lips is somewhat similar, although looser with the flute because air must pass between the lips rather than causing them to vibrate. During one lesson on a trombone, I was told to "spit out" a note...and I heard a somewhat similar mention earlier in this video.
BTW, in another video that dealt with helping children choose a musical instrument, there was a comment that someone having a "teardrop" shaped upper lip is not a good candidate for playing a flute--I suspect the airstream would be split in the middle to be diverted to either side.
FWIW, I also have a Chinese suona, which 'counts' as a double-reed instrument.

Lauren ur lesson on the aperture was helpful. Still I need to focus the air at that one angle and not spill like u said. I just understood the lip shape . I need to practice the blowing . I am not yet getting it right.
An old man gàve this flute to a friend of mine before his death and it has been lying in my house for 3 years. I've always wanted to learn to play this flute for the glory of God. But I have no money for classes. I am a poor 50yr old woman. Your lessons on fingering and notes would be very helpful dear. You are a blessed young woman and a musical teacher.
Keep me posted if you can and if u have time, Lauren. Your lessons were helpful than some of the others I've seen so far.
