  • Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984)
    Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom is a 1984 American action-adventure film directed by Steven Spielberg from a script by Willard Huyck and Gloria Katz, based on a story by George Lucas. It is the second installment in the Indiana Jones film series, and a prequel to Raiders of the Lost Ark. The film features Harrison Ford who reprises his role as the title character. Kate Capshaw, Amrish Puri, Roshan Seth, Philip Stone and Ke Huy Quan, in his film debut, star in supporting roles. In the film, after arriving in British India, Indiana Jones is asked by desperate villagers to find a mystical stone and rescue their children from a Thuggee cult practicing child slavery, black magic, and ritual human sacrifice in honor of the goddess Kali.
    We thought it would be fun for Coby to watch Indiana Jones in chronological order, which is basically just reversing Temple of Doom with Raiders of the Lost Ark but ultimately the films were made so close together it's hard to tell the difference in Harrison Ford's age. We can imagine Short Round is in boarding school getting an education so he can show up later in the Short Round Disney+ series.

    There is a call-back joke in Temple of Doom that doesn't really land without seeing Raiders of the Lost Ark first, but it's still a fine place to start the franchise. It's my favorite film in the franchise.

    I was at the World Science Convention when Frank Marshall (the producer) announced they were making a 3rd Indiana Jones movie. Someone in the audience asked if he'd have to sit through the movie with another whining woman, to which Marshall replied, "It depends who you go with."

    THANK YOU! Thank you for loving Willie as much as I do. She's comedic relief. She's a fish out of water... and you got that! Most people hate the screaming. I love it as it's her character's honest reaction to being forced on an Indiana Jones adventure, and I love Indy's reaction to it. Willie's a lounge singer, not Lara Croft.

    The mine cart chase was originally slated for Raiders of the Lost Ark, but it was scrapped for a myriad of reasons. When Spielberg needed a climax for Temple of Doom, he had the time & resources to utilize it.
    A lot of Indy enthusiasts put ToD near the bottom of the pack, but I absolutely LOVE it for its opening, the uniqueness of the tone, and the finale when the children are reunited with their parents in the village. That final scene is almost always tear-inducing for me :-)

    This movie is my favorite prequel, great way to get them out of the typical form. They filmed in Sri Lanka, because India did not accept hosting a film depicting their culture eating snakes, bugs, ect.. Also they actually dropped that massive bridge in Sri Lanka, and another smaller set in London. Filmography is kick ass.

    9:32 The filmmakers were denied permission to film in North India and Amer Fort, due to the government finding the script offensive. As a result, location work went to Kandy, Sri Lanka, with matte paintings and scale models applied for the village, temple, and Pankot Palace.

    Great reaction ! Loved it that you starts with temple of doom (it's still my ultimate favorite adventure movie of all time), it's another experience that only few reactors on youtube have done. The only issue is that you could find is the others are not as action-packed, stressful and dark as this one (wich is still considered to be the most intense of them all). And perhaps also it will be your favorite (it's my personal favorite by the way) and the others couldn't top it but maybe not.
    Because the 3 indy movies are all great in their own way, it's crazy, they have each their own style.
    And the most crazy thing is when you ask people and fans of indy, they can have each of them as their favorite like a 33% for raiders, 33% for temple, etc ... Something really rare with the fandom of a movie franchise. When everybody is always talking about perfect trilogy, they're always talk about the lord of the rings, star wars, back to the future, die hard but I "protest" to say indiana jones is one of them (the first 3 movies are all amazing).
    Since you seem to be familiar with star wars, you must know that Georges Lucas wanted for the sequel to the first indy : the same treatment he did with empire strikes back meaning a darker movie than the first one with higher stakes.
    You can see the pattern here :
    -a new hope (1977) - raiders of the lost ark are the first fun adventure into this universe
    -empires strikes back (1980) - temple of doom (1984) have higher stakes with darker elements
    -return of the jedi (1983) - last crusade (1989) are less darker than the previous one for an epic conclusion.
    And for both trilogy, my least to most favorite goes with the same order meaning it goes like this :
    -return of the jedi and last crusade (8/10)
    -a new hope and raiders of the lost ark (9/10)
    -empire strikes back and temple of doom (10/10)
    There is also a little fun fan theory where you can imagine that the whole indiana jones life is actually a fever dream that Han Solo has when he was frozen into the carbonite :)
    And it doesn't really matter which indy you watch first since they're all stand-alones movies with differents sidekicks and plots just like james bond. Which is funny that you mentioned since for the anectode : Spielberg wanted to direct a james bond movie but he couldn't (producers issues I guess) so he decided to create his own james bond but way better ;)
    More iconic, more handsome, more badass, better films and became even more memorable than him througout the years with only 3 movies. It's like james bond but if he was an treasure hunter.
    And actually, it's a really good thing that you started with temple of doom especially for indy's character developments : Maybe you didn't notice but at the starts of the movie he only steals artifacts for "fortune and glory" and deliberatly threathened a girl in hostage just for his own interests and being a novice by drinking the poison. (that's also why audiences was kind of confused when they saw temple of doom, they didn't know it was a prequel, so it was weird to see an naif/inexperienced indy drinking a random drink).
    And furthermore, at first (maybe you didnt' catch that but) he didn't go save the slave children at pankot or retrieve the rocks to brem them back, he just wanted them for himself, his own "fortune and glory" but when he heard the children's scream and then the whole followed adventure you witnessed ... Changed him a bit, grown him.
    That's an important detail to remember for the following entries (especially the third one "last crusade" ^^). The only detail that could bug you in raiders is indy doesn't believe in magic (even after that whole supernatural adventure I witnessed) so it's better to assume that he was probably amnesics at some point (the only explanation XD)
    Also, you souldn't be nervous about the old effects, I mean come on, it's spielberg and georges lucas together (they can litterally create magic). And like the first trilogy of star wars, some effects still hold up very well even after 40 years and unfortunetly some a little less :(
    So sorry for my bad english and for this too long comment XD
    I'm really looking forward the next indy movies reaction. Do you think you could upload once a week maybe ? :)

    • @user-et6pj4db9s
      @user-et6pj4db9s 25 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      They're not interchangeable at all, they're very much two different films that's why the imagery was lost on her cos she started with this first and thought she was watching a Bond film, then when she watched Raiders she'd already seen the character so the opening of that had less impact. Watching things chronologically doesn't necessarily work. Lucas only set this a year earlier cos he wanted to avoid Indiana running into the ascension of Hitler in the late 30s but he made a huge mistake doing so cos as Coby later sees Indy goes from having a massive supernatural experience in this film to then dismissing the ark as superstitious nonsense in the other film which makes no sense. So watching them chronologically doesn't work at all.

    • @user-et6pj4db9s
      @user-et6pj4db9s 25 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@Hoeech you lose alot more than just specific film references, the first scene of the first film is designed to introduce you to the image of Indiana with the hat and whip, it doesn't work if you start with this one cos this one is introducing Indy as a James Bond style character which just confused Coby so no you can't just start with this one it doesn't work.

Up until their arrival at the Pankot Palace, the outfit she's been wearing has been borrowed: the white coat, dark pants, and shirt that Indy wore to the club.

    How WONDERFUL to actually, finally see someone watch Temple of Doom, without it being bloody compared to Raiders at every turn. So refreshing! Temple is it's own thing,has it's own vibe and yes, you will see that the female leads are very different in each film - especially Marion from Raiders who is constantly pitted against Willie...unfairly so! • @WastedPo
    @WastedPo ปีที่แล้ว +4

    It's interesting you're watching these in chronological order. I will say that in doing so you'll miss a couple things: (a) The opening musical number is really a subversion of expectations, after already establishing in "Raiders" that Indy is a character that's known for gritty adventure. (b) The part towards the end of "Doom" when Indy goes to grab his gun and it's not there is a callback to a popular scene in "Raiders."
    You're right that it is odd that Short Round isn't with Indy later on. (Of course "Raiders" which came out before Doom, confusingly takes place a year after "Doom.") Considering they were basically father and son, and Short Round was one of the most well-liked element of "Doom," we can only hope that he's at least alive and doing well, and that Indy maintained the relationship, even if he wasn't raising him anymore.
    Kate Capshaw actually had a pretty good career going in the 80s ("Space Camp," "Dreamscape"), but I'm convinced that starring in Doom derailed her trajectory. I think she got a negative response from playing such a histrionic character. (If you watch her other movies, you realize that this wasn't the norm for her.) Plus, when you eventually get married to the most successful director in Hollywood and then go on to raise a huge family, then obviously your acting career is going to take a backseat.

    When he screamed and ran, it’s a reference to, Star Wars A New Hope, when he ran into the storm troopers. When you mentioned the cavalry, and where did they come from, there are some deleted scenes from this movie, which would explain why they showed up, and another including why short round used fire to snap Indy out of the spell. I can’t imagine why they were taken out, because it fills in the gaps of the story that are unanswered.

    Coby, I loved that you loved the movie, it was easy to tell because you were literally on the edge of your seat half the time!😆I've just enjoyed this movie more and more over the years. It was a little controversial at the time because of the intensity, Spielberg even said there were a few scenes that were too intense for kids. I will say I'm just not a fan of watching things in chronological order vs. release order. For instance, you missed the gag at the campfire about the snake, which I'm sure you got when you watched "Raiders". Also, you missed seeing Indy for the first time in his introductory scene where he steps out of the shadows like the rest of us did. But I'm really looking forward to seeing your "Raiders" reaction and how you react to it after seeing this one first.
    Btw, the kids were looking for the missing stones, but also were mining for precious gems to fund the Thuggi cause.( FYI the Thuggis were a real and murderous cult in India in the 1800s that the British eventually put down by force.) And I'd say the authorities were alerted when the kids were freed and ran out of the palace The British commander was already on-site or nearby from making his inspection of the palace.
    (And, a side note, I had guessed 24, 25 tops,. Maybe a young looking 30 based on a reference. Never '84! 🤩)

      Over the years I’ve introduced people to Indy via Raiders and Doom sometimes doing Raiders first and sometimes doing Doom first and I’ve always found people enjoy Doom way more if they watch it first and Raiders and Crusade work better back to back because they share similar themes. That’s the main reason I had Coby watch in this order. Lots of time growing up in the 80s people who missed Raiders in theaters would often catch Doom as their introduction to the series - happened to my friend who it took him years to see Raiders after first watching Doom on HBO. I think he rented it from blockbuster in 87 or 88 finally before the new one came out. Haha

      @@popcornroulettereactions Interesting concept! I guess it’s not quite as egregious as watching the Star Wars prequels before the OG trilogy. The big reveals that most of us got to experience would definitely be revealed. And I do see some merit from doing it in story order for some. I personally think they work best chronologically because you start off with more of a James Bondsian Indiana Jones and then Raiders and Last Crusade sort of tell the one two punch of Indy's conflicts with Nazis around two Christian stories. Plus from a romantic standpoint, you kind of know that Indy and Willie aren't going to last so it's not crazy that a year later he'd hook up again with Marion for a short time before being single again and seduced by a Nazi. Also puts Raiders and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull one movie closer together for that plot point.
      Also, SpaceCamp was great - our first real introduction to Joaquin Phoenix.

    What you should really do, for context, is watch some of the old Republic and Universal serials. This is where Lucas got the inspiration for both Indiana Jones and Star Wars. It would seem that Indy is mostly based on the Republic serials (see "Zorro's Black Whip" for simpler versions of many of the scenes) and Star Wars is more Universal (including the scrolling text).

    Loved your reaction to this classic. It's probably my second favorite after Raiders, however I'm debating between it and the Last Crusade. At 9:25 in regards to your comment on where it was filmed, from what I've heard it was filmed in Sri Lanka. My idea is that the Indian government at the time didn't approve of the film being shot on the mainland due to it's portrayal of the country and elements of the hindu faith, such being how the goddess "Kali" is portrayed. The actor who actually plays the head of the village was a Sri Lankan actor who didn't speak any English, and simply repeated what he heard Spielberg tell him to say with a headpiece in his ear.

    * I like that. "Indiana Jones it!" I'm gonna have to remember that for bedroom nocturnal activities. Maybe even play some Indiana Jones music, who knows. Oh, by the way, do you remember those 2 other adventures that Chatter Lal mentioned at "dinner"? If you're interested, the one that he said took place in Madagascar was an adventure called *Indiana* *Jones* *and* *the* *Jewel* *of* *Heaven* which mostly takes place in *Madagascar* *1931* It was actually the Sultan of Zanzibar: "Sultan Khalifa bin Harub". He hired Indy to find the "Jewel of Heaven" sapphire, but double crossed Indy when he found it, and tried to have Indy killed.
    * Indy escaped with Jock Lindsey in his plane, both to within an inch of their lives, but not before the Sultan screamed at him: *"I* *WILL* *CUT* *YOUR* *BALLS* *OFF* *IF* *YOU* *EVER* *RETURN* *TO* *MY* *ISLAND!!!"* and his voice echoed through the jungle, kind of like Belloq's did. Unfortunately, they don't have a full story for this one yet but, the other adventure that Chatter Lal mentions is called *Indiana* *Jones* *and* *the* *Crystal* *Skull* *of* *Cozan* which takes place in *Honduras* *1933* where Indy finds and enters *The* *Temple* *of* *the* *Serpent* in search of "The Crystal Skull of Cozan". If you'd like to read about it, most of the story is the prologue of that Indiana Jones novel called *Indiana* *Jones* *and* *the* *Philosopher's* *Stone*
    * Oh, one thing I forgot to mention. The adventure of Indy's called *Indiana* *Jones* *and* *the* *Temple* *of* *the* *Forbidden* *Eye* takes place immediately after *Indiana* *Jones* *and* *the* *Temple* *of* *Doom* and quite literally *IS* the ride that you said you went on at Disneyland in Anaheim, CA. The ride consists of you being in a military troop transport vehicle(which is actually an enhanced motion vehicle or EMV). They have the *Indiana* *Jones* *Epic* *Stunt* *Spectacular!* amusement show in Disney's Hollywood Studios at Disney World in Bay Lake, FL.

    I agree. Raiders should’ve been first. It’s not that it’s a bad choice for the first film, (TOD is actually my personal favorite )but there are a couple underlying jokes that you won’t get unless you saw Raiders first.

    Temple of Doom is known as the dark Indiana Jones film. This film is one of the movies that forced the MPAA to create the PG-13 rating. Last Crusade ended up being a lot lighter as a result.

      @@popcornroulettereactions Generally, I believe in watching any movie series in chronological order* (if you're first coming to them long after their initial theatrical runs, anyway) since often times I feel certain aspects in prequel movies tend to get undermined if you've already seen the later-set outings. While it's not as big of a deal with this series since all the movies are largely self-contained, release order _does_ interfere with Indy's overall character arc from beginning to end. But, again, thanks for doing this.
      *Star Wars is the exception; I prefer to have people strategically alternate between both trilogies the first time around (to both preserve the big OT revelations _and_ to avoid spoiling the events of the PT), and _then_ watch them chronologically in all subsequent viewings in order to get the full flow of the saga.

    Glad you didn’t hate the character Willie. Most reactors, after seeing Indy and Marion’s relationship from raiders, vehemently dislike Willie. I won’t deny that she is pretty annoying but that was how the character was written. She was meant to be the helpless, annoying, damsel in distress. Which is exactly how a bunch of men writers in the early 1980s would portray the type.

    • @popcornroulettereactions
      @popcornroulettereactions  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that's another benefit of watching Temple of Doom before Raiders because Willie is sort of a letdown after Marion

    • @ComeOnIsSuchAJoy
      @ComeOnIsSuchAJoy ปีที่แล้ว

      Willie is definitely closer to Indy's type in this movie, since here he's more jaded and self-interested, thus being more concerned with making money off of artifacts than preserving them (he seems to have his turning point at the end when he tells the head villager that he now realizes the power of such things). So a shallow, pampered showbiz type would seem right up his alley.

  • @user-et6pj4db9s
    @user-et6pj4db9s 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

    You really should've watched Raiders first, too late now, Lucas did intend Indiana Jones to be "better than Bond" hence the homage to Bond in this second film opening but that's why you don't get the desert beginning cos that's what Raiders gives you, the intro to the world of the character. This wasn't shot in India it was shot in Sri Lanka cos India felt Speilberg was being racist with the depictions of their culture so banned them from filming there (Indians dont eat any of that stuff, that was more a depiction of the cultists, the Thugee cult was a real Indian cult which is who these bad guys are sposed to be) And yes the Aqua Doctor Jones song is pretty much parodying this character.
