The tracking on these washcloths looks nice, almost intentional. The contrast of black and white makes the whole project look lovely. I get tracking in my pieces from time to time, mostly when I'm using thicker cotton (SugarNCream and the equivalent), but lighter weight cotton like an 8/4 or an 8/2 doesn't track so much.

I have no clue! I’ve heard that it’s more likely with thicker cottons than thinner, but I expect it’s predictable.
