What was so great about this original wave was that they took inspiration from both the book and the movie, something we don't really get anymore

    • @keltondavisLEGO

And it seems, at least in this instance, that they needed to rely on the books due to a lack of information from the studio 😆

Unfortunately for many series, the moment something becomes acted (TV Series or Films), that then becomes the "real" accepted appearance. Happened with Lord of the Rings, and Game of Thrones, and likely many other places as well.

That’s why I love these yellow head figures. They are different enough to feel like Lego’s unique interpretation of copying details from the films.

I miss this era of Lego and Lego magazine. Not just because it was nostalgic for me as a kid but I always thought the stylized boxes were really cool and some of the play features were unique. One of my all-time favorite Lego magazine covers was the one shortly before the movie came out I believe it was September of 2001 and they had a recreation of the Lego Hogwarts up on a hillside at night lit up with a bunch of little lights and things I used to love that kind of miniature photography

@@keltondavisLEGO honestly I haven't done much miniature photography but it's one of the things that made me have a love of photography. I still have some old LEGO catalogs but I will say for as good as some of the late '90s and early 2000s Lego catalogs were with their photography creativity especially when it came to the holidays Playmobil always knocked it out of the park They went above and beyond

Though I myself never owned any of these (or even any minifigure-scale sets from before 2003), I do remember seeing a decent array of this early wave in the bedroom of the daughter (who was two years older than myself) of someone my mom was friends with on or around Saturday, July 10, 2004-which was several months after the Azkaban wave had been released. But I'm not completely sure as to how many sets she had, as I only remember at least the "Hogwarts Classroom" (4721), because of the chalk board panel. Even as it also came in the "Azkaban version" of Hogwarts Castle (4757) released in April 2004. But going back to the original wave covered here, many of the aesthetic of certain sets-such as the first version of Hagrid's Hut (4707) are owed to the fact that they were designed before the introduction of curved slopes, as well as the color of "earth green" (sometimes called "Metru green") by Lego as a whole. This is also most-prominently reflected in the somewhat slanted appearance of the first version of Hogwarts Express (4708), even if it isn't nearly as angular or blocky as several space themes from the early-mid 1990s-or even some of the early Star Wars sets from '99 and 2000. Regarding the color of "bright violet" on Professor Quirrell at 10:41, it first appeared in 1998 and was exclusive to the "Competition" subtheme of Technic for the first three years of its use. During 2001, it also appeared in two early Bionicle sets (1389 and 8548) before it started appearing in Harry Potter. In fact, the standard 1x2 brick in this color would've been exclusive to the original Hogwarts Castle (4709) if not for its appearances in "Bulk bricks" tubs for several years until 2004. The last regular set to feature this color was a set (4852) based on the first Spider Man film (2002) released in mid-late 2003, though there is unconfirmed evidence that the Technic 96-millimeter corrugated pipe in this color made one final appearance in 2010 in an education kit before the color was phased out entirely.

In the US and in the movie versions, the title was changed from “Philosopher’s Stone” to “Sorcerer’s Stone.”

If it makes you feel better, with inflation taken into account, these were definitely not cheap in 2001 dollars 💸

personally never liked the Harry Potter sets much, colors felt off, and the use of the cardboard cardstock felt cheap

I actually just take pictures with my DSLR and import them into AfterEffects as JPEG sequences. Haha. So nothing super fancy. I do 15 fps.
Stop motion competition sounds fun! I did a lot of brickfilming when I was a teenager, and I'll even be featuring some of those early brickfilms on my channel in the future.
