  • Come join us we try Croatian Food at a local restaurant (Konoba Fetivi) specializing in seafood dishes, risotto and mediterranean cuisine. It has often been our experience that the best recommendations for restaurants and foods worth trying in a new destination are from locals, so we were thrilled when our airbnb host recommended we try seafood and risotto at Konoba Fetivi. Overall, we ended up ordering quite a bit for our lunch in Croatia:
    1) Local red wine
    2) Pipi (Croatian orange soda)
    3) Fried shrimp with lemon juice
    4) Black risotto cuttlefish
    5) White cheese risotto
    6) Apple strudel but we wanted to try Rožata
    7) Fig liqueur (local Croatian drink)

Trying Croatian Food in Split, Croatia Travel Video Transcript:
Alright guys so it is lunchtime here in Split. We just arrived yesterday and we were asking our airbnb host for recommendations for her favorite restaurants and this was one place she mentioned for seafood. It is called Konoba Fetivi. We've just arrived like as soon as they opened we were by the door. It has got a great little courtyard. This is maybe is this our first meal outside in a courtyard in 2018? It is finally warm enough. Just barely. Borderline. I still have my coat over my shoulders. It is like low teens. We've got some sunshine and blue skies. It feels rustic. We're going to enjoy some seafood.
Tell me about the drink you got. The name caught my attention. Pipi. Our waiter said it is like the Croatian fanta but even better. Better than fanta. And I have to agree. I had a sip too. I had a sip already. It is more juicy. It is like more fruity.
They have just brought out yeah all of the food. This is our appetizer. We got the fried shrimp and I love how they serve it.
This is a tile. This is like a tile off of a roof. Oh wow, that is what it is? That is the best. My house in South America used to have tiles like this.
Just some brown paper and then our shrimp. We doused it in lemon juice too. Perfect with lemon. A little bit of course sea salt on top.
We are going to move on to the risotto even though we have lots of shrimp to work with.
Okay now try the black one too. And I'll eat some of the black risotto. Some of the cuttlefish. Black squid ink. We've got some little shrimp, black pepper it looks creamy.
You can taste a little bit of the white wine. I like how creamy it is. I like the taste of the cuttlefish.
So dessert time. Dessert time. Well guys we ended up going with apple strudel. I know it is not the most local thing. What was the one that we wanted to get but they didn't have?
We wanted to try something called Rožata. Which is a local caramel pudding.
You can tell tonnes of apple in there.
    Really good. Really juicy.
A little tipple. A little liquor. A little liquor and this is local date. Fig!
The color of your hair. And your moustache. And your beard. If you've ever had date or fig syrup. It has got that kind of taste and then potency of the alcohol. This is just a beautiful way to end off an awesome meal. Let's enjoy that cake. And then I've got to do a lot of walking after to burn. To burn off all of these calories. It has been a big meal.
Finished that meal. Time to assess the damage. That was 343 Kuna or 46 Euros. Not the cheapest meal but my gosh that was delicious. So that included the two risottos. That included the shrimp appetizer. That included the wine and your soft drink. The dessert drink. And the dessert of course. Overall a fantastic meal. We absolutely love that place. If you guys come here you've got to check it out for sure.
This is part of our Travel in Croatia video series showcasing Croatian food, Croatian culture and Croatian cuisine.

One of my favorite parts about traveling is the presentation of food in different places, not just the food itself. In America or Canada, I would never think to see food served on a roof tile. But some restaurants do it in Hanoi and now Croatia. Since I can't try the amazing food you guys try, I'll just admire the cool presentation and add it to my endless bucket list. Great video as always! I always look forward to your videos. They put a smile on my face every time!

The winter at the coast is mostly mild .... here in Split it mostly between 10-15 degrees BUT it can happen that it is even colder than that. This year we also had 2 days snow which doesn't happen that often...it is rare.

prawn tail can be razor sharp even after frying so it is much safer not to eat it whole....instead you just break them where its body meets the head and pull all the juicy bits out.....for me prawns are all about the texture and dressing/marinade.... they have such delicate taste that even the lightest marinade overtake the taste and you need about a tonne to get your belly full....

For you VR fans like myself, the entire region around Split is covered in both full 3D and 360 degree Street View images in the new Google Earth VR version. Even the extensive white rock mountains to the north are fully covered in full 3D and 360 degree "street views" by hikers with what are now cheap 360 degree cameras. And Street View from actual streets takes you right to the front door of Konoba Fetivi. It is just like having your own private cab and touring helicopter. That restaurant is within easy walking distance from the large tour boat ports of which several tour boats were in port when the 3D photogrammetry imagery was shot down at 45 degrees from a low flying airplane above in 5 different directions in order to get all sides of everything. Massive computers in large banks amazingly do the rest to create a massive 3D model of the entire region from above. Welcome to the new world of virtual reality. FYI - The Google so-called "street view" library part now has over 3 BILLION 360 degree images of the world from all prospectives. GEVR with both street views and the 3D models is considered one of the few VR "killer apps" by VR enthusiasts. They have not figured out how to reproduce the food and wine however. BTW - GEVR does not work on the new low cost and self-contained Oculus "Go". And about 1300 entire regions around the world have been captured this way so far.

46 euro's for 2 people is actually not bad from what I have noticed in Croatia. We spend about 30 euro's a person each night in Croatia because the food is pretty expensive there. In Bosnia we spend I believe 40 euro's including tip for 3 people for a massive meat platter, drinks and dessert, and then in Croatia it sometimes ended up being 90 euro's for the same but not as tasty food. It's a shame Croatia is so expensive because the food is pretty amazing.

Thanks for sharing that. Indeed, we found Bosnia to be quite a bit cheaper in terms of prices of food. I think maybe the key to having more affordable meals would be to eat away from the centre or touristy zones.

Samuel and Audrey - Travel and Food Videos We did, that's the strange part. We only ate away from the touristy parts in Croatia because in Split town centre and especially Dubrovnik, it was just insane. The one time we ate in Split our meal was a bit more expensive, absolutely amazing, but we just got the tiniest portion so we decided not to do that again haha.

Sorry, but for example, the price of minced meat used in meat plata is way cheaper than cuttlefish for risotto. In Split you also have a lot of resturants where you may eat delicious burgers, pizzas and meat platter for a cheaper price.
All depends on what you want, some traditional food is expensive because its ingredients.
But I also do not deny that some places set their price higher because of their name and popularity.
I suggest you to visit Pecado resturant to try burgers and resturant Calypso that is a bit far from the centre, if you want a bit cheaper options.
Also, if you didnt try traditional meal "Pašticada" yet, I suggest that also.

Anđela Pijuk I definitely agree and we have also tried other meals including a complete fish platter with all types of more expensive fish, so I do understand but I do feel like because of the location a lot of places like to charge way more for a lot less food. The same thing in Dubrovnik.

Cynthia Bernardy I agree for Dubrovnik, Dubrovnik is the most expencive city in Croatia to visit, even without food.
But in every other city in Croatia there may be found places with "normal" prices.

"Dragi Sam i Audrey", Dear Sam and Audrey'.
Most ,if not all, of the calamary and cuttlefish ( and haddock/merluza ) You would be offered as "local" in Europe,Spain,Greece and other countries, comes from Argentina's territorial waters under the usurpation of the British imperialistic occupation of the Malvinas Islands and other South Atlantic islands belonging to Argentina.
Brittain "sells" the fishing "permits" to any hungry 'first world" nation wiling to loot Argentina's sovereign waters and marine wealth.
And so they do,telling tourists the happy tale of the "delicious" Mediterranean and Adristic sea seafood.
Being of Dalmatian descent and having relatives in Dalmatia, I've been told, that long since, fishing in both seas its not enough any more to feed the countries of the region, much less the millions of tourists that visit the region and the rest of Europe every year.
So looting Argentina's natural wealth with the help of the historic bully keeps being the "best" way of "enjoying" a good seafood meal for the Europeans.
