Several japanese martial arts, including karate and kendo were brought and practiced there, and koreans copied that and made tae kwon do and "haidong gumdo" made-up stuff.
Mostly in the edo period the movies just lie. You just have to directly go straight for the neck battles in real samurai history last only a few minutes it had to be fast in that period it lasted till 5-10 minutes fast.
Also a loud kiai or shout can intimidate or confuse your opponent, if you are a novice it will make you hesite if your rival has a superior determination (to kill you or hurt you).
