@StickzMen Do you mean different pitches? The harder you blow, the higher the pitch will be. That's how sound/pitch/frequency works. I'll put it on my videos-to-make list so I can explain it more. :)

Love all your videos. Your "down to earth demeanor" and approach will help students feel receptive and not like you are a teacher "talking down" to them. I guess that you and I share the same sense of humor. Thanks again for sharing and keep em' coming.

Your slide whistle antics reminded me of a time back in about 1990 or so when I attended a concert by the Duke Ellington Orchestra under the direction of Mercer Ellington (Duke's son). During one piece the flutist, given to showmanship while soloing, removed the head joint from his flute and continued to play using only the head joint and using his right hand to play the correct notes. Needless to say he received lots of applause. His intonation was dead on. I still don't know how he did it because his right arm was extended with his right hand pretty far from the head joint. Dude knew that flute!!

@romdanbonzie Really depends from person to person. Even flutists who have ended up becoming professionals tell stories about how it took them over a month to get a sound out! But I have had plenty of students who got it on the first try! As for a good sound, you will always be developing that. Tone is organic--it changes with you, with different environments, with different feelings... that's why tone is my favorite thing to work on! :)

You helped me so much! I am a musician who plays many instruments but my main instrument is french horn (brass player) and besides the mandatory recorder in elementary school i haven't played wood wind instruments. After getting my own flute through a GREAT deal (20 bucks for a concert flute that is in GREAT condition) I figured I should learn to play it. This video was a great help and after only watching this i was able to get sound from my flute. THANK YOU

When I first started playing flute 5 years ago, forming a flute embrasure was difficult because I have a birth defect called a cleft lip, so it makes my stream of air off centered and bigger. So I had to teach myself the best embrasure for me. The way my band teacher was teaching everyone else how to play the flute didnt work for me. :( I have got pretty good at the flute over the years, but I am having problems with sounding airy and tone. Watching your videos really helped me though! Because I study how you form you embrasure and how the flute makes a sound to replicate it to the best of my ability. Your videos really helped me improve my flute technique!
I do have a question for you, have you ever heard of circular breathing? Can you do it?

Let me see first of all I am a violinist and I also played viola but I do want to state that your tutorial video was fantastic really really good I can't say enough about enjoying it I was wondering about the head joint and how to blow I seen other ones on people putting piece of paper in their hand and then blown it off yours was very instructional so now that I know when I finally by my flute I should just use the head joint for the first two weeks if you could have next time when you do that one if you do a part 2 of how to blow his then do you have them do an extreme close-up of your lips and just Define word sweet spots on the little hole where you got a blow across it not into it like on an angle I understand I get what you're trying to do but do have really super duper close up of your lips as it touches the sweet spot on the on the head joint where the holes at thank you Robert other than that it was fantastic you're very instructional the video was very clean very nonchalant a liked it and I can't wait to see the the head of the department that you're in for the flutes office and all looks good I'm going to watch the rest of your videos are very very good Robert Haller January 14th 2019 thank you it's fantastic job look very nice too very well tired and dressed very neat and clean and I can't wait to see the rest of your videos thank you remember close-ups of certain things will help thank you

@BrokenByAChord Well, that depends on what you want to do. If it's just for fun or if you can't afford lessons, I don't see a problem in learning via TH-cam tutorials. But if you really want to learn well without making potentially bad habits and if you can afford them, lessons are great because they are meant to be tailored to each student. There are some things that can only be learned face-to-face with a teacher. But maybe I'm just biased because I'm a teacher, haha! ;)

Haha ^_^ it only took me a few minutes to blow properly since I had a really good teacher next to me, but I had no idea you could play Mary had a little lamb using only that. lol, I only practiced the low breathing.

when I'm playing a song do I blow to the tune? or do I let the instrument holes determine the sound?

You do the same blowing for each note (or more/less with octave change) but your flute fingering should make the notes happen, not your airflow

Help :( I'm having a very hard time with this thing. As soon as I start blowing, the sound gradually and quickly turns high pitched. What am I doing wrong?

I agree! Clarinet fingering seems a hell of a lot easier to me... that may just be because I play clarinet though, I guess to a flutist clarinet fingering would be weird.
