BOOK FORMATTING IN WORD | Chapter headers and header images

  • As indie authors, we are responsible for our books' formatting, and that process can be intimidating if you're just getting started. I've formatted all of my own books in Microsoft Word, and along the way I've taught myself how to do so in a way that looks and feels professional and often includes eye-catching visual elements.
    In today's video, I'll show you one of my favorite formatting tricks: including images in your chapter headers. I'll also be showing you some other parts of chapter header formatting, including drop caps. Chapter headers are one of the trickiest parts of creating a print book, but once you have it down, it's not too bad and really adds that extra special touch to your formatting.
    Demo manuscript for you to download and see the formatting from this video: www.dropbox.co...

    Thank you all so much for checking out this video series and for your likes and comments. I'm so glad it's been helpful for so many of you.
    I've had a ton of people asking questions about specific formatting issues or problems, and while I would love to answer all of them, I simply don't have the time (or the knowledge sometimes) to respond to every specific question. Microsoft Word isn't the best or the easiest formatting tool out there, so it is pretty tricky to get things right.
    Most of what I've shown here was learned through trial and error and many, many Google searches. You can find many of the solutions to your problems that way. I'm sorry I can't respond to every single question but I wish you all the best of luck in your formatting endeavors!

    It is almost embarrassing how much I don't know about MS Word considering how much I use it. This was great and will be watching all of your posts.

    Hi! Can you please help me with something. I've followed all your instructions, checked "different first page" and "different odd/even pages" but when I insert a header in a chapter, that header shows up everywhere! I can't figure out what to do because if I delete it for another page, it deletes from the chap header. Please help!

    This was an awesome tutorial, I really got a lot out of it! The only adjustment you might consider is instead of adding the section break as "Next Page", I think the standard is to always start new chapters on the right side, so maybe add the section break as "Odd Page" instead. All your instructions are still working for me when I do this, so just a tip. Thanks!

      You absolutely can do it that way if you want to, I have seen trad and indie books published both ways. I personally dislike the blank page that is sometimes left if you have a chapter that ends on an odd page and then start the new chapter on an odd page, so I like to do mine this way. But whatever works for you! Thanks for the comment, glad the video was helpful!

    Thank you so much for your video tutorials. I am a new indie author, so short on budget, as well as, knowledge on all things self-publishing...so your easy-to-understand videos on formatting have been a godsend. I have just finished my second book and was getting nervous about how to do things on my own....so finding this highly informative video has been a blessing.

    I LOVED this video and it helped me out a lot. What I would like to see is a way to delete page numbers on pages (like the dedication and acknowledgements) for print without disrupting the rest of the book.

    • @ta_hernandez5
      @ta_hernandez5  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you separate those parts of the book as a new section (by inserting a section break rather than a page break right before the actual book starts/chapter 1) you should be able to get rid of them. :)

    Wow thanks for this. What is the difference between section break and page break? I've been using page break. Is that why the header pics auto updates for each chapter for you? Because of choosing section break?

    • @ta_hernandez5
      @ta_hernandez5  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think so. Section breaks allow you a little more flexibility as far as being able to divide the book up and make sure that each section does it's own thing rather than having the chapter headers match the title page and the acknowledgements match the copyright, etc. If you just use page breaks all of those things will be the same section and the section-specific formatting you apply will then carry over to the whole thing. Hopefully that makes sense.

    Thank you for the video and showing some creative ways to format one's manuscript.
    What size font do you use for chapter title and number?

    • @ta_hernandez5
      @ta_hernandez5  ปีที่แล้ว

      In this final, printed book, I have the font at size 10 or 11, I believe. The chapter header is something like 16-20. One thing I recommend doing is printing a page with the chapter header and body text in a few different sizes (but on the paper size you'd be using in the final book, i.e. 9x6) to see what looks best.

    Do you have a video showing how to add header for next and rest of the chapter? I'm having trouble figuring out how to format p1 of chapter different from p2+. Ex -- how do I get page # in footer on first page of chapter AND ongoing page number at bottom & author name on even pages & chapter name on odd pages? :)

  • @MWinklerBooks
    @MWinklerBooks 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    You make it look so easy! :D Thanks so much for that.
    Apologies if I asked before, but will you be doing a video on how to make sure the Header and footers are right? Like for Title and author in the header and page number in the footer. That's what tripped me up the most. I think it had to do with the section breaks and whether it was carry on from previous... or whatever that's called LOL

    • @ta_hernandez5
      @ta_hernandez5  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It really isn't too hard once you get the hang of it; its just tedious and finicky.
      And yes, that video should be posting tomorrow morning actually. :)

  • @TaniasWritingRealm

    So, I inserted a picture into the header in Chapter 1, but it shows up on EVERY page in the chapters section, not just at the top of a chapter. What could i be doing wrong?

    • @ta_hernandez5
      @ta_hernandez5  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There's a checkbox in the header toolbar that's marked "different first page." You need to make sure that you're on the first page when inserting the chapter header image AND that that checkbox is marked.

      @@ta_hernandez5 Hmmm.... It's still not working. i've used section brakes between each chapter. I've selected different first page, and only the very first page of the entire manuscript doesn't have the image. The link to previous is greyed out so i can't select or unselect it.

I click on the lock anchor but the pictures are still moving around and I am worried when I make the epub file for Ingramspark the photos will move and they will print it with the photos displaced. How can I make sure the file stays intact once I convert it to epub?

    Do you have a video on how to do that image spread across two pages? Also on how to ensure that your first chapter page is on the right hand side

    • @ta_hernandez5
      @ta_hernandez5  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The other videos in this series do cover both of those things at some point. I think this one on page numbers talks about getting chapter one on page 1 on the right hand side: th-cam.com/video/9MVpdQcDpSk/w-d-xo.html
      And then this one should cover image spreads across 2 pages: th-cam.com/video/DkoK8_qE0iI/w-d-xo.html

    Hi Tanni: Question: I am formatting a book with 3 short stories. When placing header images, I'm understanding that because each story is of a different theme, that I cannot use the 'header' to input the image. Can you do a video on placing images for a different story within a book without using the header insert? Thank you in advance Tanni!

    • @ta_hernandez5
      @ta_hernandez5  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry I'm so slow responding and maybe you've figured out the issue already. But if I'm understanding your question correctly, you are wanting three different images in the headers rather than having them all be the same header. I did this with one of my other novels and I think I ended up having to make each chapter (or short story, in your case) a separate section. So rather than inserting a page break, I inserted a section break between each chapter, and that would allow me to make each header different. I hope that helps.
