In Asia, tan people are perceived as "poor" because poor farmers spend a lot of time in the sun, so they get darker, because of that dark skin is associated with being poor. In the US, people want some "spice" to their skin, and they don't have the situation they have in Asia, so they prefer tanned skin.

There’s always been colorist undertones in Chinese society. In the past, Pale skinned girls were seen as rich as prettier because that meant they went out into the sun less meaning they were privileged. Tanned girls however were seen as poorer because they get “burnt” from working on farms or manual labour. It’s honestly so upsetting that it still stayed in our culture. Asia is generally still quite traditional and I hope our views on skin tone changes soon because I myself am I tanned asian and my Chinese relatives always tell me to get “paler” or “whiter” it’s horrible ://///

I had a Korean roommate who told me that many women in Korean get plastic surgery to look more European. I literally would have never known about eye surgery if it wasn’t for her. That’s not natural beauty and Koreans are apart of the Asian culture, correct? I think these women did the same thing that many women do of many races.
