    I've been on vacation, so I'm catching up on your videos! It's been fun to see all the woods, ouds and leathers in your collection. Woods are definitely my favorite notes out of those 3 categories. I haven't found many ouds I can love, but leather can be great.

    I am in the throws of re purchasing Versace again as I just re sniffed it and love it so much. Have not got my nose on it since 97. The closet thing I have is Dimensione Uomo from Ciccarelli spa of Milano. It's a product that was commonly found in Italian pharmacies. Is your bottle the second re formulation? I never thought I'd like Oud, but Montana Graphite Oud Edition is superb! The scent mixes very bright white flowers with oud, the oud being the far superior. The oud part smells like resinous honey, herbs, myrrh, and the tiniest hint of cat pee (if you try hard to find it). Glad I tried it.

      No I never made it to Studio 54 as I was on the West Coast. I did hit Studio One in Hollywood, The I-Beam, Tracadero Transfer, Dreamland, Oil Can Harry's and Pleasure Dome here in San Francisco. I will never forget entering Buzzby's that first Christmas in 75' and the entire ceiling was hug with upside-down white flocked Christmas trees all alight with thousands of tiny white lights. Rollerskating waiters dressed as elves. It was wild. I went dancing almost every night!

    Lanier - you wrote a beautiful review of Versace L' Homme on your blog a few years ago (along with The Dreamer which happens to be my all time favourite since I bought it in my early 20s around 15 years ago) so I'm a bit surprised that you quickly glossed over it in this video. Great review, Lanier! On a side note, we laid-to-rest my step-dad this afternoon. He has been with the family for the past 45-years and, unlike many funerals, our service celebrated his life so it was somewhat more festive...if that's possible. Before I headed on my road trip, I packed about a dozen or so of my heavy-hitter fragrances since I couldn't think of an appropriate funeral/wake scent. I wound-up wearing Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille (it just seems appropriate based on the morning weather) and my mom wore Arabian Oud Kalemat, which I gave to her recently.
    Anyway, this evening I got to thinking about a Top 10 Coffin Dropper (as opposed to Panty Dropper) list. (Lol) Seriously, what fragrance does one wear to a funeral that says, "I'm sad...yet grateful...but not maudlin...certainly respectful..and also sincere...confident.but not threatening" ??? I was temped to wear Comme des Garcons Avignon. Regardless, I would have definitely considered some oud/leather frags had the weather been a little cooler.

    • @laniersmith1798
      @laniersmith1798  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jim... thank you for sharing about your stepfather. I think Tobacco Vanille was a great choice. Your Mother's choice was stunning and I am sure very beautiful. My choice for a funerary fragrance would be to wear something the dearly departed wore. In my father's case that would be Old Spice.

      @laniersmith1798  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      In my book that combo is a rather classy scent. It is the Mustache Was that elevates the Speed Stick.

    Hi Lanier, to what would you compare Knize Ten? Some say it's strong. Is it like a Bel Ami, a Leather Oud or a Tuscan Leather perhaps? Just trying to place it in my rudimentary schema of fragrances.....

    Id probably want the Chanel leather but after their huge price increases along with Diors last summer I have been avoiding those two lines. Im pretty sure that Id want, enjoy and love that Chanel leather but the price increases this summer were just so huge Im avoiding their whole line for a bit in protest. And if I found something else that I might like as well or that was far cheaper it wouldn't hurt my feelings any.
    I own Midnight in Paris but believe that it has been discontinued so much like Chanel for Men, Im in a stock up and hoard mode rather than a use it mode with it. Sebastian did a recent mention of MIP on his channel but it was a comparison video between the EDT and EDP and a newer proper review by a respected reviewer is probably needed before it disappears forever. I bought a backup bottle of the EDP version and would like to buy another or two and build my inventory up to 10 ounces or so. These stupid things are probably going to be selling for $300 a bottle like Gucci Envy 2 years from now. But Im not a buy and sell on Ebay or in splits type of guy. I use what I buy.
    I own Dior Homme like it and use it but leather isn't my first impression of it. And the same is true with Thierry Muglers Pure Leather which seems to smell more like a Gourmand scent than a saddle. I like Pure Leather and its selling very much on the cheap from Fragrance Net right now and I think a bottle is under $40. But Im not sure that despite its name that its really what you would think of as a leather. Someday, I will probably own Uomo though I imagine that the leather in it is a complimenting note rather than a dominant one.
    Leather is not my favorite note but Id still like to find a good one that doesn't break the bank like Tom Fords Tuscan Leather which others rave about. Perhaps someday I will find what Im looking for but for now, I will keep buying Midnight in Paris at its hugely discounted prices until it becomes another scent memory.
    Oud is something that I really just don't like all that well. Regardless of price, I like Sandalwood better and am thankful that I do because Sandalwood is much cheaper. I own an older bottle of M7 that smells like a campfire and I just don't like it or wear it much. I guess that I must like it a little because every time I mention this fact to people that I don't like it they offer to buy it off me and I refuse to sell it. I bought Lomani intense black this summer after Sebastian did a review and said it smelled much like or as good as Creeds Royal Oud. I don't own Royal Oud but it seems ok to me. I also bought a bottle of Jovan Oud based on Sebastian Man Loves Cologne recommendation and I like it as well or maybe even more than the other Jovans in my collection. I insta bought the 4 Oud scents from Laurence Dumont the second I found out they were available in the States. Laurence Dumont is my favorite niche house and he released an Oud line to compliment the Vanilla line. Some of the Vanilla scents are getting hard to find and I do not yet own them all and I probably should have completed the Vanillas before buying the ouds. I don't have enough experience with Oud to know if these are anywhere close to the best ones. Certainly they are tamer than the M7. I like Laurence Dumont and I like these and I probably bought all 4 bottles for 1/5th the price of a one ounce Tom Ford bottle of Oud and if I owned them both and money was still not an issue, I would probably like the Dumonts better. I really like Laurence Dumont frags. I think that Im the only one besides Sebastian and the cookie one but for whatever reason call me a fan.
    One thing that I hate about oud is you either get a synthetic version of them or a staggering price tag that supports environmental disaster. I think the Jovan Oud is probably synthetic along with the Lomani. And if I had to guess then Id guess the Dumont probably is though he usually uses natural ingredients. If its Laurence Dumont, I probably don't care and am going to buy it anyway but I almost hope hes using synthetic. The Dumont seems toned down a bit and not overly smokey or campfire like as you get with the M7.
    On an environmental basis the tree where Oud is found and harvested is endangered and people chopping them down and poaching them left and right for a substance worth more than gold on a per ounce basis isn't helping matters. Most Oud is still most likely naturally found and legally produced and harvested but poaching for Oud is becoming problematic and part of the problem is our greed for it as fragrance consumers. I don't want to be one of those people that gives poachers a reason to advance extinction.
    I still like Sandalwood better and the only Ouds that Im glad that I bought were the Dumonts and I have a serious problem with being overly biased towards and in favor of my favorite niche house insomuch that Im willing to overlook their use of oud and buy their products anyway even if Id've preferred a different choice of woods such as Sandlawood, Pine or Cedar.
    Rose Oud by Laurence Dumont is special. I like the other ones also. Its probably easy to compare Dumont Rose Oud to Rose Oud by Kilian which probably costs 50X as much on a per ounce basis. I don't know which is the best and maybe someone like Lanier Smith is a better person to ask. But I like Dumont really well and the fact that it costs 1/50th as much makes it much easier for me to buy, wear, and use without wasting thought regarding its price. Without knowing for sure, Id probably guess that Dumont is synthetic oud and Kilian natural and even if Kilian Rose Oud smelled better Id buy the Dumont for environmental reasons even if the price was the same. It probably also holds its own with Jo Malones Velvet Rose and Oud and is a bit stronger though different.
    I also own Sultan by Al-Rehab which is said to be a clone of Creed Spice and Wood. All Al-Rehab frags are natural smelling because of their religious custom of avoiding alcohol in the base and this one is no exception. I haven't smelled Spice and Wood but Sultan is fabulous and well worth the price. There is a natural sandalwood version of Sultan and an Oud version. I like the Sandalwood one better.
    I own 2 fragrances based on a TV show. One is 24 gold and the other 24 platinum. They are fabulous and steals for the money if you can find them anymore. Oud versions of both have been released and though I do not like oud enough to buy them or see a reason to purchase and hope for an upgrade; someone that really loves Oud might would want to look into buying the oud versions of these fabulous fragrances. Indeed, I just looked up 24 and even the regular gold versions contain Oud along with Sandalwood and Cedar while with the Platinum version you only get Oud with the Oud version. 24 gold is a fabulous cologne for the money.
    I guess that I own more Oud than I thought that I did. I like Laurence Dumont the best but Im partial to that house. Its my favorite Niche house and I try to buy everything they produce.
    Id also recommend that you check out Sebastians videos on Jovan Oud and Lomani Intense black. Theres lots of videos about 24 gold and they are easy to find.
    I might put Perris Oud Imperiale on my try / buy list though Oud isn't my fav wood and its not a cheap frag. But Lanier Smith makes it sound great and hes usually right.
    Id like to find another leather beyond MIP but Im pretty happy with what I have in Ouds and don't think that I need to reach hard to find one. And I certainly don't feel that I need the Kilians and Tom Fords and Creeds that everyone raves about and that I probably wouldn't even like better than what I have.
    Have a great day everyone

    I tried Cuir De Lancome and found it too feminine for my tastes. As far as fragrances go it really is quite nice, but family thought it was just too womanly for a man to pull off. My wife didn't like it so I ended up giving it to one of my daughters. I suggest that any men considering this fragrance sample it before buying.
