Val was making The Saint, so scheduling didn’t line up for him to do Batman & Robin as well as not getting along with Joel made it fairly easy for Joel to look for a replacement. While in the documentary of the making of Batman & Robin he says he was upset with Val mainly he let everyone know the last hour he wouldn’t make the next Batman film as I guess they all assumed he’d return as well as I believe he had a contract to do another Batman film, but due to how difficult Val is to work with it wasn’t something people were going to fight Val on to return and so Joel chose George Clooney after drawing the Bat Cowal over Clooney’s head on a From Dusk Till Dawn poster.
