    My Kumquat tree is 20 yrs old and I love it. The faces people make are priceless when I pop the whole thing in my mouth and eat one. The horror! Then they try one and are sold. I grew it first in Chicago for 12 years and now at my farm in Missouri. They are GREAT small apartment "trees" (mines only 2ft x 2ft) and covered with fragrant flowers first, then the fruits.

      You're so lucky to have such a mature tree and inside your house to boot. I would love to grow a citrus tree indoors, but don't have a sunny enough exposure. 😕

    • @conniecunningham278
      @conniecunningham278 7 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      Emmy, You know, I dont think they take all that much sun. As a matter of fact I have to keep mine in the shade of a cedar on the east side of my house on a patio in summer in Missouri. Or the leaves scorch. And in Chicago I never had a hugely sunny place.
      Id give it a try if I were you. I use earth worm castings to fertilize it when I remember to. (which I usually forget)
      Do it! Buy one...

    One way to eat kumquats that negates some of the tart flavor is to gently squeeze them so that some of the oil in the rind is expressed onto the surface. I think it makes them taste even better.

    • @lindap2663
      @lindap2663 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      ashdoubleelol Do you eat the seeds or should they be discarded? Looking forward to trying them.

    • @ashdoubleelol
      @ashdoubleelol 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I just eat them. They're not very big and I don't think that they change the texture or taste very much. I would equate them to a small seed like you would find inside a grape.

    • @ilovesparky13
      @ilovesparky13 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Mine were slightly bitter after taste. Like eating pith from an orange. Are kumquat suppose to be like that? Had to add sugar to enjoy it.
      I love tart and sour and acid personally. From tart blue and black berries to apples.

    • @ashdoubleelol
      @ashdoubleelol ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dianapennepacker6854 I've had that before from kumquats that were underripe. A little bitterness from the peel is to be expected, but it shouldn't be so strong that you're unable to enjoy them without adding sugar.

    My great-grandpa Demsky had a kumquat tree when he was alive. He lived in Florida. He would give my uncle and myself a grocery bag each and we would go out in his yard and pick them. To this day I can't eat the ones in the stores because the ones straight off the tree were so much better. But if I do they remind me of him 💚😇

    Hey Emmy! You should try making kumquat jam! Just slice the kumquats skin and all into thin slices, filter out the seeds and set aside, and put all of it in a big pot, juice, pulp, skins and all and weigh how much you have, put the seeds into a cloth and tie it up and throw that inside (the seeds provide pectin which set your jam). Pour that exact amount weight of sugar into your pot in a 1 to 1 ratio and simmer it and stir! It makes a really lovely marmalade. My mum gave away sooo many of the jars that I made :)
    Tastes amazing with smoked salmon slices with some cream cheese :)

    Love your channel!!! Well here in Brazil there are a lot of unique fruit, some of them are more common in the deep country side, where there are mountains and lot of woods, so I will say some of them, probably there are no name translation because I think some of them come from some indigenous language. First of them is called "Pitanga", second one is called "Araçá" and the third one is called "Butiá", this last one is commonly used mixed with "cachaça" that is an alcoholic drink, to do a kind of liquor. Hope you like my suggestion! kisses.

    Do "winkles", Emmy. When I was a boy, my Scottish nanny (grandmother) would ALWAYS insist that I eat citrus without peeling it. Waste nothing! Its good for you!
    As a snack, she would serve kippered herring, lemon slices (with peel), dulse, and Bic's Hot Pickled Banana Peppers (back when they pickled them whole in the jar).
    Winkles (periwinkles) are basically a poor person's version of escargot. Snails in the shell that you steam, and pull out with a pin. Dip in butter if you can afford it ;)
    Edit: "Dulse" in this instance does not refer to sweetened milk or candy. It is seaweed.

    emmy, you should try loquat, they are sweet when ripe and sour when not fully ripe, they are also about the size of a kumquat but have large seeds

      Yeah, we had a couple of loquat (or biwa) trees outside our apartment in Japan. I guess I could do a taste test if I can find them here!

    Hey Emmy. I'll definitely be looking or these. When my father buys cara cara oranges he eats the entire thing as well (seeds included). I really like citrus fruit. Thanks for sharing and blessings.

    This would be great with a tea we make in Korea, but we use different fruits. I think it'll work great with this fruit also because we also use a citrus and it has a thin skin, also edible. Cut the citrus thinly, skin and seeds all, and mix with white sugar and let it be for up to a week. The sugar will draw out the moisture of the fruit and it gets syrupy. It's used to make tea, just put the syrupy mixture and its pulp in hot boiling water and the eat the skin and all, it's absolutely my favorite!

    I make a lot of smoothies. Lately I've been processing any citrus (make sure to get organic fruit) in my blender skin and all. mmmmmmmm!

    I'll have to try and find those in the UK. I love citrus fruits and I actually nibble on orange peel after I've eaten the inner segments, so they sound like I'd enjoy them :)

    Citrus fruits are so interesting! There are only three (or four) "original" citrus fruits. All others are combinations of breeding between the originals!

    When I was in second grade, we had a kumquat tree in my front yard. I remember not liking how sour they were, but as an adult, I like them so much more.

    I have a mandarinquat tree. I would think you could grow them as an summer outdoor, winter indoor plant. They are beautiful and very productive even while small.

Cant wait to check! TY Emmy. Btw-don't you do the tastings of things people send from their homes anymore?😌

    You should see if you can find kiwi berries! It's exactly like a kiwi version of what a kumquat is. I live in Maryland and the just popped up in my Giant. So worth trying if you can find them!

    A few peculiar fruits I think you should try: Kiwi berries (you can get them at sprout's) and witch's finger or sweet sapphire grapes (kind of rare and pricey, but super sweet and fun).
