@@noctsickversusTOBETOLD Yes and no: you can backup just the save files to a flash drive, but the system does a backup of the whole thing to a proprietary format. So you end up with a single file that you will be able to see but not read in a computer. I do not know if anyone since has developed any PC software that could read said files. So, as far as I am concerned, you will need either the old PS3 memory card adapter (to both copy to and from memory cards and backing said saves to PC), or you will need a device like this new memory card in the video above which does pretty much the same via Bluetooth.
@@Otstravait was initially if you bought the Core model that didn’t have a hard drive. You either had to buy the HDD separately or use memory cards. For the record I still have my original PS3 memcard adapter back when it was first released and only paid about $30 for it. This is phenomenal that the MCP2 can work as an adapter for the PS3 especially since I do have the BC model. As we speak I am transferring the saves from my old PS1/2 cards to the MCP2 and nice that I can have one card each for a game so I can have 8 cards of the same game under one VMC. SO awesome! I can't wait to get the MCP for my Gamecube that's next! Plus the MCP2 will also work with the X-Station for the PS1 which I also have.
I bought one before the PS three update, and I was a little sad that it would not work plugged into that adapter (bigger power draw needed), but now you don’t even need it since you plug the card in directly.
As someone who streams a lot of PS2 and PS1 games, as well as someone who impulsively makes a new save everytime I save in a JRPG, this would be really convenient for me
Ps3 is one of my favorite systems because of the backwards compatibility. Not to mention it had an excellent selection of classic games available on the Playstation store
And now that the red ring of death issue is solved it's an excellent set up along with the ps5. So u need only 2 consoles to play the whole ps library. 😊
Instead of leasing the new Ubisoft or other AAA live service titles, which are psychologically designed to milk you out of as much money as possible, get stuff like this and modernize your retro consoles. Play some indie titles, translations or romhacks. You’ll be much happier, and you’ll actually own your games.
Most overrated system of all time. Would have sold half of what it did if it wasn't for it being everyone's dvd player vs a gaming system. Glad it's finally gonna no longer be the best selling system.
What I really want to know is if there’s a way to download completed or partially completed save files from the internet and install them. Thinking of gran Turismo with millions of credits and tons of cars unlocked
With freemcboot you can drag and drop saves off of usb thumbdrives using ulaunchelf and gamefaqs usually have plenty of saves to download(i used one for ddr extreme 2 because unlocking every song is a nightmare) there are tutorials on youtube on how to build saves with pc software as well for conversion between the ps2 emulators and real consoles because authentic ps2 saves have more data because they have that 3d image built into it thats necessary on the real system. On another note you can also make the image shown when viewing the memory card saves custom. There is also the other solution. OPL has a built in cheat system that uses raw codes. You can take codes from the action replays/gameshark and convert them to their RAW format and paste it into the opl cheat folder with ulaunch elf(using the usb stick again) so for your game you could just use the credits cheat
Transferring saves from PS2 to PS3 without an adapter is a massive pain as you have to convert the save formats to the one a PS3 virtual memory card would use and some games won’t work at all and just say load failed. But since this imitates an original adapter there’s no need for any of that. That alone sells me on it
Very cool but seems unnecessarily complex. It seems like a better simpler option is to just get 2 normal memory cards that have a large capacity. If you are worried about losing saves you can just save to both in case one fails or gets corrupted. This is what I did for long games in the past on PS2. Now I can see where the PS3 functionality would be really helpful.
It’s not complex at all. It automatically creates a dedicated virtual memory card for whatever game you play, and when you play that game again it will automatically switch to it. So you literally never even have to touch it again if you don’t want to. You can also use it to launch freemcboot as well
And you don't have to use the wi-fi feature either if you don't think you'll need to; I haven't yet - it's so cool to have just one memory card for all my games! @@brotherbodhi237
Yeah my PS3 is my main system for playing my PS1 and PS2 games. I unfornately only have the model that emulates PS1 and PS2 though, so some games don't work on it like Valkyrie Profile 2 Silmeria and Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus.
I love the limitation of memory cards because you only need 2-3 of them and it’s so nostalgic and therapeutic to manage them and it forces me to finish games. Memory cards are how i keep track of what games i’ve started and motivates me to finish them🎉
I still have the memory card adapter for the ps3, luckily I got it early on. I wonder if this new memory card will work with it. Unsure because I have a several in one memory card, for ps1, that doesn't work.
the most exciting part for me when i get my hands on this memcard is to be able to seemlessly sync my save files with multiple systems and even emulators on pc
The PS3 function is cool if you have a functioning backwards compatible ps3 (for ps2 games). PS2 Classics from the store dont use virtual memory cards so this wouldn't help for that. This does help for PS1 games (store download or from disc). Just putting that out there in case someone is curious. Never liked that ps2 classics have their own saves that you can't edit on a stock ps3.
Also worth noting that a recent firmware update for the MemCardPro 2 have allowed it to sniff GameID out of real PS1/PS2 discs and ISOs on PS2. And it'll swap to the appropriate virtual memory card and you can even force to boot the MemCardPro 2 on PS2 mode upon powering it on. Not sure if that feature can be implemented on MemCardPro and MemCardPro GC.
All those high scores across the guitar hero games need to be preserved, it sucks loading up the og card and seeing those blue cubes with "corrupted data" from other games, will definitely consider this one
Back in the day, there were 3rd party memory cards for the N64 that did the same thing. Obviously, they didn't have gigs of storage, though. They had physical switches to change between the 4 separate banks.
I still have a 3 pack of ps1 memory cards in the case i bought back in the year 2000 shortly after i turned 17 for my bday. They claimed 2x the memory and then i thought that was a big deal. They are 3rd party ones but never corrupted my data. And they still work and have my saves from over 20 years ago. I remember one generic ps2 card i had erased my whole GTA vice city save. I was close to the last mission and boldly (and stupidly) never backed it up. Guess i had too much faith in the PS2 cards. When i heard PS3 didn't need a memory card anymore it was bought in my mind as soon as i had the money. Today i find it retro. I have a few ps1 games on ps5 that you can still use an emulated original memory card save menu or the newer button push with just save data menu. I prefer to use the old school save menu. Its fun to look at your old saves i dont know how many times i say now things like "when did i have THAT game? I dont remember that?" Or "why did i quit playing that game? It was so much fun?" And of course looking at save dates is fun too.
as someone who has been wanting to get a ps2 again.. this seems exactly what I'm looking for. Plan on keeping it as original as possible but still tempted to hack it and put some other ps2 games on it. this seems exactly what I'll be looking for so hopefully this becomes something worth keeping and not a crap shoot.
Most playstation 2s at this point have completely worn out lasers for the disc readers. They can be replaced with a 30 dollar part and a little bit of sautering on the slims, not too sure the application for phat models, would recommend just getting a phat model and a freemcboot memory card and adapter for an IDE hard drive and running games through OPL and only using the disc drive in games that dont run well with OPL which is pretty minimal at this point. As far as I know you can also run virtual memory cards through opl(similar to emulation) so you wouldnt really even need this special memory card in the video for it. Freemcboot is fantastic because you can obtain save data from the web and drop it on a thumbstick to be placed into a memory card on the ps2 so you could just keep a backup thumbstick for your saves. no more playing ddr for 30 hours to unlock all the songs. Also if you have a laptop or pc dont spend extra on preformatted memory cards and moddes consoles, just get a converter to plug the memory card into the pc and drop the necessary files yourself, i made the mistake of buying a 200 dollar ps2 off ebay but I guess it did come with everything I would ever need. Also get COMPONENT cables not COMPOSITE. Component has 3 different colors for video alone, composite has the yellow white and red. Quality on hd tvs is night and day
Probably the best thing that PS360Wii generation brought, after online connectivity, was eliminating memory cards. The original MCs were overpriced and third party ones were mostly unreliable.
One reason I stopped playing modern day video games is because they eventually made it impossible to save data on a flash-drive for PS3 games. You have to pay a subscription service to PSN in order to save data.
As someone that has TONS of micro-USB cables (almost all are data cables), I am really glad this is not USB-C. There are so many "Charge Only" USB-C cables out there and in my collection that I hate having to test-and-see the cable to find a data one. Not sure about others but if you are modding, I would expect you have a drawer full of usb cables of all kinds too? the USB-C generation really goofed it making it so easy to (hard) to be fooled by the different cables. Its just a pin-out that carries Data, if the USB-C cable doesnt have it, all you have is a charging cable. Buying one from amazon is nightmare.
Quite a good idea, I had one of those ps3 adaptors even with the plastic case and back in the day when ps4 came out I sold my ps3 slim and that adapter and CeX scanned it and gave me 50p it was a thing no one was bothered about and now I’ve seen them shoot up in price. Lucky I backed all my ps2 saves up first to ps3 to a sd card then to PC. This device is good though and the fact you can run it also on PS3 is a good move.
You can also use this even without a Backwards Compatible PS3. All PS3s can play PS2 games via emulation from games relased on PSN. Also if you have CFW you can just install games to the Drive.
That is the coolest device. I own a PS2 as well as a PS3 but without backwards compatibility. It still looks really awesome just to have around my apt. Shoot, you never know.
How's the compatibility? PS2 has a huge library of games and so there's games with every single memory card related bug you can think of. Games that can randomly wipe the entire card, games that randomly corrupt the card filesystem, games that aren't compatible with third party memory cards, games that freak out if your card is over 8MB and even some games that will corrupt saves on the card that are not its own.
That is certainly some very nice functionality, the ability to FTP saves over could be very cool, but if you already have FHDB and virtual memory cards on your PS2 hard drive it does feel a little unnecessary.
Yeah but one thing that you're not addressing is the fact that a lot of games on the PS2 are not compatible with memory cards that were not distributed by Sony. That's obviously an important factor to mention
Cloud saves is the big thing here. Will hopefully be able to play a ps2 game on a retroid pocket and then sync up the save and continue it on a ps2 running the same game. Its the switch experience on the ps2
That ps3 memory card adapter is that much?! Holy! I bought mine on clearance for like $4 or less…. Mind you, this would’ve been over 10 years ago My ps3 is not the backward compatible version, however, I did use the adapter anyways more so to back up saves on maybe a pc, to my surprise I was able to back up cards to the PS3 itself. As more of a pleasant surprise
Was it just me or did anyone else also have a memory card for each genre? For example, I had a memory card for my JRPGs and another for my fighting games. I used to have that Sony Memory Card Adapter but back when I sold my PS1, PS2, PS3, PSP, and PS Vita I sold them all (games, consoles, accessories). I remember selling that Memory Card Adapter for a lot of money on eBay after listing it as an auction. Anyway, something like this reminds me of the third party memory cards that had like 8 memory cards with 'pages' (I think that's what they called it). It also reminds me of the GameShark Pro I had on the PS1 that included the memory card feature that I never used because I didn't want to risk my files getting corrupted or anything like that.
The 3rd party adapters used to work fine on the ps3 till sony started blocking them. Now the official one is expensive and they never went back to allowing third party adapters
Man I like this hole concept spawn something physical with A digital twist one of the beautiful things in reference to this card is I love the sega Dreamcast cards I thought it was truly amazing to play games and if playing couch co op you didn’t have to allow your opponent to see your plays on screen referring to footballs NFL 2k I was able to play better against skilled opponents that way and the many other features the memory cards had offered so much more than most sticks built in or paid for a rather dull upgrade to be honest this will appeal to some folks
Yeah, and Sonic Shuffle, while it's a game that gets a lot of hate, is a game that's actually a lot of fun when you play with others. I was playing it with my wife a few months ago (celebrating "Dreamcast Day" on 9/9/23), and we were having a ball. When we play our cards, we have to look at our VMUs so that the other person can't steal our cards.
About PS3 compatibility, I'm having issues where the memcard pro 2 seems to restart as I enter in and out of software or the PS3's memory card utility screen after enabling ps3 mode. The restart means that I lose ps3 mode and have to unplug/replug the memcard pro again. Also, unless I'm missing something, I don't think it's possible to use the memcard pro 2 directly on your PS3. You can use it to copy saves back and forth (which I believe is the same functionality provided by the memory card adapter)
You should be able to. IIRC transferring saves is a bit more complicated then dragging and dropping a folder. You will need software like myMC, there is a article about how to use it on the PCSX2 forum. Getting old memory card files to digital should be as simple as plugin the memcard pro 2 with a sd card into your ps2, plugin old cards, copy everything, then either plug just the SD card or the memcard pro 2 with the cable to your pc and take all those files and use myMC to create a usable memory card for PCSX2/Duckstation.
All I want to know is if I need a PC at all for it. I heard you need to use a PC to format the SD card for it, as well as manage the virtual memory cards. That all seems unnecessarily complicated(not that I couldn’t figure it out, I’m just lazy and would rather not need a PC). All I’m looking for is a high capacity memory card that I can just slot in like the old memory cards. I don’t need all that other stuff.
This may be a silly question, but I'm gonna ask anyways since there's a difference between harddrive space for software and save files. In addition to replacing the adaptor for ps3, does it also act as an expansion for space on the hard drive? I remember the BC PS3s only having 60GB of memory. I know they have mods for this now, but I'd like to avoid that if possible.
My backwards compatible PS3 is cookin these days. Is thermal paste the only solution? I tried a new fan and swapped out the power block for the one you recommended awhile back (I forget what it was called). Im afraid to turn it on cause after a few minutes it sounds like a hair dryer is in there, its crazy.
Thermal paste won't be enough. There are 2 solutions: 1. Delid + CFW (to adjust fan speed). 2. Do the "Frankeinstein" install. Swap your 90nm RSX chip with one from a Slim (40nm). Even then, there is no guarantee it will save your console but it's the most you can do for the old Phats. Mine got a red light of the death even though it was delid. You're better off just getting a Slim with CFW support, rip your PS2 discs onto the hard drive and play them from there. Compatibility is very high nowadays and games that still don't work have affordable remasters like the Ratchet & Clank trilogy.
@@Manic_Panic I knew the day would come when it would red light and I did get a back up slim just before they went out of stock. I'll have to look into everything you mentioned. Thanks
This thing is pretty bad ass, now if they make it so you can hook that memory card up to your ps2 and then download a rom file right to it from your computer, no formatting, no syncing, no cords, I would instantly buy that shit.
What I really loved to know is if you could use this neat little trinket via pc on an emulator? Because I have no means to play imported games on my PS2 or sometimes I just would use it to play my other games too because the enhanced visuals (because you can play the discs directly) and this way I could still store my savegames on an actual memory card what would really be awesome! If you can please let me know!
That's a really awesome device from my point of view, can you copy from one memory card to the other though? But it's still handy 3 generations of saved files in one memory card is awesome to have.
I recently found a Katana card for PS2 that holds four 8Mb cards on one, but needs to switch between the four. Not nearly as cool as this, but a era-accurate solution for my PS2
Well shit, I literally just bought an official clear green ps1 card and one of the high cap black official gc cards on a whim yesterday, since it's always good to have more memory cards... the money would have been better spent on this but it's still nice to have those in the collection. I've been paranoid about card failure ever since my official ps2 card corrupted the day after I finally 100% completed Kingdom Hearts all those years ago. That by itself was bad enough, but obviously I also lost all the rest of the hard earned save files on there. Never did play another KH game after that though... I've done a fair bit of save file wrangling over the years. It started with the DexDrive for ps1, and my Gameshark Pro with the built in virtual memory cards. Later I got one of those official ps3 memory card readers as well. I thankfully have backups on hard drives of all my ps1 era stuff anyway, haven't experimented backing up the ps2 cards yet. I even converted them over to psp & now Vita, lemme tell you it's nice not having to start over on different hardware.
Couldn't you use Free McBoot and transfer a PS2 save game to a flash drive, and the transfer the flash drive to your PS3, and then transfer the save? It's roundabout, but you weren't restricted to the PS2 memory card adapter.

Obviously you won’t be able to use PS2 saves on non-b/c PS3 since you won’t be able to run the games, however PS1 saves will work just fine since all PS3 models were b/c to PS1 be it the phat, Slim, or Super Slim.
@@MegaRayland in fact I have crash bash saved in my ps3 super slim and I want to copy a save of tenkaichi 3 that I putted on ps3 to a memory card ps2, is it possible with this gear?
@@MegaRayland the only real sony memory card converter for ps3 it's rare and expensive now.. can u tell me If I can recover my saves(ps2,ps1) from ps3 to then copy it in a ps2 memory card ? Is it possible?
@@noctsickversusTOBETOLD Yes and no: you can backup just the save files to a flash drive, but the system does a backup of the whole thing to a proprietary format. So you end up with a single file that you will be able to see but not read in a computer. I do not know if anyone since has developed any PC software that could read said files.
So, as far as I am concerned, you will need either the old PS3 memory card adapter (to both copy to and from memory cards and backing said saves to PC), or you will need a device like this new memory card in the video above which does pretty much the same via Bluetooth.
Grabbed mine when preorders went live. Its amazing.
PS2 was the first console I modded with the modded memcard and replaced the fan and used an SSD. I did that before modding the 3ds and vita.
Modded memory cards have been a thing for 14+ years the first iteration was magic swap if im not mistaken
Swap Magic was a swap disc, used for booting backups. It was also used to help set up FCMB on unmodded PS2s though.
Kinda weird to think that the ps2 and gc were the last of the mem card dependent consoles
Have you ever played Metal Gear Solid 4? When I played that game for the first time, I had the same realization as you.
Xbox 360 had memory cards albeit not dependent.
Xbox has memory cards.
PS Vita OLED?
@@Otstravait was initially if you bought the Core model that didn’t have a hard drive. You either had to buy the HDD separately or use memory cards. Eventually all 360’s included some kind of storage, be it flash or HDD. They also added the ability to use USB drives as save game storage in a later firmware update
These things are awesome. It makes getting your BIOS off your console and onto your PC for emulator's so easy.
Being able to skip the adapter is very nice. I still have mine somewhere, but not having to depend on it is very good.
It seems like the Memorycard has a better CPU than the PS2. :D
I bought one before the PS three update, and I was a little sad that it would not work plugged into that adapter (bigger power draw needed), but now you don’t even need it since you plug the card in directly.
As someone who streams a lot of PS2 and PS1 games, as well as someone who impulsively makes a new save everytime I save in a JRPG, this would be really convenient for me
I had the blue one that plugs into the parallel port on the back of the psx, that thing was awesome
I've been waiting for them to restock.
I'm waiting too.
They are up for pre-order now.
Restocked!
Ps3 is one of my favorite systems because of the backwards compatibility. Not to mention it had an excellent selection of classic games available on the Playstation store

Instead of leasing the new Ubisoft or other AAA live service titles, which are psychologically designed to milk you out of as much money as possible, get stuff like this and modernize your retro consoles. Play some indie titles, translations or romhacks. You’ll be much happier, and you’ll actually own your games.
ps2 is the best
Most overrated system of all time. Would have sold half of what it did if it wasn't for it being everyone's dvd player vs a gaming system. Glad it's finally gonna no longer be the best selling system.

I forgot about memory cards. Almost like a flip phone and weekend minutes.
This plus freehdboot sounds awesome!
Exactly. Running HDBoot now and am thinking this is the icing.
Definitely can games facts hassave files
Transferring saves from PS2 to PS3 without an adapter is a massive pain as you have to convert the save formats to the one a PS3 virtual memory card would use and some games won’t work at all and just say load failed. But since this imitates an original adapter there’s no need for any of that. That alone sells me on it
I was thinking the same thing!
Mine just came in the mail today, I ordered one after watching Tito's review from Macho Nacho Productions.
Same and same.
I love the limitation of memory cards because you only need 2-3 of them and it’s so nostalgic and therapeutic to manage them and it forces me to finish games.
Memory cards are how i keep track of what games i’ve started and motivates me to finish them🎉
It's funny how this little memory card has an OLED screen, yet the Switch 2 will not! XD
I still have the memory card adapter for the ps3, luckily I got it early on. I wonder if this new memory card will work with it. Unsure because I have a several in one memory card, for ps1, that doesn't work.
Could you imagine this was available back in the ps2 days. How different would the world have turned out like.
Sony would’ve killed it immediately
no, just no
It would be useless because MicroSD cards weren't around for 90 percent of the PS2's life.
the most exciting part for me when i get my hands on this memcard is to be able to seemlessly sync my save files with multiple systems and even emulators on pc
PlayStation 2 superiority RAHHHHH
I invented RAHHHH not you
The PS3 function is cool if you have a functioning backwards compatible ps3 (for ps2 games).
Not all games tho
Does it run DOOM ?
"Stand back! there's a hurricane coming through!"
That ps3 (original) mc adapter is really awesome. Works like a charm ✨ but this new mc looks like a good alternative
I love that all the needs grew up in the 90s :)
I definitely need this, especially for me playing plenty of sports games and for future use in games such as Tekken and MK Shaolin Monks
@1:44 Damn, OLED on a memory card. New Steam Deck competition.
I ordered mine about a week ago and I can’t wait for it to come in the mail!
I like the Monkey Island desktop background!
Theres a part of me that's somewhat nostalgic for this era of gaming, but then the PTSD kicks in and I realize I'm good.
That is certainly some very nice functionality, the ability to FTP saves over could be very cool, but if you already have FHDB and virtual memory cards on your PS2 hard drive it does feel a little unnecessary.
Love how you're casually throwing shade at some random games :D
Might get this just to save the hassle of shuffling through all my memory cards whenever I hook up the PS2 again that's just in a box in a spare room.
Yeah but one thing that you're not addressing is the fact that a lot of games on the PS2 are not compatible with memory cards that were not distributed by Sony. That's obviously an important factor to mention
These MemoryCard-Emulators try to emulate SONY MCs as accurate as possible…!
Mind you, this would’ve been over 10 years ago
My ps3 is not the backward compatible version, however, I did use the adapter anyways more so to back up saves on maybe a pc, to my surprise I was able to back up cards to the PS3 itself. As more of a pleasant surprise
Where'd you find that... I've looked everywhere and they're sold out on every website ive gone to

Yes my dude! I had always had one titled "Shooting" one titled "Racing" and one that had all the crap that didn't fit on the others
I can't believe someone managed to allow ps2 BC on a ps3 slim and superslim by bashing it with a hammer. It does change everything.
?
a lot of electronics change drastically after being bashed with a hammer
Not just backward-compatibility PS3, it can do on jailbreak PS3 to play backup PS2. But it's still a useful transfer PS1 and PS2 saves without adapter
This is something I've been looking for finally someone did it
Can you use this to digitize a save from a physical Memory Card. I would love to get my old saves from my original hardware onto my Steamdeck
I know they have mods for this now, but I'd like to avoid that if possible.
seems like a great way for me to import game saves off websites and put it on there for certain games I don't feel like putting a lot of time into
Nobody on the earth needs a PS2 Memory card this powerful.
So everyone should have one
My backwards compatible PS3 is cookin these days. Is thermal paste the only solution? I tried a new fan and swapped out the power block for the one you recommended awhile back (I forget what it was called). Im afraid to turn it on cause after a few minutes it sounds like a hair dryer is in there, its crazy.
Thermal paste won't be enough. There are 2 solutions:

I feel like I'm the only weirdo who taped and wrote on memory cards or bought different colors to know what's on them.
Actually everyone does that 😅
That's a really awesome device from my point of view, can you copy from one memory card to the other though? But it's still handy 3 generations of saved files in one memory card is awesome to have.
Very nice!

I recently found a Katana card for PS2 that holds four 8Mb cards on one, but needs to switch between the four. Not nearly as cool as this, but a era-accurate solution for my PS2
If only did can load roms off this then it would be awesome
Losing your saving files is part of the vibe of the ps2 😅
Impressive. I have an old card reader that uses a com port. I never knew there was an adapter for the ps3
Couldn't you use Free McBoot and transfer a PS2 save game to a flash drive, and the transfer the flash drive to your PS3, and then transfer the save? It's roundabout, but you weren't restricted to the PS2 memory card adapter.
Pretty neat...🤘🏼💯✔️
