    This all makes perfect sense, except the force. Shawn dumps the deck into Penn's hands, he pulls out the advertising cards and the one joker. He then has Penn fan them out in new deck order ( the 7D is in there in its usual place). He then has Penn shuffle the deck himself a few times. He then puts them into Shawn's hand and Shawn appears to simply square the deck and then spread the cards for Penn to choose.
    Unless there's an edit, or Shawn has palmed a 7D and has planted it in the deck after getting it back from Penn, I don't know how or when he would have located the 7D after Penn's shuffle in order to force the card. It makes perfect sense that it's a force given the rest of the trick, but unless there's an edit, I don't see where it happens.

      When I considered this trick back then I was thinking maybe a stripper deck (we already know we can swap the cards so why not put what's mostly a stripper deck with an easy to find 7D?)
      It also seems there was a bit of a video cut, although I would assume not too long - maybe the time it would take him to find the card in a gimmicked deck?

    Fantastic video! One thing I noticed. You load the advertisement cards and one joker into your pocket at the start of the trick and then load the gimmick joker into that pocket after the deck switch. Both "Jokers" should be in that right side pocket.
    So when constructing your gimmick at 14:06 you shouldn't put the remaining joker in the deck because it should "already be in your pocket". Instead that joker should be pre loaded in your right pocket before the start of the trick so you can verify both jokers and advertisements at the end while leaving the gimmicked joker safe in your pocket.

    You gotta have a lot of balls to do a deck switch in front of Pen and Teller and they would be looking for that when you reach in for the Pen. But it is amazing how people focus on what they’re supposed to focus on or not what they could have focussed on, which would’ve been him pulling that deck of cards out of his pocket

  • @johnpretino2644

    Nice explanation, but you don't want to bend the bottom flap behind the 8 of diamonds (as you say in your video) because that will cause you to slide the forced 7 of diamonds to go between the 8 and 9 instead of the 6 and 8. You want to fold the flap in front of the 8 (so it's below the 8 and above the 6.) You should have up jogged the 6 of diamonds (instead of the 8) and folded the flap behind the 6. Thanks for the detailed video!

      Yeah I saw that cos when Shawn said what about the top is it sealed he said yep then when he asked is the bottom sealed penn went ehhhh ahhh like he’d seen something but didn’t want to say. Surely that should have been a giveaway and the fact Shawn had the gimmick card flap sticking out earlier in the trick and no one spotted him push it back down with his finger. I’d say they’re pretty easy to fool tbh

  • @ten8468
    @ten8468 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Ah I had tried doing that trick some 5 years ago but I was missing the front flap and proper glue so that the back would easily open but properly close... But my box back was even better than yours : you can actually use the side flaps to build a sheath that controls the vertical position of the card entirely! (So it's easier to control that it goes exactly at the correct position) So much investment in building the gimmick and two packets opened for an epic fail 😅
    From that I keep my practice of the deck switch that I got from a class taught by Shawn where he explains how he "learnt his lesson" about performing a deck switch in front of somebody as tall as Penn 😅
    I still use that deck switch regularly for other tricks 😊
    Maybe with the front flap, proper glue and OMG the second switch of course 😂 I'll find the motivation to attempt it again 😊
    Thanks!

    Excellant tutorial. Very impressive.
    I have used this idea for years now, BUT, without the gimmick or deck switch. These two subtleies make all the difference.
    Unfortunately for me, i had never thought of this.
    My performance was simply to have the force card already in the prepped deck and have this deck in plain sight all the time (card was not signed). Palm out the forced card, hand out the deck to show card is gone, then have spectator open sealed deck to find their card inside.
    Much more convincing with this method.
    Thank you so much for sharing.

  • @Yupppi
    @Yupppi 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    I feel like I'm too stupid when I couldn't follow what the spectator was supposed to think in the original trick. I do understand that you pull back and forth deck switches, but somehow the missing advertising cards that are with another pack that is not in play are supposed to prove that the pack you pulled that isn't perfect was in fact untouched. Somehow the deck switches shown just make me more confused about what you were supposed to believe.

    • @SFO_Dragonman
      @SFO_Dragonman 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      For a regular audience you would only do one deck switch. You switch the real brand new box of cards with the gimmicked box, allowing you to slide their signed card in and seal it up. The trick would end when you reveal that their signed card is miraculously inside a “sealed” box of cards. The audience would never know that you used the gimmicked box with the flap.
      Penn and Teller though, are not a normal audience. They are likely to want to inspect your cards/props after the trick. The second switch was to get rid of the gimmick box, so he could hand over the perfectly normal box to Penn for him to take back to his chair and examine. He used the advertising cards being in his pocket as an excuse to go back into his pocket and disguise that second switch.
      Penn and teller saw him do the first switch from real box to gimmick box, they didn’t catch the second one where he switched them back.
      As a result, they had no idea about the gimmicked box and had no chance to inspect it because he’d taken it out of play right under their noses.
      So they knew he’d switched decks during the trick, but because of the second switch, they could not figure out how that would allow him to put a signed card into a sealed box.

However unless they cut out the part where Shawn looked at the deck to located the 7 of diamonds, it seems as though he takes the deck back and has penn immediately touch a card. However I think Penn would have noticed him catching a glimpse and certainly would know he was classic forced. This proved to me that "Fool Us" was a sham.
    The trick was available in magic stores years before he performed it on the show.
    I saw it performed by an amateurish magician working behind the counter at one of the Olde Towne Magic Shops in Orlando, Florida.

    The layest of laymen here. Doesn't it seem too risky to try to force Penn a card? I would have thought that Penn wouldn't fall for that. He purposefully signs his name differently every time, and (almost) literally knows every trick in the book.

      Whether or not he used a different sort of force, Penn might have known what he was trying to do and just played along anyway, he's not trying to spoil the trick.

    And a supposed expert magician like Penn didn't realise a card was forced on him, and missed the deck switch right before his eyes. P&T aren't so great, neither of them can handle cards or even shuffle properly.

    • @eliyahuw
      @eliyahuw 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Penn did know about the deck switch and force. That wasn't what fooled them.

    • @silentstorm5757
      @silentstorm5757 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      But Penn did catch the first switch, he said so in the episode. Also, Shawn has won a world championship of magic. He was on reddit last week and when asked if he could force a card on any magician he said 'It would be arrogant to say "yes", so I'll just say "probably" '. Any magician knows what a classic force is, but that doesn't mean they catch it 100% of the time, especially when it's one as clean as Shawn's.
      Penn originally was fooled by it, and initially on his podcast said he thought he had a true choice. When he talked about it later, he realized it must have been a force.

    Revealing a trick as good as this one (that too a marketed item) to the layman on TH-cam is not good for the artform ... It just kills the "magic" out of the performance. Just to gain some subscribers you're ruining the artform. Did you take any permission from Shawn to share HIS trick out open in TH-cam ? Bruh create your own trick if you think you're too genius ! And then reveal and teach on TH-cam. I don't know what's wrong with people like you on TH-cam revealing marketed tricks without permission!!!!

    Back in my day, teaching another magician's creation would have gotten you beat up. Smh... This is crazy. People do anything for content. There's got to be a super low percentage of viewers who will actually attempt to perform this bit. Does SF know you are teaching his effect? Not knocking you mate, you seem like a great guy. I just don't understand why magicians think it's cool to teach other magician's material.
