Hey Clifford, I wanted to thank you for all the content you have put out. Because of your videos, I found Sophia, got my BLS from UMPI in six weeks, and am 20 days into my MBA at WGU and only have four classes left. All in about one year.
UMPI takes the most Sophia credits. It was all about the fast track for me. They will take 90 credits. My wife just finished her 90 with Sophia in 4 months and will start UMPI on September 1st. She should from start to finish have a BLS in 7 months. @hinaa8229
Thank you so much for having me on Ciff! I'm glad I was able to share my story and inspire some folks. You do a lot of great things for the autodidact community, and I wish you the best. If anyone wants to follow me on youtube, I'll be happy to respond to any questions sent in addition to covering topics within the tech/cybersecurity space. Still working on getting everything up and running, but my first two topics will be my experiences with WGU in addition to my writeups for a cybersecurity 'capture the flag' competition I participated in recently. Just trying to juggle my master's program, my family, working a seasonal job, and finding a long term position so video content is on the backburner right now.
Awesome story Jason! Glad to hear you sought it out and got it done. While our tech standards are high in Mass, there are a TON of tech opportunities! I’m sure you’ll land that perfect position in no time! Good luck, you’re an inspiration!
Pell Grants are awesome! I’ll be finishing my BABA at UMPI this fall with a net income from grants of $1550 (after Sophia cost etc are subtracted). If you’re an independent adult, it’s worth filling out the FAFSA
Traditional education doesn't fit everyone. In fact there is a lot of expensive required fluff in most college programs and also K-12. Many people, myself included, are more independent learners.. Fortunately, there are alternative pathways now for people to get that piece of paper to further their careers.
Absolutely. When I was in high school a friend of mine was really struggling with traditional high school, and at the time I didn't appreciate how dropping out might have been the best move for him. My parents didn't want me to go to a vocational school, but truthfully I think it would have been a better move at the time. Even if I went to college afterwards, it would have given me a much bigger leg up in my field to have more formal experience when I was a teenager. There is a ton of political conversations around the education system, and I agree that we need a reform. It would be great if the education system could foster learning instead of trying to shove everyone into the same mold. Not everyone learns best through lectures, or can memorize a bunch of facts. It takes all kinds for us to move forward and do great things.
Congrats Jason! I feel in the same boat right now, how old were you when you started college again before graduating? I feel sometimes that it's too late for me being in my early 30s, but I think I'll give it a try 🤗
It’s never to late to go after your dreams and check off a goal My Bishop never went to college. Started in his 50s. He just graduated with his masters and is on the getting his doctorates. My great grandfather was the oldest graduate from Ohio state university he got his MD. He worked as a physician until he passed away🕊️ With these schools you can finish sooner than later. Go for it 🥰💕✨
I commend Jason on his efforts. I'm sure that was a tough 11 months. However, I find this to be sadly ironic, because I predict that in the near future we will have AI writing software for us. Humans will be for prompts and debugging.
Still - somebody will have to run the AI : ) I remember these same concerns about computers getting rid of jobs for humans, back when the PC was new-ish, in the 80's. It turned out that while computers got rid of some jobs, they also *created* a lot more jobs, in tech fields.
@@annai157 I remember when they said computers would replace paper. No more paperwork or mailboxes. It seems now we have more paper than ever plus all the electronic forms.
I've been learning more about AI because I'm a giant nerd. While I wouldn't say it lacks a place in computing entirely, what we're seeing is a need for correction, consolidation, and inputs. That is to say, a need for more information so AI can generate code from what we supply it with. It might be able to spit code like it's nothing, but it can't be correct, systematic, or condense for clarity or function what it outputs. Thus, we humans still have a place getting through to AI when it comes to writing and maintaining codes or computers. A huge amount of AI is also back-end maintenance from, you guessed it, humans. If the system fails for a variety of reasons, no power, no internet connection, delayed or severed connectivity while there is a cache and save option like most programs as a default it ALWAYS depends on making sure things are maintained in the background. (AUTOSAVE, hard river backups, on-site computer hardware power ect) AI code is good but sloppy in many instances. You need to have a background in computing rudiments to fix the bugs. Certain automated tasks people can program out of their schedule without AI, but AI put the tools to non tech literate people. If the system fails, AI has no tech support debug features beyond a few help wizard (read, limited) tool kits. More bugs and more features mean it's a more complex system. I know, a repetition of my earlier point. Essentially, AI is a tool, but it isn't a replacement for all workers. It's up to us to set good work practices and pay grades for those people who are essential to making our world run. The use of new tools doesn't mean jobs are destroyed it means we learn to use these tools in different ways.
I have 56 college credits. I have been out of college for 14 years. This is my first time watching your videos. I’m inspired to finish my degree. What would you recommend? Thank you 🙏🏿
Thank you this was so inspiring So if we take the Sophia courses and transfer Them into WGU can we apply for financial aid ❓🥰✨💕 He didn’t go into detail on exactly what he used besides the scholarships that helped lower his cost. Did he use financial aid❓ I noticed that WGU has FASFA on their website. How does that work with hacking❓ Thank you and your beautiful wife for all that you do🥰✨💕
Transferring in courses from Sophia/Study to WGU IS what makes it less expensive :) Those platforms cost less than WGU tuition, so you save money. You can still use FAFSA directly for WGU costs if you qualify, yes.
We had planned on it, but after doing some additional research they aren’t as hackable as they originally looked, so it’s on the back burner for now. They don’t offer any new majors not already offered by other more hackable, less expensive schools that we talk about.
What would you be able to do to help high school kids go down the college hacked path? I'm the director of a homeschool hybrid school, and I want my students to have this opportunity!
Hey, Pattie! Send me an email at clifford@collegehacked.com if you would, and we can talk options. We offer a few different ways of helping for groups specifically. And we love helping homeschoolers. Lauren and I were both homeschooled. So we love to pass it on.
Sounds cool! If you’re going into it blindly that’s not ideal, but that doesn’t mean it won’t turn out to be a good direction. Try getting on LinkedIn to search for people who have the kind of job you want and see what they do/where they went to school, etc. It will give you a lot more information to work with. :)
Not aware of any Michigan schools that accept Sophia/Study, but many will accept CLEP exams. You should be able to hack about a third of the degree that way.
