    "What was the goal of the criticism to begin with? If the goal was not to instigate change, if the goal was not to bring about progress, then was the only purpose to try and rain on someone else parade or make yourself feel better by making someone else feel worse" - there is WAY more context to this but what a great quote. The few lines he said before that were awesome too. This is a really intelligent person. I could listen to him talk for hours!!

    Wow! Incredible interview. Kudos on asking so many deep and thought-provoking questions. As someone who has consumed virtually all Barkley content on the internet, this was the best interview I have ever heard. John Kelly was certainly a big part of that with sage and thoughtful answers.

    Sitting listening to this here in the English Lake District and blown away to hear John talking of the experience he had whilst in the UK. The 3rd type of value to and from the UK running communnity is fantastic. Chapeau John.

    On another interview John Kelly said that he didn't need to write an essay this year and that previous finishers get automatic race entry and they don't need to submit essays.

    Why would you pre-arrange tweets to send when the race is on when the race, including its start time, is so unpredictable? How can those tweets be written in advance with any kind of accuracy? What is the point of sending tweets that are pre-written and pre-arranged to send at certain points?

    The three guys who finished Barkley have professional careers. They make 5 to 10 times what a professional runner makes. Yet, they are famous for running. You can be a great runner and have a profession. Engineers aren't famous until they finish Barkley. Something wrong with that.

    • @runsingletrack
      @runsingletrack  ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree - at least for the moment - that you can be a great runner and have a separate profession. It was that way in the 1950s and 1960s era National Football League..the best players in the league, like Johnny Unitas, had full or part-time jobs outside the sport to make ends meet. But once there was enough money, players took advantage of all the benefits that come from shedding responsibilities in other areas of work to make this there 1 thing and it made it impossible for people that were splitting their time/energy/focus to compete..I suspect we are about 10 years away from that in ultra running

      Probably millions of engineers and a handful of Barkley finishers, one is way more impressive than the other. Especially after meeting some of the engineers I've met lol.

      “A little too woke” describes nearly all of trail running to be fair.
