Learn your place and stay in your lane
The guy in his boat, is disabled (missing a leg). They stopped his disability check, and he just needs help, he has no money. It's not uncommon for certain people to never ask for help, or to feel undeserving of help. Guy just needs help and encouragement, he just needs to know that he matters.
He has a young man who has been helping him every day for a long time with clothes, food, money etc. ...he even raised extra $7000 for him also . He has funds BUT STILL THINKS HE WILL SURVIVE ....hope he has a permanent marker.

I love how everubody forgets the financial aspect of evacuation like yeah u work minimum wage and barely afford tent just leave and go too another state with little too no money. Bring able too abruptly relocate is a luxury not a norm
If you own a coastal home in Florida, your not working minimum wage😅😅 only coastal towns being evacuated, you have money enough to drive inland and spend the night in your car and save your car and your life at the very least.

There are shelters! Your not guaranteed to be safe there but much more likely. They also said if you can't get too one, call them and they will come get you. Not once the storm hits... then your on your own.

J slept through helene? Hate to say it, but Bro is already dead, helene just passed next to tampa, it didnt even hit. He probably just got some thunderstorms from the outer bands at most. Milton will be a DIRECT hit. Helene was also just a CAT2 when it passed tampa and though the killer of a hurricane is the stormserge, his boat is gonna be very vulnerable to the CAT4 - CAT5 winds that milton is bringing, not just the stormsurge...

This Lt Dan is indigent disabled man with no funds. He doesn't want to leave his only home. I don't think he will survive a Cat 4 direct hurricane but he sounds very stubborn. The city should let him dry dock his boat somewhere and get to a shelter to ride out the storm.

@@mike_w-tw6jd Alot of people don't have the money for gas/hotels, etc, and aren't aware of how to get assistance from the government. Some are disabled. Then there are people like prisoners where we've seen multiple times in the past prisoners drown in their cells because they don't get evacuated.
But that's the floridian way, stay and complain later that the government didn't do enough 😅

I forgot about that. I remember the families that refused to evacuate their homes on the mountain of Mt St Helens before the volcano blew up. None of them or their homes were ever found. That did a lot of good. Oh well, some people just let them go, we're fine without them.
As a seasoned sailor whose life is now contained in a flimsy RV, I understand that guy. But he's a fool IMO. Whatever ground tackle he could deploy during the worst conditions should already be employed now. Nothing he could do onboard during the peak winds and surge could help his boat survive. And, with all this PR, he could crowdfund a new or newly salvaged one in a day.

Not everyone can evacuate. Not everyone owns a car. Not everyone can afford the gas or a hotel room. You have elderly people on supplemental O2 and/or who are bed-ridden. Some of the poorest neighborhoods in Florida are pretty close to the coast.

FEMA left a bad taste in everyone's mouth during and well after Katrina. I want to look deeper into this, as I believe there is still reason to be leary.
When large storms are headed to an area, there should be some kind of FEMA or government evacuation assistance BEFORE the storm hits. Low income, homeless, disabled, and seniors living on social security should be able to quickly apply for emergency aid to evacuate. People have no money, nowhere to go, and no supplies or resources to evacuate.
During Beryl here in Texas, we didn't get FEMA applications available until a week after the storm. No power for a WEEK in Texas heat while waiting for FEMA to help people who had no resources. Then, when people got approved for hotel assistance, hotels made it so hard to get a room!
I was safe with my family at home with no power, but neighbors had their houses smashed by trees and had to get hotels paying cash the day Beryl hit. So when other people who needed help getting to a safe place were finally approved for lodging assistance, hotels decided not to accept FEMA because they were able to price gouge the people paying cash.

I don't have a degree on engineering, but can't they buried most of the debris with the dispersed sand on the roads? Then pick up after the storm has pass? It won't help 100% but definitely will minimize the dangers of items becoming projectiles. Yes I know the rail will washed the sand away, just a theory

I am a compassionate person but anyone who refuses to leave during mandatory evacuations ... need not call 911 for help when they are underwater and losing their lives. Turnpike was north bound on both sides when Andrew was approaching.
The city would save more money with assistance paying for evacuations through bussing ppl out or offering hotels for those that are homeless, pay for gas, etc. Instead of telling people to evacuate who can't afford it and deal with the number of bodies that the city will have to clean up.
EVERYONE is not being told to evacuate. People in specific areas (“Zones”) have been mandated to leave and they definitely should. Others are not in evacuation zones and/or do not have the means to leave. And even if everyone had the means to leave, Florida does not have the infrastructure for every person to be on the roads exiting the state within a 2-3 day span, gas stations are empty and roads are still affected from Helene. The reporting on this has been terrible, nothing but sensationalist crap.
