Foreigners don't really need to worry too much about being seen as unintentionally rude. There's "Foreigner allowance" and Japanese generally just attribute these things to "Well, can't be helped, they aren't from here" and don't expect you to know all the ins and outs of social decorum. They'll also notice and appreciate when you make the effort to observe Japanese social norms, or attempt to blend in vis a vis dresscode, language, mannerisms etc. On the other hand, the longer you stay here, the more that "Foreigner allowance" can start to hurt, because it starts becoming a reminder that everyone who doesn't know you still sees you as "not from around here" by default.
Having returned from Japan just a week ago I found there wasn't really a language barrier. Most had a little understanding of english, I relied on my phone once. The rail system was super easy. What I did find scary was the glass floor in Tokyo Tower!

I can relate to the anxiety of standing out too much or accidentally offending someone. I was more worried about that during my study abroad days in my early 20s. Less self-conscious as a teacher in my thirties. Taxes, city hall, filling out forms, etc=still stressful. Was scared of mukade and those giant hornets. Creepy seasonal tree spiders. I’m a Californian but I was more terrified of being in an earthquake in Japan than I ever was in the US, I think because of the risk of tsunami. Also, going back to standing out-yes, Japan is way safer than the US and usually I wasn’t worried about being out by myself, but as a woman who stands out, you do sometimes attract some weirdos. I’ve been followed twice at night and even harassed once during the day, soooo it still happens if you can’t help but draw some attention to yourself. It was very scary, Especially when one of the times at night the man who is following me was very angry and aggressive. It took away my sense of safety and security in Japan. All of my gaijin lady friends who live/lived there long enough have stories too, worse than mine. Rarely happens but it does happen🤷♀️ When it does happen it’s quite scary so women should always be prepared no matter what country they’re in.
Well as a 45 yr old man, who lived on/off in tokyo for 5 years, here are my biggest fears if I return. 1. The cost of everything. 2. Boredom. 3. Living in an apartment,that's the size of an American walk in closet. Japanese companies treat foreigners that work for them as sub-human.
I am japanese, but I am afraid of getting used to be peaceful. It is not usual to have food, convince stores, fresh air, cars and etc. We can do whatever we want in japan nowadays but we have to think that being usual is not usual.
I think the most stressed out I get is when I have to fill out paperwork in Japanese. Most of the time I know how to fill it out but I still get super stressed because I have had instances where I forgot about something and then the process of going to fix it is a pain
I’ve been there for 1 year and a half, and tbh felt pretty safe overall... the occasional quake would happen like once or twice through the year, so it was no biggie... dying from eating mochi scares me more tbh. 😂

There is no danger there besides overworking culture. It's as safe as South Korea. In fact they're quite similar now. But the actual danger of these 2 countries is a psychological one. The Japanese have become so submissive and over sensitive that a lot of men find the idea of dating a person scary. Becoming too sensitive is bad as you find it harder to take risks and become scared of expressing your emotions to the point where the japanese see breaking even a very small rule is the worst crime to be ever committed. Even being direct and saying no is scary which it shouldn't. Edit: Forgot to add there is actually a big problem which is groping, sexual assault and sexism happening to japanese women and even foreign women. Hopefully this issue will be resolved but the problem is a lot of the women are too scared to speak out against it. Hopefully soon there will be a large protest of women and action done to bring this large issue to attention.

Maybe a large demonstration of japanese women protesting as well as a petition to get attention from the government against the groping and sexual assault of women even foreign women on trains. No tsunamis and few earthquakes in Florida, but we do have poisonous fish, spiders and snakes, disease carrying mosquitoes, alligators and crocodiles, hurricanes & tornadoes, Snow Birds and tourists.
The first time I visited Japan, one day I got off the train at Osaka but I left my backpack on the train. My Japanese language ability is pretty bad. My backpack contained my passport, cash, wifi access point, spare phone battery. My phone battery was dying but luckily I had just enough battery power left on my phone. I connected to the free wifi at the station, so I was able to send my GF a "Help!" message. We had to go to Yasu station to retrieve my backpack. :) It all worked out in the end, but it was a horrible, scary experience when I realised I left my backpack on the train.
Here where I’m from, Oklahoma (in the big island across the pond), we have earthquakes (which just feels like a big truck or something going by), tornados, deadly small spiders (black widows, fiddlebacks, etc.), we have much more than our share of mosquitos, and when a hurricane hits Texas we get several days (9+) of nonstop rain (when it finally stops, the ground stays soggy FOREVER 😫). North Korea invading Japan would first have to go through South Korea which is perpetually prepared for a North Korean invasion; and North Korea is incredibly poor, anyways. The only real thing I’d be afraid of is losing my passport or it getting pickpocketed or something; another thing, I suppose, would be accidentally paying someone a GRAVE insult and coming off as intentionally doing so.

I used to live in Machida just outside of Tokyo and I saw one of those spiders in my bathroom once. I will never forget how big it was! I walked in, saw it, it saw me, and it rolled up into a little ball and went back down the tiny drain. I can laugh about it now but It was HUGE and SCARY 😂
What any foreigner in Japan really should be scared of is the total absence of civil rights. In Japan, the police can arrest you and put you in a cell with no phone calls, no visits and no lawyer for 23 days without pressing charges. What's more, once the initial 23 days have passed, they can rearrest you under a slightly different pretense and keep you in for another 23 days. This process can continue indefinitely until the police can extract a confession on whatever they plan to charge you with. Only then, they will press charges. 99% of all people trialed in Japan are convicted, and a majority of convictions are based on "confessions" obtained this way.

You can try to ignore the facts, which is also a very Japanese way of dealing with problems, but the reality remains that a man was arrested and kept in a cell for 108 days with no calls, no lawyers, no visits, and no hearing before a judge. That simply does not happen in a free country; that's the kind of stuff that happens in dictatorships and terror regimes. And, since this kind of "justice" happens in Japan all the time (Carlos Ghosn's case is just the one case that got on the news, but there are plenty like his) people considering going to Japan for tourism, studies, etc. need to be informed of the absence of civil rights that they will be exposed to.

But there are bad things happening here if one goes to bad places… So, cautions should be observed (and if you go to bad places all you have from the cops is “you shouldn’t go to bad places”.)

Jumping Spiders are worse, they are not venomous, but are able to move so sporadically, and unpredictably. They have a color scheme makes them look very intimidating, mostly black with white spots, and are as big as the span of a human thumb. They mostly eat Flies, so I find them mostly in or near trash cans.
Not afraid of Japan. Just rather stay here in U.S. I would be near my family. But also the coocoos are a threat and we need to sort of be together until everything is done and we are at peace.
What I'm afraid of in Japan. . .not being able to find a "Western" toilet, getting hit by a car, getting hit by a tour bus, getting trampled by people when it's time to cross a street in Tokyo, getting crush in a train during one of the commute hours, and, finally, accidentally insulting a member of the Yakuza. . . .
1) Finding a toilet should not be an issue... as long as you are in a city. 2 & 3) These are valid concerns 4) Unless you are clumsy beyond belief, then you will be fine 5) It actually feels good if you relax 6) You WON'T run into one in real life so don't worry. Even if you do, you won't even notice.
Actually, standing in a doorway IS standard advice if there is no table available. Like, if you're in a hotel room and there's no table, standing in the doorway is the best place to be. The doorway is structurally more sound than the rest of the room and there's no ceiling to cave in on you. If the earthquake is strong enough to collapse a hotel in Japan, it's The Big One and you'll be fucked no matter where you are. :P Their building codes are fierce, so don't assume that your building is going to come down. It won't.

I wold have a fear of being arrested in Japan. If you get in a fight, even though it's not your fault, you may be there for a while.
The police stop foreigners all the time and they will search thru your bags and wallet. You don't have to be doing anything and they will stop you.

I used to live in Machida just outside of Tokyo and I saw one of those spiders in my bathroom once. I will never forget how big it was! I walked in, saw it, it saw me, and it rolled up into a little ball and went back down the tiny drain. I can laugh about it now but It was HUGE and SCARY 😂

What any foreigner in Japan really should be scared of is the total absence of civil rights. In Japan, the police can arrest you and put you in a cell with no phone calls, no visits and no lawyer for 23 days without pressing charges.
What's more, once the initial 23 days have passed, they can rearrest you under a slightly different pretense and keep you in for another 23 days. This process can continue indefinitely until the police can extract a confession on whatever they plan to charge you with. Only then, they will press charges. 99% of all people trialed in Japan are convicted, and a majority of convictions are based on "confessions" obtained this way.
At least they feed you while you're in there.

Second, police can't rearrest people for the same fact. When a fact is applied a crime, police can't rearrest people for the fact evem if they apply other crime to the fact

@@中山健太郎-o5k I understand it is difficult to swallow being told to your face, but the reality is that Japan is a country with a total disregard for civil rights, much in the same way as North Korea or China.
You can try to ignore the facts, which is also a very Japanese way of dealing with problems, but the reality remains that a man was arrested and kept in a cell for 108 days with no calls, no lawyers, no visits, and no hearing before a judge.
That simply does not happen in a free country; that's the kind of stuff that happens in dictatorships and terror regimes.
And, since this kind of "justice" happens in Japan all the time (Carlos Ghosn's case is just the one case that got on the news, but there are plenty like his) people considering going to Japan for tourism, studies, etc. need to be informed of the absence of civil rights that they will be exposed to.
I'd just be afraid of accidentally eating shrimp, or something I might be similarly allergic to. So many wonderful-looking foods I have no idea what's in them. :) (Obviously a pretty manageable worry, but still. :) )

Wow! The only thing in Japan (besides natural disasters) I am personally afraid of is my wife and she is not Japanese. But there are bad things happening here if one goes to bad places… So, cautions should be observed (and if you go to bad places all you have from the cops is “you shouldn’t go to bad places”.)
It seems like I shouldn't be there only one afraid of needing health care and not being fluent in Japanese. I've heard Japanese doctors have terrible bedside manner.

Jumping Spiders are worse, they are not venomous, but are able to move so sporadically, and unpredictably. They have a color scheme makes them look very intimidating, mostly black with white spots, and are as big as the span of a human thumb. They mostly eat Flies, so I find them mostly in or near trash cans.

1) Finding a toilet should not be an issue... as long as you are in a city.
2 & 3) These are valid concerns
4) Unless you are clumsy beyond belief, then you will be fine
5) It actually feels good if you relax
6) You WON'T run into one in real life so don't worry. Even if you do, you won't even notice.

Actually, standing in a doorway IS standard advice if there is no table available. Like, if you're in a hotel room and there's no table, standing in the doorway is the best place to be. The doorway is structurally more sound than the rest of the room and there's no ceiling to cave in on you.
If the earthquake is strong enough to collapse a hotel in Japan, it's The Big One and you'll be fucked no matter where you are. :P Their building codes are fierce, so don't assume that your building is going to come down. It won't.
