    • @beatles42ohgg94
      @beatles42ohgg94 ปีที่แล้ว

      this is one of the reasons the katana was such a formidable weapon. did you see how they bent and wobbled like noodles?
      other lesser swords would either straight up break, or bend, and not bend back.
      that flexibility was what made them amazing. now, if only they attatched them at a slight angle for the slicing motion instead of chopping motion.

    • @outandabout259
      @outandabout259 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@beatles42ohgg94 actually you got that completely backwards. Katanas with their differential hardening have one hard but brittle edge and a soft spine that bends instead of springing back. Many spring steel swords from medieval Europe and other places, on the other hand, can bend pretty much into a C and will spring right back with no plastic deformation. Sure, a katana will not snap like a spring steel sword when bent more than it can handle, but the amount it can bend before plastic deformation is significantly smaller.

    • @SureTadpoleYT
      @SureTadpoleYT ปีที่แล้ว +19

      This is actually due to the frame rate of the camera. When a blade is in the same spot in the circle every time the camera captures a frame, it will look like it's standing still. If it's slightly faster or slower it will look like it's going slow or backwards. This is the same reason it happens multiple times since all the swords look the same, you don't know how many swords you're seeing between frames and it can vary.

      @@Saol.Alainn I don't remember ever seeing the backward spinning with my own eyes in natural light. It happens all the time with lights that flicker on and off though! As far as I know, eyes don't have a specific "refresh rate" where all receptors go on and off at the same time, there is a lot of overlap and at any given time some are on and some off, which results in a smooth blend and motion blur instead of sharp still images.

    Couple of suggestions for spinny swords...
    1. Build a funnel from some plywood and let the roundy items roll in a line out of a chute.
    2. Connect a ramp wuth an angle to work in combo with gravity to cascade items into the rotation of the blades
    3. Assistance might be needed from an agitator in case of less roundy things. Depending on the angle out of the funnel.
    This was a great viddy idea come true!

    Katanas are single-edged swords. Yours were placed with the flat side down and the angled side up, which is why everything was tossed upward by the cuts. It also meant that the swords were pushed down with equal force on each slice, flexing them. For weak items like berries, the swords would cut right through with almost no movement, but the more solid and heavy things like a watermelon are going to put a lot of downward force on each blade. Also the curve of the blades tend to push the victims/ammunition outward, reducing the number of cuts they'll make. The solution is to use straight, doubled-edged blades like longswords.

    The flexing of the blades on that last shot is actually really cool because swords (not just katana but any sword) is supposed to have a bit of flex to it so that it doesn’t just snap as soon as it hits something hard like another sword, a shield, armour, bone, etc. That whole Newton’s Third Law thing applies to ancient weaponry as well.

    My first thought after seeing the trailer was "Do they even know how katanas are assembled and fixed on their handles?" They were lucky enough that they didn't have any casualties upon firing that thing up.

      No luck involved. There's a reason that they had a bunker.

    A proper Katana is held together by a single bamboo pin, as they found out the hard way. The tsuba is pushed over the tang, against the habaki. The hilt material is then added, and the bamboo pin is inserted. They’re then wrapped and the handle construction is more or less complete.

    The sound that thing makes when getting up to speed 🤯
    You guys should invert the rig for a future video - spin objects you want to cut (ex. 2x4 studs) and slowly raise the sword(s) to see the that sweet slice action!!

    That's 273 MPH for us other folks so you don't have to look it up. That was so cool. Glad no one got hurt at the start, that was nuts! Definitely one of the coolest skits ever though 100%

    My youngest and I sat down and watched both of these and this is awesomely insane... And painful the audio as those swords get up to speed is absolutely one of the most painful audio experiences we have ever had on youtube. But the content more than made up for it.

    Angling the swords more like a spiral should cut better and help a little with the flexing issue. Some sort of shocks on the hilt could do good. Yall really need a flag and bright red light which signals "if you can see this, you are in danger!" Id recommend some kevlar cordage on the swords to take the oomph out when they go flying. Please do pool noodles, spaghetti, pineapple, and jello cups. Also might want to put camera center slightly to the right of impact zone.

    WHAT !? No mechanical connection between the handle and the glade ? There are two pin holes in the tangs, but, it's obvious that there where NO pin there. There was not even some glue. It was just friction fitted.
    The sound of that contraption is so nice.
    Then, those steel swords flapping around as it they where made out of rubber...
