Reviewing Apple Music Classical - An Honest Review

  • I'm testing out Apple's newest standalone music app, Apple Music Classical. Released in March 2023, this app boasts a vast music library, high-quality lossless and spatial audio, and advanced search options tailored for western classical music.
Some of my favorite features include the ability to search for specific metadata such as opus and catalog numbers, composers, performers, conductors, and more. They also highlight the discoverability features of the app, which led them to discover new recordings of some of their favorite pieces.
I love the clean and intuitive user interface, which includes dedicated pages for composers and curated playlists, like "The Story of Classical." However, they note that the app only covers the western tradition of music history, which may not be suitable for those looking for a more global range of classical music.
Overall, the musician recommends the app for those invested in listening to western classical music and already part of the Apple ecosystem. However, they urge Apple to expand the bounds of what they categorize as "classical music" to include a more diverse range of musical cultures.
If you're curious about the app, I recommend trying it out for yourself with the free trial. Thanks for watching, and let them know your thoughts in the comments!

Apple classical is def an interesting app. As an undergrad composer studying at a Conservatorium, it’s interesting to see which of my teachers are recognised and which are not - one has his whole catalogue visible whereas the rest mostly have just albums their works appear on.
I do appreciate being able to see all the recordings of a work tho because it means I have more options! (I was already an Apple Music user so it’s not like was sacrificing anything to the also use Apple Classical.) - one other cool feature is that you can listen to a piece on Apple classical then in Apple Music it has the last piece you played in Apple Music not classical waiting for you to press play again so in Apple classical you don’t lose your spot… - although it is annoying Apple classical requires an internet connection at all times. - lots of word… hope at least some of it makes sense.

The Naxos Music Library is a comparable and FREE (w/local library membership) classical music app. A bit pricey, otherwise, but a no-brainer if your local library carries the service. It also has a more expanded notion of "classical music". Course, they also have their "World" and "Jazz" music alternatives as well. I dropped Apple Music for NML and haven't looked back. Thanks.

So many musician TH-camrs have mentioned this app (for sponsorship reasons usually) but you’re the only one who has really broken down how it works and I also appreciate you mentioning they haven’t done enough to incorporate a more global representation of “classical” music. 👏

No need for the PC white guilt. The fact is, non-western classical music so far is not really a thing even in their own territory. I'm Chinese, and my country is supposably one of the most cultural rich place outside the European region. Yet, the recorded pieces of classically composed music is pathetic to say the least. Most of the composition has lost in time, and the very few that still exist are not known to even the locals. It is not systematically organized, and not played by many modern performers. If China (incredibly nationalist) is like this, I can only imagine other region with shorter history, the music records are going to be scattered, waiting to be modernized, waiting to be performed and recorded. And that is not white people's fault, because we ourselves don't even show the respect or effort. You cannot represent something that is not there, and it is not fair to ask the white people to do things for us that ourselves made no effort. Until other non-western population made stride on organizing our own classical music, let the Apple Music Classical to keep their name, their deserve it.
