This video is definitely needed for the pokemon community. Too many people faking cards and not knowing which are genuine or fake. Especially for kids out there that just joined the hobby
The way I used to do it at school was really simple, if you look at the back of a fake card and a real card you can usually see the difference in the colour blue. Of course this doesn't always work (because old cards usually have a different shade) but if you're just comparing modern cards it's a really good way to check it easily
That works in the past. But fakes now are getting better. Especially if the og card doesn't have texture, it's hard to confirm. without tearing it up. (Which of course defeats collection purpose.) Sad noises*
My son traded some of his cards for fake cards last summer. A really tough lesson for him. It's amazing to talk to a kid and have to say "Yeah, there are some people who will go out of their way and be dishonest about this." A good lesson for him though. We did the rip test on one that he had vs. a modern (real) V card. As you say, he's armed himself with as much knowledge as possible. Thanks for this great video.
Love the content as always. I wish you would make a video about the fake "1st edition" stamps as well because some of those are super hard to catch until you have the card in hand.
My heart breaks for that fake Latias & Latios GX card. It's at the top of my card wishlist right now, and I have came across fakes of that card myself while hunting for that card. I have heard that particular card is very highly-sought after and rare, so I'm honestly not that surprised that people would be making fakes of it to try and scam people.
Quick question for all of those experienced. I picked up the Lucario VStar premium box from a local card shop. The box came with a Brilliant Stars pack. In that pack was a rapid strike style Mustard which I already happen to have. Now here’s my question. Is it fairly normal for cards to have slight variances in shade of color? Everything about the card matches the card I already own. Font. Size. Spacing. Art. The ONLY variance is the shade of color on the bottom of Mustard’s shoe. It’s the same color, just a darker shade of it.
Any main line shop in europe would be sued by pokemon for not selling the real thing.. in the UK you have Smyths, Argos, WH Smiths and most supermarkets all selling pokemon..
I just bought a full art Misty's determination. It was textured but the back of the card was WAY too glossy smooth. I've never felt a pokemon card that smooth and I immediately knew it was fake.
Thanks for this knowledge! I know nothing about new pokemon cards, only the og sets from wotc. A buddy is trying to sell me new cards and this will come in handy while looking at the cards to be sure nothing fishy is going on.
Another method no one seems to have mentioned: the cut of the card. This is easiest to see on the energy cards you pulled. The border on the bottom of the cards is almost entirely cut off when it should measure the same all around the card.
Can do the rip test also. Real cards have the ink strips across the card when ripped and fake ones do not. Rip the energy cards if don't want to rip the actual pokemon cards.
Clearly just made this video to flex on us with that latias & latios gx 😉 but in all seriousness thanks for making this video. Some new memebers to the community need this information
I just bought some yesterday and I can tell by the back of it. But I can't be sure if the ones I did get from tin can are real or not. The coloring is right just not quite sure on it can I get help.
I have discoloration on my astral booster packs. Kinda looks like the printer was running out of blue. All from multiple box of B&B stadium. Even a few discoloring on some evolving skies packs from collection boxes. The green is not shiny and deep. More of an OD green matte. That can really throw you off.
Love the content. Nice looking setup. I noticed that the Pokémon center promo that comes with the etb (the one with the stamp) is doing pretty well on TCG player. Around $20. Makes me wonder what the Pikachu promo from the Paldea Evolved etb will be going for. 👀
Great video!!!! You’re awesome! I actually bought fake packs once but figured it out once I actually looked at it from picking it up. Then I opened n confirmed it. lol only spent like 5 bucks though but I saved to compare/study the differences!
The most annoying posts on Reddit are the “what’s my card worth?” And it’s one of those cheap bootleg gold cards that don’t look anything like real cards! The caption is always “I can’t find anything about this card”
This helps a lot today i bought my first pack and by watching this video i already knew mine were fake by the rigids on the pack. Also i got 2 vstars one Vmax and one V card in the pack.
Usually fake Pokemon cards are easy to tell if they are fake, but some have been getting closer to look really authentic. Most also most have a noticeable texture to them, not completely smooth.
Does trainer gallery piplup have texture? What about mewtwo gx 39/73? I tried tn look for info but cant find any... Many of these fake card tutorials are outdated.
If you are certain it’s fake you can just rip the card in half. The real ones (at least the English versions, not sure about others) have a black line going through them.
I visit local anime cons pretty regularly. I've never collected any tcg before, so when I noticed that some sellers have pretty cheap boosters packs I decided to buy some. I thought they are cheap because they are older packs or something. I guess I was ripped off.
my little brothers got me a whole box of fake cards around the hgss era while they were visiting NYC. they were bootleg as all get out, covered in errors. I kept "Life Gerb" in my wallet for years just cause it made me laugh lmao
These fake is easy to tell, the hardest one or one that usually sold out and people cant really tell is the 35$ etsy Moonbreon with texture. Its so good made that people can get it sold easily.
A great way to spot a fake, look at the edge of the card (from the side). On a real card there will be a black line that runs through the middle. Fake cards don't have this. You may need a magnifying glass tho haha
I bought a reshiram and zekrom gx from a pawn shop today for 25 and i cant tell if its faked. It has the texture feeling though and the size matches other cards
Haha I send my niece to school with fakes to swap for real ones, tell her to give them five fakes for one real one ,, some people have to learn the hard way , if it sounds to good to be real it’s probably fake ,, that’s something you should have taught your kid ,,
Wow. I never came across a fake Japanese Pokémon Card. Only fake English Pokémon Cards. It just shows you that the Japanese Cards are better quality and not as easy to counterfeit as English Pokemon Cards.
its way harder to sell japanese pokemon cards in usa than english, also whoever buys a japanese most likely has wide knowledge of pokemon cards, will be almost imposible to fool a collector with a fake card, the target of the fake cards are casual ppl that buys for gift or their kids, they go for the cheapest and more atractive out there
My cousin told me my fossil zapdos was fake and the only way to tell was to rip it. So I did. And it was real lol😅 man that was like 23 years ago lmfao
Nah mate, I'd say the biggest issue that affects card collectors are the scalpers and resellers. Who's only goal in buying/obtaining cards is to sell. As a collector, who buys because I want to collect and keep them, those people are ruining it. Because of them, the prices of new cards and boxes are going up but the actual value is going down in comparison. Pokemon is already one of the most expensive franchises, let's not make it worse 😅 Fake cards can be avoided, those people can't.
@@Carla-pq6gu rounded corners unless the card is a cut error and the black is super thin but exists in the middle of the white part of the edges!! You definitely need good light to see it!
And the absolute worst thing about this problem is that tcg could care less about us getting scammed. They print paper and we've made them filthy rich but they can't protect their customers? This hobby hands down has the worst people associated with it. Sickening!
In all my time buying single's (4 1/2 years) i was lucky to only get a single fake. And even then the seller told me that he thinks its a fake before the card even arrived. I compared it to a similar styled one of the same set and next to each other it was pretty blatant to see. Color was of and the "shinyness was very different. Got a full refund and everything was fine again ^-^
My guy its made out of the same material. The real scam is paying hundreds or thousands of dollars for a piece of paper LMAO. Get the fake cards people.
everyone knows how much pokemon cards are worth these days.... sorry to burst your bubble bro litteraly still no one knows unless you collect. so that is still only like 5-10% of the population at max, there will still be moms selling for cheap.
This video is definitely needed for the pokemon community. Too many people faking cards and not knowing which are genuine or fake. Especially for kids out there that just joined the hobby

So does that mean the blue is real

Those are the most realistic looking fakes I’ve ever seen
Bot
Lmaoo hell naw
Nahh them fakes are mad ugly
You can see Jake in the fake cards lbvs those are obviously fake and he is showing us examples! 🤦🏻♂️
Nah they're really obvious; you should see XY era fake cards, now that's tough!
Back in the early 2000's a lot of fake cards also doubled as stickers and would peel off the cardboard lol
I don't need to touch the card. I felt the glossyness by just looking at it.
Fakes has always been an issue but they keep getting closer and closer to a real card, spooky times 😅
Great info being pumped out on this channel! Thanks Jake
Love the content as always. I wish you would make a video about the fake "1st edition" stamps as well because some of those are super hard to catch until you have the card in hand.

Unlike the video games, in the TCG space, if it's really shiny: it's usually worthless

"And this is what a real Moonbreon looks like-IF I HAD ONE!" 🤣
Great and clear explanation with good visual examples ! Thank you !
New to the hobby. Watched alot of your vids. Much appreciated
Thanks Jake, videos like this are very helpful for the community
Shoutout to Jake for having the club stamp from the night before still on his hand lol!
Living literally anywhere outside america pretty much every pokemon card/pack found in stores are totally fake its so frustrating

Got a question, gold card, heavy feels like metal. Its a MCharizard hp 220with the attack Atrocious Raze 170
Thanks for this knowledge!
I know nothing about new pokemon cards, only the og sets from wotc. A buddy is trying to sell me new cards and this will come in handy while looking at the cards to be sure nothing fishy is going on.
I’ll never forgot the kids who would bring fake yugioh cards to school. 😂
One of the biggest problem with these videos is that to tell if your card is fake is to have 2 of the same card pretty much.
Today I got my first pack and it had 2 of the same cards
Another method no one seems to have mentioned: the cut of the card.
This is easiest to see on the energy cards you pulled. The border on the bottom of the cards is almost entirely cut off when it should measure the same all around the card.
Thaks for this video it definitely taught me a few things so im sure it will help newer collectors in the hobby
I have not seen a fake with texture, but that’s scary.
Thanks man, this is helpful, sounds accurate. He said" know what the real one looks like". Cant dispute that..
This is why I got into buying graded cards. They are alot harder to fake and can easily spot a fake slab a mile away
Can do the rip test also. Real cards have the ink strips across the card when ripped and fake ones do not. Rip the energy cards if don't want to rip the actual pokemon cards.

This is maybe a dumb question, but can the year the vare was made vary or must it be corect for the card to be real? I need help please

TBH I actually never cared if I had fake cards cuz I was like ten never bothered looking if they were real

When theres doubt just look at it sideways and check for the black line, bulletproof method
This really helps! Saw some this weekend at a garage sale

Any clues to a fake when looking at a sealed box? Thanks!
Great tips, always good to see more examples of real vs fake cards.
Does trainer gallery piplup have texture?

Hello, does the border black color in the real "aerodactyl V 092/196" Card fade when scratching? If so is it fake ir real? Can you please help me out?

Where do you buy the real pokemon cards from. My grand son scanned a card, and it says its worth $800.00. How do we know if its real?

Recently i found out that the texture thing does not matter only the ink or size and more
It's really amazing how often the people who post the fake cards online asking whether they're real or not will defend the card to the death, lol.
is a pokemon card fake if it you tear it and has the black material in the middle throughout the card but a purple swirl on the back, than blue?
no but tearing is not recommended
I bought a reshiram and zekrom gx from a pawn shop today for 25 and i cant tell if its faked. It has the texture feeling though and the size matches other cards
My kid is always swapping real for fake at school! So annoying.
Haha I send my niece to school with fakes to swap for real ones, tell her to give them five fakes for one real one ,, some people have to learn the hard way , if it sounds to good to be real it’s probably fake ,, that’s something you should have taught your kid ,,
I do these videos everyday on youtube shorts
Would love to see a WOTC video of this kind!
Cell phone flashlight test is also good
You should of ripped in half both the fake and real Latias tag team card for science.. 😂
Thank you so much for this guide

Fakes are usually heavier, darker, and lack the black strip between the edges of the card.
Does the black strip go all 4 sides? Are the corners square or rounded?

yea I collected Pokémon cards when I was younger.. Turns out all of them are fake.
Can graded cards be faked to???
Yes! But it's very rare.
I had to go through my entire Pokémon collection and throw out so many cuz they were all FAKE
a way you can see if a pokemon card is fake if you point it in the sun and you can see right through it its fake
This worries me because I've bought so many cards online. 😢
always good to get a reminder of the scumbags out there
Fake cards are very shiny and bendy.
Me who still can't spot the difference😂 lmao
rly?
That's wild-a fake pack
This is not the biggest issue
Black ink ori card..no black ink fake😅
there are better fake card...even psa grade them as 10 that kind is harder to tell
Let’s be real…. You just wanted to show off your alt art latios and latios lol
Do the rip test lol
How to know they look swme goddamit
Fakes are biggest
