    Tulpa reminds me of the imaginary characters I'd make up in my head along with an interactive world, but I grew out of them a long ass time ago. Thinking about it now is odd.
    Personally, doesn't sound too much different when you go through the process of actually making a fictional character and worlds for stories and what not. You spend a lot of time in your head "interacting" with them.

    • @Tinyflower1
      @Tinyflower1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It is exactly that. Yet they try to claim it's "similar to dissociative identity disorder" a post traumatic as well as developmental disorder caused by prolonged childhood trauma which prevents the brain from properly completing a development step to form an integrated self (before ages 6-9). It's just fu'ed up and whenever you try to correct them with all the neurological research on DID showing that it has everything to do with childhood trauma and nothing to do with fantazy proneness they get upset as if you are excluding them from "the cool kids club" yeah a disorder that can be so debilitating that it is why I'm on disability surely is cool and fun to have...I hate the internet sometimes.

      3 years late, but I believe what you experienced was Imaginery friends. That's normal.
      To me, what I read was at first facinating, a sense of recognition.... and then it went off the deep end very fast, which made me believe the person may have a DID.

    You definitely hit the nail on the head with the comparison of schizophrenia! I am a behavioral health counselor and it honestly is terrifying to our residents being unable to differentiate between hallucinations/delusions and reality, especially the young ones who are just starting to develop symptoms. Usually there are little to no distinguishable triggers for visual/auditory hallucinations except mental/emotional stress. When catatonia is involved, sometimes it can cause people diagnosed with it completely oblivious to the outside world. I've had people that I have a really great rapport with just completely ignore me and stare off into emptiness when the catatonia gets bad. It would be really interesting to temporarily experience this to get a better understanding, instead of just being able to observe.

      I get what you're saying, my brother has schizophrenia and he has visual and auditory hallucinations. His most common hallucination is seeing people decomposing and worms crawling in and out of them. Theres no trigger, it just happens sometimes.He constantly will wave his hand in front of someone's arm, like he's brushing off the worms. It's a terrifying disorder. He actually tries to avoid people because he doesn't want to scare them. I love him and it hurts me to see him go through it.

      @@manic_hearts I am so sorry that your family has experienced this, and that your brothers disorder keeps him from socialization. :-( It is so good that you support him though, in my experience family support is life changing when dealing with mental illness. (-: I wish you all the best. ♥

    just gonna say things about the whole "tulpa" issue/plurality in general, as someone with DID. i think muta did a good job remaining objective and respectful of those with mental illnesses, and i like his whole "do whatever you want" mentality! but at the same time, creating tulpas when they arent to cope with schizophrenia/similar disorders comes off to me as people using my disorder for their own gain. my 5 (that i know of) alters are unique and help and harm me in many ways, and i am friends with quite a few of them. theyre nice, and for the most part, theyre decent people. but if i couldve gone back in time and made it so i was just me, i would do it in a heartbeat. people who create these identities intentionally as a fun game or a quirky personality trait are making light of what real people with alters and other identities struggle with, and they can make multiplicity seem desirable. i have fun sometimes, but in the end: it's a mental illness. it isnt fun or quirky when i wake up and im standing in the middle of a crowded room ive never seen before at god knows what time, and i have no idea what to do. it just isnt, and acting like its a fun self improving activity is quite frankly bullshit. if people with schizophrenia want to personify what they see/hear in order to make them easier to deal with, more power to them! theyre combatting their mental illness, and i understand and dont see that as appropriation at all. but when neurotypical people- ones without dissociative or psychotic disorders- claim that they are a multiple, it pisses me off. i have an alter who literally eats bugs, rocks and leaves if left unattended. my guy frank can and will get into fights. its a constant uphill battle. why would you want that? its even worse when they invade spaces meant for people who have an actual disorder.
    tl;dr: i have the actual disorder. tulpas are making my disorder seem like a game. this upsets me and others who struggle with it.

    This is the first I have heard of "tulpas". A woman I knew who had schizophrenia used to have a "person" (she named her Tootie) whom she would blame for stealing her things when she misplaced or lost them... playing nasty tricks on her, eating her food, telling people negative things about her, etc. I worked with her as part of a homeless population. I had known several others with schizophrenia, even working for awhile in a home for the dual diagnosed (mental illness and other coexistent disorders); but this was the only one I had ever known who had this sort of manifestation.

    Heads up: The tulpa thing is pretty similar to what I have. I don’t have a tulpa, but I do have dissociative identity disorder (used to be multiple personality disorder). I’ve always felt like I’ve been sharing my body with other people. I have 6 alters, and people dismiss it off as “the disorder isn’t real” but it definitely isn’t fake.

    • @Tinyflower1
      @Tinyflower1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      It's not similar in anyway, I'm diagnosed with DID as well. DID can only form from prolonged childhood trauma before the ages 6-9. Making up an imaginary friend when you are older isn't in anyway shape or form the same as brain development being altered by chronic trauma before the brain can form an integrated self.

    I know it has been like 3 years but I just wanted to say something interesting about the concept of tulpas.
    I talked about this with a friend who likely has a mental illness and undoubtedly has these "Tulpas".
    He said he currently has only 5. 2 male, 2 female, and one is inhuman. He describes them as all being weird embodiments of various traits and desires and cannot really control them. They all occur to him in thought and have interactions every single day, serious or minor.
    It was really difficult to make out if he was serious or not at first until he once had a little too much to drink and legit broke down in tears over one of them.
    This piqued my interest in looking further into tulpas and psychology.
    I JUST DEDUCED IT IS POSSIBLY DAEMONISM! He said 4 of them can take on alternative forms of themselves more accurately reflecting what they embody! Thank you Muta for helping pique my interest.

    Yeah I deal with auditory and visual hallucinations. Unfortunately getting away from the hallucinations is absolutely terrible. I always felt like the hallucinations were going to harm me. And everyone told me they can’t but I truly felt like they were controlling me sometimes. It feels like you can’t escape because when ever you hallucinate in your vision you try to catch it over and over again, yet you know it’s not there. I’ve gotten so called comfortable with hallucinating because I can’t get tested sooner. I’ve settled and managed to cope with anxiety and hallucinations. But it is seriously some fucked up shit! I’m being tested in November for psychiatric evaluation and I hope in my future to help people going through the same shit. My whole high school life is going to be based off of mental illnesses because I currently have many illnesses I’m still being treated for.

    i was diagnosed with DID when i was 23, and the whole tulpa thing really annoys me. it makes those of us with a legitimate psychiatric disorder sound like tumblr snowflakes. 😡

    • @thedarkdragon1437
      @thedarkdragon1437 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe the person in question is trying to cope with undiagnosed early representation of DID and thus mixing it up with something most people have experienced at one point in their life: imagniery friends, or something far more intriguing: ability to create personalities as coping mechanism.
      I wrote about it few minutes ago, but sadly i was 3 years too late. Sorry about that, but I do hope, if you read this, you can find my comment and hopefully some insight to bloggers background thinking

    Muta, those Christians were right about the truly powerful influence of video games on one's psyche and it's translation into real life. I played NBA 2k19 on my PS4 for a month straight, devoting up to 5 hrs every day, and now I never miss a single shot (even from the full court line!) when I'm on the court. This shit is no joke. REPENT NOW!!11!!1

    I will say one thing, this is one of the reasons people don't openly tell others about tulpas. To a lot of people it's hard to understand. It's not exactly an imaginary friend, they can act on their own.

  • @RadiantSkiddMarx

    When people get that lonely and depressed, like the Tulpa thing, it might make sense if the subconscious can create a voice or someone in their head as a self preservation instinct, for fear of suicide or death from loneliness. Like when an old married couple dies within days of each other, or animals who die from heartbreak if their baby is killed. Maybe different parts of the brain have different levels of consciousness to them, and realize that if the main control gives up or decides to end it, the rest of the body dies. Like someone who's dangerously suicidal, if they break down while they're driving a car, talk and calm them down, or they might crash and kill everyone. Even if it means lying to them, or convincing them of things that aren't real or true.
