You mean the orange lasers? Lasers ;-) They create artificial stars high up in the atmosphere that we can use to create sharper images (basically removing the atmospheric turbulence with a technique called 'adaptive optics', in case you want to google it)

@@andrewwright. I have no idea what laser they use, but I very much doubt it. No idea why it wasn't documented more. There were press releases when they were going into operations, but maybe they weren't picked up much. They are certainly no secret.
