I'm 34 years old and I appreciate being in my 30s WAY more than my 20s which were just an awkward, depressing time of my life. The only downside to being in my 30s is being told by people in their early 20s that I'm old! haha. I haven't read most of the books that you listed except Atonement which is just heartbreaking.

I turned 30 earlier this year, and I was scared! But I am in a much better place now than I was ten years ago or for the majority of my 20s. I think the 30s are the best decade of your life. I feel a lot more grounded and settled into adulthood. I feel like I have arrived. I have skills and experiences I didn’t have when I turned 20, I’m still young and (mentally at least) youthful but with a certain maturity. Turning 30 made me feel strong and brought me closer to myself (also after giving my 20s a long reflective thought).

Cloud Atlas is so good! David Mitchell has reoccurring characters throughout his books so they all link together, it's very cool!

I remember turning 30 and feeling finally like a real adult. I'm 40 now. Time just seems fly by so fast this days.
I remember hearing or reading about Into the Wild. I think I've seen a documentary about it. I recall finding it really interesting.

Another Memoir that I would recommend is A Ghost in the Throat. The language is beautiful, and the format is interesting. It may be right up your alley. Call me by your Name and The Year of Magical Thinking were very well done, the follow-ups however were disappointing so I would just stick to the first works if I were you. Into the Wild was also a good read and very short. If you enjoy it or even if you don't the adaptation with Emile Hirsch is worth a watch. Happy Wednesday.

Just started my thirties, but I'm feeling far more centered and content of late than during my more tumultuous twenties. Good luck with the decade and with picking up these books! Haven't read any of them, but a couple have piqued my interest before.

I read Cloud Atlas in my late 20s and I loved it. It's been described as a narrative nesting dolls, and it's so delightful. I never read Into The Wild but I read one of Krakauer's other books Into Thin Air about his trek up Everest and it was amazing! It was an English class book in highschool and I've read again since.

you and i are on the same wavelength! i turned 30 back in october and it was such a feeling of vindication after 5 years of being like "im tired of my 20s, please let me be 30 already" so far, mine's going great, and i hope yours do too!

So many interesting-looking books I haven't read! I loved the book Into the Wild, and I also love Into Thin Air by the same author. I think you would love both books given your passion for exploring nature! 🤍🌿

Cloud Atlas and Atonement! Hell yeah! Mitchell and McEwan (imagine he's a Scottish female sheep and you'll get the name right) both have such a strong command of the English language! I was going to write authorial voice, but honestly Mitchell's voice gets drowned in his character's voices. I'm on my sixth Mitchell of the year right now (The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet), and I'm really hoping he finishes the next book in his Über-novel soon, because I only have two to go!

Not yet 30 myself (26 currently), but there are so many great books on this list! Convenience Store Woman was one of my favourite reads in 2021, and David Mitchell is one of my all time favourite authors (to be honest, I didn't even enjoy Cloud Atlas that much so definitely check out his other works too if you have the time!). Americanah was great too, and Call Me By Your Name I read a while ago but I remember really enjoying it. Haven't read Into The Wild, so can't comment on the literary quality, but the movie was absolutely fantastic so it's anyway a great story! Cheers

Happy early birthday! My 30’s have been my best meaningful years for sure. I’m a huge Backman fan but Anxious People was a bit of a miss for me! I can’t recall which ones of his you’ve read but A Man Called Ove and Beartown were stellar. So I suggest those to you instead of you haven’t read them yet.

I was so stoked to leave my 20's behind this year.
Honestly probably not going to read any of these books. I need me that escapism from real life issues! Probably why I steer more towards fantasy, supernatural horror, classics & pre 1800's historical fiction.

I, too, was excited to turn 30, but I’m inexplicably panicking about turning 35 next year. A couple of books that I read in the past couple of years, that I don’t think I would have been able to appreciate in my 20s: Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston, What Dreams May Come by Richard Matheson, and A Girl is a Body of Water by Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi.

Joan Didion's work is superb. There's a v good documentary about her on - I think - Netflix. (UK Netflix but I assume US as well). It's a good selection. I don't remember being too worried about my 30s. Turning 50 was a shock though because your mortality becomes much more a thing that you think about. Or I do/did anyway. I would add 'A Prayer for Owen Meany' by John Irving to that list. It had a real impact on me when I read it. It's a slow burn but I loved it. Oh, and The Sparrow is fab. Highly recommend it.

I have read / listen to Into the Wild, while the writing was good, I did not like this book, more because of Christopher McCandless' attitude.
