Hello, a few days ago I found a flute on sale at a market. Impulsively, I bought it. I followed various on-line teachers without success and for forty-eight hours I struggled to make any sound other than gasping, puffing, swearing all of which my wife found very amusing. Then I found your channel and your explanation helped enormously. I can now play two notes and my spirits rose accordingly. Upon hearing my two, clear notes my wife entered my room, took one look at the screen, saw you and exclaimed, “Barrie, at 86 years you will never change, I knew there would be a beautiful woman somewhere... Should it be kind of a pttttoey as if I’m gonna spit or call someone’s idea bonkers, “oh ptoooooey!?” My throat hurts from all the trying and I just can’t get it. Am I supposed to make a whistle into or across the hole or is it strictly air I’m giving it? I keep flipping back and forth too cuz you don’t show which way to hold it and I’m completely idiotic…is it mouth-right hand-left hand or mouth-left hand-right hand? Even if I pull up another video I don’t know how the camera flips or doesn’t flip the image.
I always tell my students to pretend they have a tiny piece of rice at the end of their tongue, then spit. Sometimes, I even have them start with real pieces of rice before trying to make a sound on their flute. Maybe this is something you can practice to get the right feeling down. As for the way to hold the head joint of the flute in this video. The end cap you can twist should be held by your left hand. Then your right hand will cover the open whole at the other end. I hope this helps! -Rebecca

Just couldn’t do the flute though but it turns out, my lower teeth are false and I’ve read several people say it’s impossible to create a flute embouchure with a denture on bottom and took it out and Whoa is it true. So guess I’ll be finding another new instrument. Just fyi in case it ever happens again with someone you’ll know. Thank you so still though! Even a dentist confirmed. :(

Great question, Brian. Thanks for asking. There are a few different tonguing styles, and this is one of them. It's called the "front tongue" method. Have you tried it yet? IT's a perfect way to learn how to use your air stream and get a nice round sound right away. It's how many people (including professionals) use their tongue. There are definitely place and time to use other styles as well. Things to think about. Thanks again for the comment. Have fun with your flute! -Rebecca
I am a band director who loves using your videos, but this is the one thing that I do not use of yours. Can you tell me more of why you prefer it for your students and for advanced students?

@@LearnFluteOnline bought a flute for 8.99 at goodwill cuz I’m already a harpist and pianist of 30 years. :(
So it's like ur blowing into a mason jar???
Yes! It is very similar to the sound you make when you blow across a glass bottle. You can do this! -Rebecca
It doesn’t work for me. I’ve gotten nowhere
It takes a while but you will get there
Did you get it yet? It takes a little discovery and trial-and-error. You got this! Also, feel free to come over to LearnFluteOnline.com and get the full lessons inside the modules. I'll help you. :) Rebecca
Why do you tongue in between your teeth as opposed to behind your top teeth? Thanks.
Does it help the sound? It seems more labored (probably because i do not practice this way). Thoughts?
Thanks.
Didn’t help me at all
I'm sorry to hear that! Let me know if you have any questions and I can write you a person response to whatever you may be having a hard time with. - Rebecca | learnfluteonline.com
