  • I made this tutorial for my fans who were asking for a guide on how to convert their old childhood tapes and here it is! You don't need any expensive software, you only need old hardware that still works and a converter that is readable by your computer.
In this guide, I will help you understand the fundamentals on converting old tapes. Do let me know if you need any help and I will answer them in the comments section below.
Why you should convert your tapes now

Thank you for this amazing video! From start (re. cables and what each is for) to finish, it was SO helpful. The only problem I had was with the studio view, but once I googled that I was good to go. I had great results grabbing old home Hi8 videos (btw 640x480 was the best resolution for me). Thank you thank you thank you for a fantastic, SUCCINCT tutorial!!! JUST ENOUGH and NOT TOO MUCH! Very well done!

While the sound may only be in mono you can get an audio splitter to send it to both sides. I do this on my NES to my Crt. It makes the sound come out of both sides even though the nes has only one audio jack. It would not be true stereo but during playback, if watching with headphones you would hear the audio in both ears.

Once you convert a VHS cassette to digital there can be lots of dead tape space that got converted. Those segments of converted video can be hard to find and not needed. PyVHS is a Python package that removes those unused tape spaces. PyPi and GitHub is where PyVHS is located. Say you converted a lot of videos and do not want to manually edit them then they can automatically be removed while you do something else.

Find yourself a Sony Digital8 cam that outputs through the DV port via FireWire, those old Sony camcorder takes old analog tapes and converts it to digital and even has a time base corrector to deal with distortions and jittering. The cheap $10 dongle and Elegato tend to suffer from jittering/distorted images probably since they don't have a built in TBC. I didn't realize how crappy the Elegato capture was until I used the Digital8. Also for post processing use QTGMC deinterlace and your home videos will look amazing in digital playback.

Hi! Good tutorial man! I'm getting an issue that hopefully you can solve. OBS is recording fine, however, audio is quite too low and noisy. If I increment the dBs, obviously the noise is powered. Do you have any idea what it could be? Cables, VHS reproducer? Inherent to the recordings?
When I record Hi8 with my camera that noise is pretty low in comparison with the VHS :(
Do you apply any processing to the audio signal when recording?

On my Sony TV which has 3 phono typical socket: yellow for composite video and both red and white sockets, for audio. Now it does matter which socket you use for audio as if you put a mono phono (often black on older cameras) in the red phono socket you just get audio from the right channel (and while mono it still sounds odd as in unbalanced and TV needs to be made louder as only one side speaker working) but if you put a mono audio signal in the white (left) phono socket on the TV you will get audio from both speakers all be it in mono but it will sound far better and louder then just an unbalanced mono from one speaker on one side of the TV.

However there is another one called "tangxi" which is £77.49 atm on Amazon. Think this might be the one I wanted but it was unavailable at the time. Also recommend getting gold plated RCA cables as this apparently will help contain the buzzing sounds. Should be about £10. Also my RCA cables had the wrong colours on them and this caused more noise so check if the video is actually coming through the yellow video wire. The additional noise came when my video RCA wire was plugged into an audio RCA output. There is still a very low electrical hum sound under the audio but not really noticeable and not sure if that's just there anyway. Best of luck with it!

I bought gold plated cables but there are parts of the video that are not colored when being recorded, it becomes black and white but the video being played in video cam is colored and in high quality. The quality of the sound is not too good also. Is it because of the cables or the quality really changes when being recorded?

    • @imraphraph

      It can be several factors,
