Shout out to editor Jack doing a stellar job tracking the ball with the drone and again in editing. You're brilliant Jack and we really appreciate you!
The Batcopter was built to be able to hit all sorts of stuff which is why it’s so big! Yes we wanted to hit a ball farther than Destin but that was only the Batcopter’s first challenge. We wanted to make a versatile machine that could also hit larger/heavier balls like basketballs, soccer balls etc really far so we can do even harder challenges. This is why in the engineers simulations it shows those bigger balls and not baseballs. Lots more cool stuff coming from the Batcopter everyone, how good!
I've been working in the mechanical design/engineering/manufacturing field for over 15 years, including time spent in aerospace around US military weapons components, and I have never heard anything like the sound that the Batcopter makes when it connects. In context that is one of the most terrifying noises I have ever heard a machine make. Pretty please, do more of this. Two thumbs way up.
The noise *is* terrifying (and awesome), but the dent in the "bat" is what worries me most. At 400rpm, the only way to describe what happens if it breaks/folds is; Catastrophic failure.
I love how even in the wide shots the trajectory is just.... Straight.... Absolute insanity. Cant help feeling this is a different record, being that Destin used regulation bats, but that doesnt detract from the engineering at all though!
Yeah, theres got to be some sort of ruleset, otherwise you could just do any stupid thing that hits a ball and call it a home run. Not only did Destin do it with legal bats, but he also did it in a regulation field too, not that that makes TOO much difference, but it is what it is. Regulation bats from home base on a regulation field, vs... some crazy weird metal rod helicopter looking thing in a backwoods clearing. *shrug*
As an engineer, I think many of us grew up hoping to engineer stuff like this. That engineering team is pretty damn lucky to actually get the opportunity!
You have Destin with real bats and actual pitching, you have Shane with a human swinging the bat, and then you have this monstrosity. Beautiful engineering and amazing consistency. Can't wait to see the basketballs.

So much I could say! Brilliant effort guys. My big takeaways are: 1) It's crazy how similar a couple of baseball bats sound to a real helicopter if swung around fast enough. 2) The Magnus effect is so very beautifully demonstrated with some of those hits!
Mad respect to Anthony (and +1 for Jess) for letting you use his land - and I assume letting you put that concrete pad down too in the middle of his field - all for some massively cool experiment! It always amazes me how people react to you guys doing these. Here in NA, it would be "Get the F* off my land unless you're paying me big bucks!"
I LOVE this video. I've worked with variable frequency drives (VFD) and programmable logic controllers (PLC) for nearly 30 years. This is definitely the least boring use of the technology.

I would say the ball hit at a 1000 rpm bat would be far to expensive to do. The impact at that speed would destroy the bat, the ball probably would be damaged as well. And with the ball damaged hang time would be limited, so I would say a ball smacked at a 1000 rpm would go 3 80 and 424 meters. As on paper it could go 500 meter.
That wall in the background at the beginning of the video looks so cool. The sky and the background looked so beautiful minus the bugs. It was cool of Anthony allowing you to use his land for your video. Also, his dog was super adorable!
I'd love to dig into the engineering of this thing vs destins. The way the ball is launched into the bat (shot vs punted) has got to change quite a bit in terms of hit distance.
The big difference is destin used actual base ball bats. This thing uses massive aluminium tubes, not base ball bats. They have the record for longest hit *of a baseball*, not longest baseball hit, ie base ball bat vs base ball.
I love thinking about that too, think about the elastic reaction that would occur if they used a pitching machine at even 50mph in addition to bats or tubes spinning at such a insane rate of speed. It's crazy to think how much more velocity they can achieve by adding in some velocity on the other end. At that point we would have to consider even the structural integrity of the ball as I am sure the covers strings inside the baseball would begin to tear and split with such an intense elastic reaction. I'm honestly surprised they didn't have the covers come off a few of the baseballs they used in this videos already without having added velocity on the other end.
The subtle Jokes either editor Jack or the boys put in post production - such as Herron hearing "240m", and then going "OH 230!", so the confused "230?" flashes across the video, perfectly commenting on the confusion (11:35) -- is such an underrated part of the HR videos that I just adore

Yeah, they can get annoying sometimes. I've been literally 100 miles from civilisation, get out of the car, and there is instantly a cloud of flies there.
Well done boys! I can't wait to see this thing do melons and spray paint cans, and so much more.
Wow... Amazing work by all parties! Thanks Anthony for letting the boys play in your yard! Well done engineers! Legend video editing as usual, and thanks for the fun boys.
This was one of my favorite ones you have done. I am 51 years old, I played baseball from 4 years old till I was 40, my last 2 years was semi pro, I was a pitcher but was also a good hitter, I had to stop playing due to getting arthritis in my throwing shoulder. Great job breaking the world record.
Thing is I don't think it's a legitimate world record because they didn't use the correct equipment for example a proper baseball bat like dustin did good smack all the same tho
It's a rare day when Destin does a video that misses some scientific controls and even rarer when HR actually does something scientifically.
Colour me impressed.
to be fair, they didnt do it...
they payed an engineering firm ALOT of money to do it for them...
@@RubSomefastOnIt payed?
@@RubSomefastOnIt Just to be completely transparent, the engineering was all done gratis as a junior staff training/team building exercise by Innovaero under the guidance and mentorship of the senior staff. The cost of the build was however covered :-)
I want to see better pitching. A fast ball has to add distance. C'mon 'scientists'. Get real.
This was the best way to pitch to it considering the timing needed. They had to do timing corrections every time they added RPM.
Last night, I was having a really hard time falling asleep, and at one point, I looked at my watch which said 4:44 AM. Of course, I immediately thought of you! 😊Awesome channel mates! 😀Keep it up! 😃
A lot of the energy created when hitting for distance comes from the speed of the pitch. A ball thrown with velocity can thus be hit farther than a lobbed one - Science with CS
You guys are insane! Favorite TH-camrs by far
3:28 i love how he said balls getting loaded and looked down
GDay mates, I work for Brett Sports. Thanks for using our ABL Baseballs! Glad they are getting put to good use since the ABL can’t play this year! Hopefully y’all enjoyed our product! Let me know if you have any Baseball related Questions! Cheers mates
You can answer a question for me then please. How much are your baseballs each? I just looked on the HR merch page and I’m astonished.
Shout out to "Kanyana Engineering" for fabricating the stainless bat blade!
Congrats on the new record boys! 🎉🎉
I dunno how you can stand those flys. They would literally drive me insane.
I literally can’t even watch the video bc of them
@@jamescaspervine873 That's Australia for you. Everyone always jokes about all the "deadly" animals in there, but it's the flies that will get you.
Now we need to see how far Destin can shoot a ball with his supersonic baseball cannon
Has to be hit not shot
If only the supersonic cannon could fire at the batcopter at speed…..the destruction would be fantastic.
Anthony is an Awesome man for letting you guys do this
14:10 r.i.p bugs!
Rest in piece to the hundreds, maybe thousands of flies murdered by a supersonic baseball... tragic way to go out
I love how they advertised for kiwico, that was a genuine and effective advert
Great video. Would have been awesome to see the distance overlayed on different MLB stadiums to see how tiny they look compared to the hits
amazing video as always! thanks Editor Jack! ;) I also love the "How Many?" videos as well. Any chance that could be a series and its own playlist? Cheers guys. Thanks for making our days better :)
These legends help get up that record.
The guys who literally made everything
There is really a lot of math going into all of that. It’s neat to look at all of the stuff they did to make it work
Amazing work boys! Knocked it out of the park, as always! :D
Have you given any thought to reviving the ancient art of the Benjaminite Slingers, re: Judges 20:16? It'd be rad to see you blokes doing some David vs Goliath stuff, trying to sling golf balls through a watermelon or whatnot. Cheers from Brisbane, on the civilized coast! :D
What a cute chopper!
The sound when the "bat" hits the ball
Looking forward to seeing super bouncy rubber balls being sent down the field. Was thinking about golf balls but they might be too hard and leave big dents.
What happens to the batcopter (and other large items) when they have completed their experiments?
Drop them from a crane?
@@heathergarnham9555 batcoper vs trampoline
@@jenw6439 drop the trampoline onto the Batcopter or see if we can bounce the Batcopter
@@heathergarnham9555 Drop the golf balls from a crane? They would only bounce up, which is not as interesting as whacking them with the batcopter.
Love how when that deadly contraption gets up to abover 250 rpm on the "bats" it actually sounds a bit like an actual helicopter!
