I normally wouldn't like spoilers but for this book I liked it because I think it was unique. Also it goes along with who Death is. He is omniscient and I think it makes sense. I love this book though. It's my favorite.
Such an amazing book. Glad ya'll finally read it! I once read an interview with the author about the relationship between Max and Liesel. He said that in his own mind they never got together, but because the book leaves it kind of open-ended the readers can kind of fill in the blanks as they choose. Are you planning to read I am the Messenger as well?
Are they considered spoilers if it's presented in the beginning of the book? Does it not just mean that this story is not about it's ending, but it's journey to there? Also: I think the purpose of Death revealing their deaths was to both show his being desensitized to death, but also, like previously stated, it isn't the death of the characters that matters, but their lives. He isn't haunted by the death of humans; he's haunted by the living.
This is my favorite book of all time. When I finished this book, it was the first time for me that I actually held it to my chest crying my eyes out not wanting it to end. I've reread it like 3 times since then.
You all might really like "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas." The movie adaptation was lovely as well. It's about a little boy whose father is a Nazi officer, and the backyard of his new home is adjacent to an internment camp. He's ignorant to why a little boy his age is kept behind the fence with all of the other Jewish people and what the camp means, but he and the boy become friends anyway. It's beautiful!
+Kayla Cummings Right? The year it was nominated for an Oscar, my history teacher made it extra credit to compare/contrast the book and movie. I ripped my heart out for that assignment lol!
Wolf by Wolf by Ryan Graudin is an incredible alternative history set during and after WW2. It was an amazing read with such an interesting timeline and prose. I would highly recommend reading it, especially after reading the Book Thief, which is one of my all time favorites.
Some of the recent historic fiction books that I have read about WWII are All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr, Atonement by Ian McEwan, and Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden. The first two are set in Europe during WWII, and Memoirs of a Geisha gives the perspective of the Japanese during WWII. They are all more of the adult genre rather than young adult though. I definitely recommend them!
Has anyone read the last two books in Elie Wiesel's Night trilogy? My favorite part of the book was when Liesel decided to read aloud to the townspeople in the basement while a bombing was taking place. I think a lot of people forget that part.
One of my favorite books! I first read the book and then I listened to it. When I listened to the book, it took on a whole new meaning to me. I really think this is one of those books which is meant to me told/read to you. If you get a chance, I think you'll love each the book even more.
Actually in the movie Liesel does have an edginess but it's more visible after the half of the story when she becomes more comfortable with her new home and all. Like you can see the excitement that thievery brings her ( when she steals from the mayor's house ) and it's amusing cause you see how after everything she's been through ( being separated from her mom and losing her brother ) she can still act as a child who enjoys breaking the rules and who is quite sassy too. I think the movie is really really good...You really see what these people went through and you feel their despair and the injustice of it all.
All the light we cannot see is beautiful and the night circus is historical even though it's also magical and so incredible. Also, is Michael Morpurgo just a British thing because we all grew up on his books (most of which were historical.)
The Book Thief is by far one of my favorites! The Boy on the Wooden Box is a great true story about a boy on Schindler's List. Short, sweet, sad and inspirational!
I think that the spoilers fit pretty well with Death's character, because he is so up front and straight forward, he doesn't bother with keeping the details until the end. I quite enjoyed the spoilers, because it built up the suspense for me and kept me intrigued, and it helped build the tone and mood of the book for me.
The Bronze Horseman, The Boy in the Stripped Pajamas, All the Light We Cannot See, Between Shades of Grey, Atonement, Suite Francaise, Testament of Youth, All Quiet on the Western Front, Code Name Verity - many of them are also movies :) and I highly recommend The Bronze Horseman!
Watching this video brought back the whole book for me. I remembered the brothers death on the train and when the door spitters son hung himself. An amazing and emotional book.
I've read The Railway Man and Unbroken as world war books other than The Book Thief and they were great! I was expecting someone to mention one of those
I loved The Storyteller by Jodi Picoult. It has two povs. One is from a woman in our present time who is from a family of Jews and is trying to apprehend a ex-Nazi soldier. The other is from her grandmother in her teens living through WWII in concentration camps. It was an amazing and heartbreaking story. Between the Lines and Off the Page were the only books I read from her, but the writing style in The Storyteller is COMPLETELY different.
I was probably a bit too excited when I saw this in my subscription box because I read The Book Thief a year ago for school and to this day it is still my favourite book of all time.
Liesel and Max were tied for my favorite and then Papa was my second favorite. Any scene towards the end with Max I got teary and I love Max, he is definitely one of my favorite characters along with Liesel. ❤️ I actually started saying some of the German words like Saukerl and Saumensch now lol.
Nooo!!! I'm so mad, I stayed up for so long for this, waiting and waiting and waiting, and totally excited, because I love to see you all live! Yet ONE HOUR, only ONE HOUR I was away from this awesome channel, after having waited in several hours, and I go back, and the live show has JUST finished. Agh. So annoying :c Have to wait a month for the next D:
As for WWII historical fiction I really loved The Boy in the Striped Pajamas and then The Storyteller by Jodi Picoult. Also E. M Remarque's works are excellent if you like classics with this topic :)
Just to try and clarify, I studied The Book Thief for literature in yr 12 and we agreed that Death spoils character deaths as a way to manipulate the readers into becoming that much more attached to the characters - kind of like appreciating the them while they last, enjoying what little time we have with them, which is kind of how Death looked at the people he grew attached to as well. Also Frau and Hans are not characters, they just mean Mr and Mrs in a way, like Hans Huberman's a character but Hans is not an actual name, more of a title for German's.
Hi, totally agree with you on the death spoiling things part, however Hans is actually a german name for a man, whereas Frau, as you said, means Mrs. Mr would mean Herr though and Hans is just his first name :)
I'm having some trouble so I was on amazon and I found this awesome sounding YA book and when I tried to download it it said it wasn't working but would put it in my library when it could but it didn't! I wandered if anyone knows the name it's about a girl and basically she lives on this big island place in the sky and her mum years ago jumped off meaning wherever she goes whispers follow as jumping off the edge is a big scandal and she feels that maybe she's drawn to doing the same thing and wants to know why her mum left her and it's a trilogy any ideas?
+Rita Azevedo , It makes more sense if you do read the TMI series before reading Lady Midnight because you get introduced to the characters in the sixth book of the TMI
please please read and do a review on the new twilight book -life after death, I finished reading it a while ago and I'd love to know what you thought :))
I LOVE that all of you liked this. And yes ABOUT TIME you read this. I've been commenting on every one of your channels at one point, that you needed to read it :P
You may say that german people swear a lot in general, especially in english. It's just really normal for us, so when I read the book it didn't even disturb me for a second. It was just normal. Though we don't say things like "Saumensch".😅
i just wanted to pop in here to re-watch our intro. hahaha.
+jessethereader SAMES XD
Leave
I don't know how anyone can finish this book without bawling their eyes out.
I read this and I started the last few chapters at like 11pm and at 3am I was hysterically sobbing my eyes out.
But it was sooooo good
WHEN YOUR FAVORITE BOOKTUBERS READ YOUR FAVORITE BOOK THIS IS SO SURREAL
+Emma Robison I KNOW I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THEM TO READ THIS SINCE I READ IT
I WAS SO HAPPY WHEN I SAW THAT SHE READ IT
+Emma Robison I KNOW RIGHT?!?!? OMG AJDFLJDLKSFJ
If you liked the Book Thief, read All the Light We Cannot See by Another Doerr! It's also a beautifully written World War II book and it's amazing.
i love both but the book thief is the best novel ever written in my opinion
Rudy's death really got me
I normally wouldn't like spoilers but for this book I liked it because I think it was unique. Also it goes along with who Death is. He is omniscient and I think it makes sense. I love this book though. It's my favorite.
I like the part where Rudy saves her book from the lake
Such an amazing book. Glad ya'll finally read it! I once read an interview with the author about the relationship between Max and Liesel. This is my favourite standalone of all time. I loved this. It killed me. It destroyed my so deeply.
This is my favorite book of all time. When I finished this book, it was the first time for me that I actually held it to my chest crying my eyes out not wanting it to end. I've reread it like 3 times since then.

I watched the movie in english class in 8th grade, and i swear the whole class cried at the end
+Kayla Cummings I watched it with my parents and sister and I was sobbing, but they were all just sitting there with blank expressions
+Kayla Cummings Right? The year it was nominated for an Oscar, my history teacher made it extra credit to compare/contrast the book and movie. I ripped my heart out for that assignment lol!
holy shit, yes. we watched that in philosophy class and there were several people crying by the end
+AtomicBlonde I loved that book and the movie actually did justice for it
THEY CHANGED LIESEL'S BROWN EYES TO BLUE IN THE MOVIE AND IM SO PISSED (I havent watched it but i have watched the trailer)
Wolf by Wolf by Ryan Graudin is an incredible alternative history set during and after WW2. It was an amazing read with such an interesting timeline and prose. I would highly recommend reading it, especially after reading the Book Thief, which is one of my all time favorites.

Now I want to re-read it. Amazing book. Love that you loved it.

If you're looking for more WW2 novels "Codename Verity" and "The story about Leon, Schindler's youngest worker" are two of my faves
Codename Verity is sooo good!
Actually in the movie Liesel does have an edginess but it's more visible after the half of the story when she becomes more comfortable with her new home and all. I actually read a book BEFORE Christine! My life is complete.
This starts at like one o'clock in the morning for me so I'll probs watch it all tomorrow cause The Book Thief is one my favourite books of all time
I've read The Railway Man and Unbroken as world war books other than The Book Thief and they were great! I was expecting someone to mention one of those

Christine: I would recommend you read the other book by markus Zusak, "I AM THE MESSENGER" it is a contemporary, and very good!

"Night" was really a beautiful story.

I have a question please answer! Do u need to read the mortal instruments or the clockwork books(forgot the series name) to read lady midnight?
Yes, Christine recommends reading the books in publication order or TMI will spoil TID eventually if you read them in series order.
THIS IS MY FAVORITE BOOK OF ALL TIME. Yes, I know those words are strong, but it is true.
The only other books taking place during WW2 I can think of that I've read would be the Narnia series, and those I read ages ago.
when is the next liveshow for lady midnight?
Has jesse finished TMI ? I didn't see him post the CoHF review...
Would you guys ever collab with the Perustopia book club? 'Cause Lady Midnight is their book in March, too!

Kristine! Can you do a booksplosion of the Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card? It's really great
Wolf by Wolf is really cool fantasy book that takes place in WW2 :)
jesse's laugh though
Code name verity by Elizabeth Wein is a really great WW2 historical fiction.
For a film they did it really well. I was scared they'd hollywoodise it or something, but it was cute.
YESSSSSS MY FAVOURITE BOOK FINALLY
Do you have to have read the TMI series to read Lady Midnight? Or is it and independent series like TID?
+Rita Azevedo , It makes more sense if you do read the TMI series before reading Lady Midnight because you get introduced to the characters in the sixth book of the TMI
Ok, thanks :)
CHRISTINE ARE YOU GOING TO READ THE CROWN BY KIERA CASS
please please read and do a review on the new twilight book -life after death, I finished reading it a while ago and I'd love to know what you thought :))
