Have a farm in west-central Alberta. Still depend on my 1983 Honda 200 ATC. When I broke the recoil starter rope recently, figured I was in for an expensive [labour] repair bill and worse the bike would likely be in the local repair shop for a few weeks given that it is the busy season. Figured I would check the internet and very pleased to find your 3-part series videos and was able to make the repair and service the recoil starter myself. Works great - better than before. Your excellent quality videos with very clear instructions made it possible for someone like myself (not real mechanical), to complete the repair while saving considerable time and expense. The replacement rope cost me $5. The gasket on the inside cover plate was in poor shape. Fortunately the local Honda shop still had one of these [discontinued] parts in stock so replaced it for $28. Your videos very much appreciated. Thanks.
Man thanks so much for this, just broke my recoil cable yesterday on my 200s so I’ll be replacing soon... these videos will make that a heck of a lot easier. Cheers!
Excellent video with good information. My rebuilt from the junkyard ATC185s starts okay for me without the auto-decompressor. Adult son and teenage grandson can also start it no problem. But we are all big guys with strong hands. Others who are not big and strong cannot start it. On mine it is possible to set the decompressor lever on right side of the cylinder head to the start position manually before pulling the rope. If parts cannot be found to repair the automatic feature, and you are not strong enough to pull the rope without it, you can try this.
D-Ray, your ATC200 videos have brought my 3-wheeler back to life! Can't thank you enough. The decompressor arm on my ATC is mostly broken off and I'm not sure what would be the best fix for that - any ideas? Thanks again
Fellow Arkansan here. I just bought an ATC200. Someone has tried to rig a recoil assembly off of a 185 on it and it doesn't work. Just watching your video helped me to realize that it is missing parts, the dogs, retainer plate, and it looks like the whole decompressor assembly, if it ever even had one. What can you do to help me? I'm open to getting parts to complete it or just trading it in and buying a new assembly.
I took the decompressor system off mine more than a decade ago as a teenager and never noticed a difference 😂. There's no need to remove the gearshift lever to remove the recoil. If you just press it down you can take the recoil right off with the shifter in place. I came here to see if I could find where a specific spring goes, which came with a pawl kit I bought. I don't see that darn thing anywhere in there.
Thanks for all the videos they are great! I have a 1982 honda atc 200 and the recoil starter does not have a decompression cable going into it, I see that someone has hid the cable to the back side and on the right side of the motor where the other end of the cables located is kind of wiggling down on the motor with no tension, when i bought the 3 wheeler it started up and now it doesn't. I think someone put a different pull starter im not sure is this going to effect starting my ride?
D'Ray... Ya saved my honor Dude! Thanks! Great instruction videos' I would tell ya why but it would take forever. Ya don't happen to have one of the little rubber decompression cable retainers do ya? I'd pay top dollar!!! Thanks again. Jay
I am from Colombia, congratulations on your videos. are very instructive. I want to let me know where I can get parts for Honda ATC 200 S trimoto 1985 model. Excuse my English I appreciate your information A friend. gliserio Penagos Crespo
gliserio penagos crespo Thanks for watching, Honda doesn't have much in the way of parts for ATC's any more, your best bet is aftermarket parts or EBAY.
Thanks for the video. I recently picked up a 200s for real cheap because the recoil was broken and stuck on the bike. Got it put back together with a replacement part thanks to your help, but it's tough to start, I get that hard to pull hurts my arm thing you mentioned. It may be that I'll have to take the starter completely apart like you've done, but it's a little out of my area of expertise. Now, without having done that, I'm sure I put it on the bike just like you did in the video, but I'm curious just what the decompressor decompresses, and if you have any advice that might help.
Hello D-Ray. Thank you for your video series, they have been helpful. I have a question, can the bike start without the decompression set up? My bike has the decompression wire, but the parts that are missing are hard to find, which include the decompression pulley, spring, decompression arm, and rubber stop, etc. Can the bike still start? I am having a hard time getting it started. I do have compression, I have spark, and I do have fuel.
Hello D-Ray i need sum advice about a honda 200s. I have a 85 model honda 200s and i cant get it to fire i have put a new cdi, pulse genrator and ignition coil on it and i set the timing according to da videos on youtube with all of the parts lined up. So wat should i do now..
For me its quite odd to see a japanese engine of that cc not having a kick start on the right. Not sure im in love with using the flywheel to start the engine, but it works so im obviosly a bit ridged in thought ha ha:-) That rust looks a mess, hope you charge enough mate :-)
My first thought is where in the world can a fellow get the parts for the recoil starter compression release. I bought my ATC200S without these parts about six months ago and can not start the rig do to a bad right shoulder. I've been studying up on the starter and have been able to get a couple of the parts. If anyone reading this has a good lead on these parts try and contact me.
These are amazing videos! I am using them at a vocational school. Do you have a Patreon Account. I'd like to send you some funds for doing such a nice job

I just broke my recoil rope on my ATC 185s. This is just what I needed to do the replacement myself. Thank you!
Finally a good resolution and detailed video on this decompression/pull start topic. Thank you!
Excellent video with good information.

Good info and appreciate the video. I always bring them to my local lawnmower shop for anything pull start related and luckily very affordable.

It's really gonna help me rebuilding my 1983 ATC185s!
Pretty much all three wheelers back in the day had this type of rope starter, I have repaired countless numbers of them over the years, lol!
Thanks!
Any Idea where to buy a recoil starter . Mine just broke on my 1982 185s. Sucks because I live in Ontario Canada and unsure where to find a new one .
@@nicholascallahan5303 I have seen them on eBay but they are pretty spending...
