I’ve been collecting since the 90s. I most definitely look at it as a bad thing. I miss the days when you can find movies everywhere. Those day were most definitely perfect to me. I purchased Children of the Corn Part II and a Puppet Master collection at a drug store. A drug store man! How awesome is that! I needed more multivitamins and I found a DVD rack. I miss FYE and Sam Goodie. I miss Hollywood Video. I miss the video store in all of the malls. I miss Best Buy being a store that mattered. I miss being absolutely bombarded with physical media wherever you went. Those were the glory days.
Special features were definitely a thing during the DVD era. Every movie had loads of them and some multiple discs full of them.
I became a rabid fan of the Universal Classic Monsters because of physical media. In 2004, when Van Helsing was coming out, Universal released the Monster Legacy DVD Gift Set, which included the legacy collections of Dracula, Frankenstein, and The Wolf Man, and a hand painted resin bust by Sideshow Collectibles for each monster. The big box it came in was beautiful, awesome, classy! I’ll never forget, it was the Sunday BEFORE official release date, Blockbuster had it on their shelf behind the cash register. I asked them, “are you guys selling that yet?” They said, “yes.” If you can imagine me running home with my awesome collectible Universal Monster box set with 3 busts and 14 films on 6 discs with a smile on my face that would make The Joker look like he is crying, that was me. Prior to that, I saw a few of the classic monster movies, but that box set, on that faithful Sunday, made me the fan that I am today.
    Memories man. Memories.

Have to give a shout out to Anchor Bay. Their Halloween DVD releases in the 90's early 2000's were amazing. Anchor Bay was for me where it all started. Loads of special features, booklets, etc Anchor Bay used to be really special.

Special features were what got me into buying a DVD player in the first place. In 2000, I still had the 20 inch 80s TV that I bought from a neighbor for 50 bucks, so picture quality wasn’t that noticeable. But the idea of deleted scenes, director’s commentary, etc. were too good to pass up. I still contend the 2-disc DVD of Fight Club and the 5-disc Godfather collection were game changers in accelerating DVD taking over as the dominant format.

That shout factory Halloween 3 Blu-ray was a game changer for its time. The deluxe packaging, the new slipcase art and the loads of special features. Shout factory really set the bar for special features for horror films. Now all that is taken for granted. But in 2012 it was groundbreaking.

I think it's totally getting out of control with all the premium releases. Here in Germany we've got 7(!) Terrifier 2 Mediabook variants with different covers - all limited.
For me personally it's about the movies, not the packaging. That's why I sold all my Mediabooks, Steelbooks etc. and just collect Blu Ray Amarays from now on. Love the packaging uniformity, gives me strong video store vibes 📼

I think as long as physical media companies have a "Standard" variant to a big box release I'll be alright. It's hard not to get FOMO looking at limited edition box sets or what-have-you, especially when they have beautiful custom art and sturdy, premium casing but nowadays I feel like I wanna economize. If you have limited space for your movies (like myself) there isn't much room for chunky boxes. Sometimes it's just nice to have a clean, standard release of something that's more economical from a shelf space standpoint and a wallet one.

The high prices have definitely become a reason to wait for the sales from the boutique labels. I remember when $20 was considered a lot for an LE. That was around 2001 when I would go to K-Mart and always find the latest Anchor Bay dvds there. I got The Stunt Man limited edition because it was numbered. I'd never seen anything like that before. Felt like it was worth the "premium" price of $20 at that point. Now that feels like a sale price when some titles are debuting at $60 like Opera.

If scream factory still did their current releases like they did halloween 3 with the new art already included & loaded special features I wouldn't be crapping on them like I am now for minimal to no special features & for making people pay a extra 15$ for a new commission art slip. I would honestly be very happy if scream tried with their releases now like they did with Halloween 3. I really miss those golden era scream factory days of a good quality boutique product & wish we still had it because they don't feel like that anymore. If I don't own it & it looks nice or if it's a worthy upgrade I may buy it despite the price. I just brought opera because I don't own it & I really like it on top of it looks like it's gonna be loaded. I also blind brought the last horror show with a slipcase because of it's supposed limited window release & because of people talking about it last year convicted me to buy it while I still can. I'm probably gonna blind buy that release of trick or treat when it gets release because of how many times this movie gets hyped up & because I haven't seen it. I just don't know if I'm get cover A,B or c yet.

Scream still does do great releases with lots of new special features, but the negative narrative has gotten so out of hand that many people seem to miss them. I just pre-ordered titles from their September slate for example, and The Boy and Doomsday are absolutely loaded, with Village of the Damned also seeming great. I know it's not always the case, but Shout is still a overall great company.

Big fan of uniformity. I don’t buy steel books (cases scratch or dent way too easy) or movies in boxes. Not even a fan of “box sets”. Scream factory releasing the Chucky movies on 4K individually was my favorite thing.
Unpopular opinion: but I don’t even care for slip covers. Used to throw them away. Now I keep them, but not on the bluray case.
So yeah, I’d greatly agree with your general take on this. More uniformity, more simplicity, and less boxes and over the top releases, with some small exceptions.

Recent convert from digital only here. I really only want to purchase simple regular case releases with no slip cover. I don't really want to worry about slip cover. I do care about the high quality features on the discs from boutique labels. I wish a standard case edition was released along with all these premium cases and boxes. That said, I put all these movies on my NAS and keep the physical media basically as receipts of ownership.

I agree with your opinion on the pecking order. I love the movie Opera. I own the Blue Underground DVD, which I am still happy with. That new Opera release is beautiful; however, there is a line with how much I’m willing to spend on ONE movie. Also, it depends on the movie too. I was willing to pre-order the 4K of Friday the 13th (2009) directly from Arrow the minute I saw it online. But that is the Friday the 13th franchise. Opera is awesome. It is. But it is not at the level of Friday the 13th in my eyes. I’m just being honest here.

I think we are living in a truly amazing time, to be a collector and fan of film. I'm somewhere in the middle, slightly leaning into the "more is more" . I'm collecting within my budget, but still enjoying/indulging where I can. Just the ability to have the best copy of a film, all the cool bonus materials about the making of the film, the creators, trailers, even alternate cuts of films, and in different formats (dvd, blu ray and 4K.) Cleaner audio and video, and lots of historically important films, while also lots of lesser known films, and film and tv that might be minor and aren't as well known now....... we are really looking at an amazing time to collect. Is there a chance that things are out of control . Possibly. Hard slip cases, book quality booklets in the package.... do we need all of these, and is it possible that , the sales will fall off because of this ? or will the specialty labels having multiple options be a good thing, so the different types of fans can get just what they want ? or will we all burn out faster than we realize ? For now, I buy super deluxe packages where I want to / favorite things..... mid tier options for others, and basic editions for a lot.
I got the Severin Argento / 4 Flies on Grey Velvet special edition nearly 2 years ago....... I remember many videos had fans really upset, and complain..... but to be fair.... the package was so good, the pricing was actually pretty legit. I'm more accepting of the specialty labels . that was a 4 disc set, 4k / blu ray, 2 cuts of the film in multiple formats, tons of bonus features, featurettes, interviews (including a new interview with Dario Argento )..... and a cd of the movie soundtrack. I studied graphic design..... it does cost a bit for the different graphics, inks, and spot varnish that was used to accentuate parts of the slip cover. I think it was originally $55 before tax...... so $13.75 per disc...... that's not really bad. At all. For a 4k ???? are you kidding me ? and 3 blu rays ? And it came out during one of the sales...... I realize not everyone might have bought other sales items, but if you planned out your purchase..... you could do really well for yourself (I got 3 other films, 2 were double disc editions, all still had slip covers, with tons of bonus features...... on a per basis, I think it became only $8 or $9 per disc, when all was said and done, based on all that I purchased.) Some of this comes down to the consumer looking for good deals, buying within in their means, but also finding ways to support the labels directly and indirectly..... so the specialty labels especially know we like their work.
there is a way to both support the business / hobby AND have both really nice items, and not blow the bank. it takes a little careful planning, and viewing things properly. I tend to think we should still have a relatively healthy home video business as time goes on...... the current scene is truly unique and in a good place in terms of what the companies are putting out.

Great video, man. I agree with a lot of what you’re saying. First and foremost, yes, if you aren’t a huge, gigantic, massive fan of a certain film, don’t spend more than you think you should for it. Everything get’s re-released at some point, everything goes on sale, etc. Also, I think despite some obvious similarities, all of these labels have their own identities. I think Kino is allowed to budget their releases is because the breadth of their catalog is massive and not relegated to horror/exploitation. You see Arrow, Shout Factory and even VS doing the same. Severin kind of stays in that lane when it comes their catalog, which for my personal tastes is the best in the business. I think that their operation is likely a little smaller than some of the others, so to acquire Opera, which was likely very expensive, especially for them, they kind of have to put out a deluxe edition to justify the cost of acquiring it. Doing so also allows them to be competitive with other labels that may have more resources. Hell, from what I understand, that Dawn of the Dead could have bankrupted Second Sight if it didn’t do well. So, I think the cost of acquiring some of these films has to be taken into account when we’re taking about this stuff. Also, Severin almost always releases standard, cheaper editions of their films that can go as low as $15 on sale. You aren’t even getting slipless VS films that cheap on sale. Bottom line, still like you said, don’t overpay unless it’s something you truly love.

I started over buying DVDs in 2007, Hastings here, the pawn shops, fkn Walmart. By the time I had hundreds I decided to look in the blu ray section at Hastings one Day. There were so many great movies they didn't have on DVD. And believe Me, I was in there EVERY Day combing, looking for anything cool that was possibly worked in. So The Town that Dreaded Sundown and I think Eaten Alive, Dracula Prince of Darkness, they started it all. Now I'm in the middle of moving, all but a dozen movies packed up. Out of My element ⚰️🧛. Plus the made for TV movies, stuff like Dark Night of the Scarecrow, Burnt Offerings, The Night Stalker movies when they aired. At that time We only had 3 channels. It was because of My Father that I seen these and original Universal etc. I constantly had the Monster books checked out at the libraries, always have loved it and of course great films that aren't Horror. There's nobody to talk about any of it except Our bass player and He's away til next month. We've made Music on and off since 1988, My point being I'm more inspired by the Music from ALOT of movies. The Dark Shadows series even, had awesome Music, repetitive of course. I'm stuck in the past with films with the exceptions now. Only in the past with Punk Rock. Was born in 72 and for a while I've begun to realize why older generations are so grumpy.

Physical media hasn't changed all that much, really. Formats have come and gone and levels of studio involvement has fluctuated over the years but it's still pretty much the same at its core. You're a young dude so you don't have the benefit of hindsight - Laserdisc started it all way back in the early 80's. What HAS changed is people's interest in collecting. When DVD was at it's peak, everybody and their mothers were buying movies by the armloads. You could buy DVDs at gas stations and supermarkets back then, so it was convenient. Now the studios are pushing streaming and the masses are now convinced that discs are evil. A lot of folks have bought into it. Hopefully the young generation (meaning you) continue to support physical media and don't buy into the convenience factor.
