I’ve got fully on-board with the MemCard Pros. They are absolutely the best new product for any retro console in ages. Once they’re all set up, you don’t even need to think about memory cards ever again. They have dropped some very heavy hints that they’re working on a Dreamcast version. I’ll be there day one for that thing.
Everyone, Be sure to leave a few ghosts in racing games saves and a few unfinished rpg files that you started with your kids. Then extract those saves, leave haunted messages from yourself in the game and inject those modified saves. If you’re lucky you can still impart trauma to your children from the grave.
One thing that needs to be covered is for games like Metal Gear Solid, where Psycho Mantis reads your memory card and mentions Symphony of the Night, and other Konami games. Someone might want to copy over saves from those other Konami games onto their virtual memory card for MGS. A tutorial on that would be good! :) In any case, great video!
You can also select which VMC is currently mounted using the web ui. So with your console on, mount the Metal Gear VMC using your PC or tablet. Then back on your console, using the system mem card browser (or X-Station version), transfer the SoTN save from a second memory card onto the Mem Card Pro.
What a funny coincidence! I just finished playing Tomba! on my Toshiba 27AF42 CRT TV to watch this video, and then the first thing I see is Coury running Tomba! on his Toshiba CRT TV in the background. Hahaha!
I got a MemCard Pro 2 recently, and while I had problems with my old PS1 saves still working after transferring from PS1 card to MCP2 to PS3 (it's entirely possible that they've all since become corrupt, sadly), my PS2 saves seem to work just fine on my PS2 after transferring them over from PS2 card to MCP2, though I decided to keep it simple & just have one virtual card for my North American games & another VC for my import games. A very cool device, regardless.
The MemCard products are just about the coolest part of my retro setup since they came along. I've bought every single iteration and can't imagine buying the next one they make. Perhaps an Xbox one? I can dream.
I got a MemCard Pro for my original PS1 & besides the disc drive freezing when it gets too warm, it’s made my experience with my PS1 a lot better than using an oem PS1 memory card
Great video as always. I've been looking at aftermarket memory cards to keep some saves safe. Also, love the TimeSplitters 2 in the background! Shame that Embracer killed off Free Radical.
I was dissapointed on memcard pro ps1.. It was supposed to be "last memcard i need" but im having trouble with my eu 5502 ps1 modded with xstation and trying to save die hard trilogy usa, the saving doesnt work correctly and i cant load the saves. Original card works fine. Wonder how many other games there are that are not compatible.
Thanks for the reminder, I've been meaning to pick up one of the PS1 versions for a while now. I'm juggling something like a dozen memory cards right now and I'd like to get away from doing that. 😅
Currently using the MemCard Pro 2 with my PS2+OPL and MemCard Pro with my PS1+xStation. I'm absolutely loving these cards. Need to get one for my GC as well.
Memcard Pro + Xstation, Memcard Pro 2 + OPL (and xstation if you prefer or don't have a Memcard Pro), and Memcard Pro GC + Swiss are perfect combinations. Well worth the time to transfer all my saves from my stacks of memory cards to game-specific virtual memcards on each device. I hope they do one for the Dreamcast sometime in the future! The VM2 is still a bit too expensive and a bit too hard to buy for my taste at the moment, and that market could use a little competition.
Awesome video, Coury. I'm loving my MemCard Pro and MemCard Pro GC. MemCard Pro was a life saver for me. I use mine to play my favorite games. I wish there was a Nintendo Switch variant but with local back up into the micro SD card instead of virtual memory card. That would be awesome. Especially for games that don't support cloud save back up.
Got them all, MemcardPro the GC card and last year the MC PRo 2. Very nive piece of hardware. It's amazing what the modding community do with retro hardware and new tech.
The weird thing about coveted childhood saves is, despite cherishing them and even mourning their loss, they’re largely useless. Don’t get me wrong - I have a memcard pro 2 as well and spent a solid day meticulously backing up all my old saves with the same reverence you describe. But… I know I’ll never use them 😅. Most of them represent a significant amount of skill building and learning the specifics of each game; it would be almost impossible to jump back into these saves, remember what quests or items or whatever were next in your list, or the secrets or even how to use some of your inventory lol. I tried with fallout 3 and laughed my but off haha. The pro2 is an incredible device. And it lets my OCD work at full speed. But I also know I’m preserving fossils :p
I got all 3 MemCards pro's thus far and love them all! My favorite feature of the GC one in particular is being able to toggle between NTSC-U and NTSC-J games without and hassle. I was always terrified on accidentally loading a Japanese game while I had an American memory card inside and having my entire card formatted. Thanks to Swiss and auto changing I can go between the two region of games and never worry about switching them around or anything getting deleted. My only gripe with the MemCard Pro 2 is the card not automatically resetting to the FreeMcBoot card after soft resetting from OPL. A lot of the time I have to do it manually through the app and it is inconvenient, but I hope this can be added in the future. Thanks again for the informative video and also letting me know about the Enhanced UI pages!
I have a memcard pro 1 and 2 in my ps1 and 2. I had no idea they updated the hardware of the card 1 to not need an FPGA. I have one of the first ones released. These are all so awesome. I was able to get my saves off my ps3 and then use them on original console hardware or pull saves from pcsx2 or duckstation as well.
Was there a collective memory wipe of how OPL has supported VMCs stored on HDD for years? PS2 OPL users have solved this problem for a long time now. Also wLaunchELF makes it trivial to backup and manage PS2 and PS1 saves to external media. The case for these MemCard-type solutions for PS1 console users is stronger though.
Oh my God, the per game save file on PS2 not working with discs is the reason I never wanted to pick this up. The fact it does work now means I have a reason to get it! This is amazing!
I cant get mime to work right with Doomgroomers opl. I have to back out some times for games to show up and reinsert the mempro2 and pick the channel for the card to be detected on the game.
Only Downsides i've found to the Memcard Pro is it doesn't function with the Action Replay back attachment on PS1 and the RetroFighters Defender controller's Dongle is too tight to the point the Receiver doesn't fit all the way through.
I have a Memcard Pro for my PS1 and I love it! There's a few things worth noting however. First of all, as of right now it's not possible to "link" multiple game IDs to a single virtual memory card. If you're wondering why on earth anyone would want to do this, Suikoden's the reason. It's a game that'll require that extra step of manually copying over the save file from Suikoden 1 to a spare extra card, then back into the Suikoden 2 card to properly import the save data, and that step will need to be repeated each time the user updates their old save and wants to do so. It's a minor inconvenience, admittedly, but one I hope can be remedied in a future update. (There's also things like Metal Gear Solid's "mind reading" segment, though it's easy enough to do a one time copy of a bunch of quickly made "dummy" save files to get that feature working every time.) One other factor to keep in mind is power consumption. The Memcard Pro takes up enough power that it won't boot up properly when plugged into a PS1 multitap, or certain "slim" models of the PS2 for that matter. The remedy was added later on, but it involves disabling a feature. Simply put, you need to turn off the wifi completely, and then it'll boot up just fine in a lower power mode. There's not any getting around this, because a strong wifi signal requires a certain power minimum that you just can't get around, but I do wish there was a physical switch to turn the wifi on and off before the device even boots, allowing easy access to the best of both worlds.
Great video! I’m glad to see there are some tools to make the process of moving your old saves onto the MemCardPros. Would like to see FW updates where it only checka for the relevant first part of a folder name when checking Game ID so we can keep the game names on the folders. And I hope the VM2 gets ODE/GameID support soon☺️
I lost all my PS2 saves a while ago. I had a 128MB card with a switch on it to swap between a second 128MB part of the card. I had assumed that the switch physically disconnected the second half of the card and went to format half the card and keep the side with my saves. Well the format failed and permanently corrupted my card and when I went to check the other side it was also bricked.
THIS ^^^^^^^ I searched everywhere for months and I couldn't find anything. I'm playing all my GCB games on a jailbroken Wii so of course the Memcard Pro for GCB would be a hit, or am I missing something?
I bought the PS2 and GC ones and after watching this video realized that I haven't even scratched the surface of how these work. It's not bad just on default at the moment though.
I care about save files too, but another thing that I really care about is play time. I wish Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft would add that feature to your account id's like on Steam. Very glad most emulators have that as well.
Honestly I'm kind of disappointed at how overly complicated these things seem. I'm coming away from this video not actually sure what I'd be getting. All I want is a single memory card I can use for everything per console. I don't want to cycle through like 8 cards per game. I don't care how it's organized on the card, I just want to plug it in and have it work. I'm not trying to be negative, but I didn't really know what was going on in this video. As a constructive suggestion, it might be helpful to ELI5.
[coury] funny that I had to look up what “ELI5” meant. So if you want to plug it in and have it just work, you can absolutely do that. It will generate a generic “memory card 1” and you can roll with that til the virtual memory card is full. Then you’ll need to either switch channels on the card or generate a new card. I f you don’t want to do any of that, and just want to plug it in and have it work and just deal with the 1 card and 1 channel, then you’re probably better off just getting a stand alone original memory card because this would be way overkill for what you want to do.
@@mylifeingaming thank you very much for the detailed response. It sounds like if I'm only cycling through individual memory cards at the global level, it would be pretty simple. I guess everybody else might know more about PS2 modding with the mcboot stuff. I bought a modded PS2 that already had everything set up because I couldn't make sense of how all that stuff worked haha. Maybe I'm the problem? Have a good night!
@@SeveredLegs It's really the limitation of the consoles at the end of the day. You can only have so much space on one memory card that's recognized by the console. But it's really easy to switch to another virtual memory card on these.
Wow. Sounds great. I have had 2 memory cards become corrupt. One just doesnt read anymore. The other had a corrupt save file from LEGO Batman. Then everything was erased, but it works. What happens when a save is corrupt on the memcard pro 2?
But how do you set up the Google Drive Backup? In the WebUI I only have the option to enable cloud backups, but how or where do I set it up so that it knows what google account to use?
you just don't ever do that. you want the gameid thing running OR you use your cellphone/webinterface to switch the card. I hate those little clicky buttons
I've been using these for a good while now but cannot figure out how to get my Sonic Adventure 2 Battle chao garden save to actually load after transferring it to the Memcard Pro GC. Every time I load the garden it says the save needs to be deleted and I have to start the entire garden from scratch. I saw you had a save for one in your video. Does yours work after copying or did you have to do some kind of workaround?
I've had the MemCard Pro 1 for over a year and it's great. Call me weird, but I like to divide my saves by publisher. So I have VMCs specifically for Capcom, Konami, Square, etc.
I remember in a live stream you mentioned ever the mem card pro interfering with some other 3rd party products (probably a wireless dongle). So why didn't you include that in your review (or overview), since that's an issue your audience in particular is likely to face?
[Coury] That was an issue with the 4x memory card from Katana. It skipped to bank 3 on system boot when you had one of the new Brooke wireless controller dongles connected.
So stupid question. I know both the Memcard Pro’s generate multiple memory card slots on the SD Card. My question is weather or not you have to choose the same virtual memory card slot that your game is on before loading that game. Or does it search for your game automatically through all the virtual memory cards until it finds it? I am thinking of getting one and I just wanted to know.
I already have the MemCard Pro 1, but I'd be happy to spring for the 2 (if only for the PS2) and GC (I only wish the GC would return to stock). Speaking of the MCP GC, I was thinking, if you launched Swiss using a save hack from a memory card, then is there any harm in swapping the hacked memory card with the MCP GC before you swap discs or simply play another GameCube rom? I say that because I don't have an Action Replay disc (which is pretty pricey on eBay now) nor do I feel like hard-modding my GameCube.
Hey, maybe you guys can answer this one; What method of save file transfer preserves the original timestamps and other metadata? I want to back up the contents of my original PS2 memcards, and two out of three are chock full of my late father's Gran Turismo saves and stuff, so I'd like to make as perfect a backup of those as possible, timestamps and all. TIA. 😢
Could someone please send me a save file with the first stage beaten for Rogue Squadron 2 on gamecube? I suck and cannot beat the firstt stage with trench, and it takes like 15 minutes per attempt driving me nuts
Its a memory card with lots of space that can also be used to launch FreeMCBoot to then run OPL. It doesn't come with FreeMCBoot on the card by default. You must download and drag and drop it onto the sd card then set it to default to FreeMCBoot on start up.
While I'm not in the market for any of these devices, as I'm satisfied with emulation for everything up to the PS2/GC/PSP era. I still think these devices are very cool and wonderful for those who want to play using real hardware!
Is it possible to install both FreePSXBoot and Freemcbook on the same memory card pro 2 in order to boot as a PS1 memory card when plugged into a PSOne and boot as a PS2 MC when plugged into PS2 ?
Kinda, the Memcard Pro 2 always boots in PS2 Mode unless a PS1 Memcard is Set as the default card. Essentially you can have one of the Systems boot automatically into the Softmod, and with the other you have to manually mount the VMC with the Softmod and maybe reset the console (though if I get the Video right just mounting and then entering the Memory Card Menu on the PS1 should do the trick there)
Can i use this without the app? I want a long term solution and if its dependant on an app im skeptical i can use it in 25 years like i could a normal mem card
Ngl I've had a memcard pro gc since it launched, but I actually have no idea how to actually use it and all this info just goes over my head every time I watch the video. Am I beyond saving?
I luckily don’t care about my save files. I rarely play a game a second time and if I do, I just start anew. But I understand if it’s important to people and it’s good if there are ways to keep those save files.
Yeah those guys in the ps2 scene are the ones that came up with the method of scraping the game history for the game id which led to disc based "per game" (as coury puts it) saves. Such cool dudes that they shared it with others like 8bitmods for use on the MCP2. You don't even need those game id specific versions of OPL anyway. Normal OPL works with this method for per game saves. Some credit should go to BBsan2k for implementing this first on the SD2PSX.
Wondering if it's possible add my PSP PSOne save files into the MemCard Pro. Probably even possible to burn the PSP iso onto a disc and use FreePSXBoot to play it on the original hardware.
@@mylifeingaming Since moving to Taiwan and I guess because of its humidity I haven't had a PS2 controller with a full set of working buttons for like ten years. I have a bunch of them in various states of disassembly. My DS Lite too. The buttons just do not want to work all at once no matter how many replacement parts I buy. For whatever reason my PC gamepads are fine, so I'm always on PCSX2 for PS2 these days. I use a Dualshock 4 which seems to remain functional, and a couple 8BitDos, mainly.
its ok, Mario 64 all stars means everything to me why i thought as a child saving it to A and B and then later in life understanding they will be lost to a dead battery I am like lol I'm stuffed..
[Try4ce] Super Mario 64 doesn't use a battery, it has eeprom, so the saves shouldn't die off so easily. Many N64 and GBA games use eeprom or flash instead of batteries (but some games for both systems do use batteries).

you just don't ever do that. you want the gameid thing running OR you use your cellphone/webinterface to switch the card. I hate those little clicky buttons
Thank you. I'm getting a MemCard2 next month! 🧑🏻
Ok so cloud backups, what about cloud syncing for people using multiple PS2s w/ multiple MemCardPro2s?
What is the wireless controller adapter MLiG is using with the PS2 there?
Brook wingman
I already have the MemCard Pro 1, but I'd be happy to spring for the 2 (if only for the PS2) and GC (I only wish the GC would return to stock).
Speaking of the MCP GC, I was thinking, if you launched Swiss using a save hack from a memory card, then is there any harm in swapping the hacked memory card with the MCP GC before you swap discs or simply play another GameCube rom? I say that because I don't have an Action Replay disc (which is pretty pricey on eBay now) nor do I feel like hard-modding my GameCube.
Oooh, you've kinda sold me on the Memcard 2. And they're not too pricey it seems. Might have to grab one.
Considering the amount of PS2 games and how big the saves can get at times, HIGHLY recommended. If you could only get one, get the 2.
TIA. 😢
Man, so much I didn't know in this vid. I'm just glad back in the early days of the PS3 I actually paid the $30 for the memory card reader!
Excellent video as always, guys! I really gotta get a MemCard Pro 2 for sure!
I'm sure you know this Coury, but you can't copy PS1 data using the PS2, you can however use the file manager in FMCB to copy w/e you want.
Could someone please send me a save file with the first stage beaten for Rogue Squadron 2 on gamecube? I suck and cannot beat the firstt stage with trench, and it takes like 15 minutes per attempt driving me nuts
Good times for PSX specifically memcard pro and PSIO as of yesterday.
Will this play backup games via OPL and free mcboot or this is a memory card with lots of space and nothing more?
Its a memory card with lots of space that can also be used to launch FreeMCBoot to then run OPL.
It doesn't come with FreeMCBoot on the card by default. You must download and drag and drop it onto the sd card then set it to default to FreeMCBoot on start up.
@@ians_parks Cool thanks for helping me out!
I'd love one for a ps2, but they're not shipping until q3 or something like that last I checked.
Is there a way to do per game saves on the memcard pro when using a PSIO?
While I'm not in the market for any of these devices, as I'm satisfied with emulation for everything up to the PS2/GC/PSP era. I still think these devices are very cool and wonderful for those who want to play using real hardware!
I can’t believe it, Kendrick dropped and MLIG upload in one day? Incredible.
Ordered both the GC and Pro 2 exactly 2 months ago. Still waiting on them as they stated they wouldnt be ready until "3rd Quarter 2024" :(
Is it possible to install both FreePSXBoot and Freemcbook on the same memory card pro 2 in order to boot as a PS1 memory card when plugged into a PSOne and boot as a PS2 MC when plugged into PS2 ?
Kinda, the Memcard Pro 2 always boots in PS2 Mode unless a PS1 Memcard is Set as the default card. Essentially you can have one of the Systems boot automatically into the Softmod, and with the other you have to manually mount the VMC with the Softmod and maybe reset the console (though if I get the Video right just mounting and then entering the Memory Card Menu on the PS1 should do the trick there)
I want the ps1 and gc versions but they are sold out 😢
Correction: you don't need a forked version of OPL anymore. You need to use the "latest" version - aka the development version.
Can i use this without the app? I want a long term solution and if its dependant on an app im skeptical i can use it in 25 years like i could a normal mem card
Can the Memcard Pro 2 be used to load ISOs like the MXSIO?
Ngl I've had a memcard pro gc since it launched, but I actually have no idea how to actually use it and all this info just goes over my head every time I watch the video. Am I beyond saving?
Maybe i missed it. Does the card work om a ps2 slim model machine?
It does
gotta say, a memcard having a wifi AP built in is kinda crazy lol
I bought one of the for
gamecube I am having a hard time trying to use it I put the correct files on sd card it on fat32 What am I doing Wrong
Was the MemCard Pro for the NGC always $70 or the price just shot up?
They were €55 during the initial preorder from 8BitMods.
Any idea how to back-up SNES saves?
take it from someone with experience, don't trust your PS2 memory card not to fail, it will sooner or later. back those saves up while you can!
I luckily don’t care about my save files.
I rarely play a game a second time and if I do, I just start anew.
But I understand if it’s important to people and it’s good if there are ways to keep those save files.
Note about the GameCube: You can boot Swiss without a disc. Install a Picoboot mod and away you go
Thanks for this Coury. Hope you're doing well! :)
Hello, you are overdue for a tour of your setups. Thank you.
You don't miss! Right on time just like you said
Another fantastic video. Thank you so much for your hard work.
This is really awesome stuff 💪thx for sharing
What game is that at 12:55?
Suikoden (PS1)
what is the game at 10:40?
Adventures of Little Ralph
@@mylifeingaming Thank you!! :)
I have to get the pro 2 but have the other two already and love them.
Freakinf love my memcard pro for ps1 and will eventually get one for gc and ps2
No mention on the open source SD2PSX. :(
Yeah those guys in the ps2 scene are the ones that came up with the method of scraping the game history for the game id which led to disc based "per game" (as coury puts it) saves.
Dammit Coury, you’ve sold me!
I can use freePSXboot on MemCard PRO 2?
I think it's "free em see boot" not McBoot as in McDonald's. MC seems to mean "memory card".
[Try4ce] That makes sense, but Free McBoot is undeniably more fun to say.
They knew what they were doing when they named it that...
its ok, Mario 64 all stars means everything to me why i thought as a child saving it to A and B and then later in life understanding they will be lost to a dead battery I am like lol I'm stuffed..
[Try4ce] Super Mario 64 doesn't use a battery, it has eeprom, so the saves shouldn't die off so easily. Many N64 and GBA games use eeprom or flash instead of batteries (but some games for both systems do use batteries).
@@mylifeingaming Ah sweet eeprom for the win haha
I need this for my PS1/2 games
I would love to own one on NGC given my trauma of losing hard-earned saves for 100+ hour RPGs on that system. Too bad they seem to be sold out!
I want a way to backup PS5 saves without the cloud..
[Coury] me too… although not preferable, honestly at this point I’d pay Sony 20 a year for cloud saves without having to shell out for ps+.
