      Space engineers probably has just one or two people working on the planets. Lots of games have parts that completely rely on one person's competence.

    • @Jintorax
      @Jintorax ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not hard though...

    • @Jintorax
      @Jintorax ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @Embassy_of_Jupiter Reason is easy though :
      Space Engineer's devs only implement mods. Community ask for a more complex system like piston, a modder answer and give piston ! Some months later, the dev implement the mod. People want rotor ? Same thing. Planet ? Actually the same thing ! It was a modded spherical gravity generator with a big asteroid at first. I don't remember if the atmosphere system was them or mod though... But to be frank, it's so simple that a mod probably did it. Even their weather system is janky and they teased NPC engineer like years ago before deleting every video proof and never talk about it again. (probably fake)
      The worst, is the whole military DLC, which is literally (again) a mod implemented but with a little less feature. Some bugs that modders asked to fix (one in particular, asked by the shield mod guy) never been fixed in yearS. Man, that game is a shame.
      And seeing starship EVO getting more optimisation, more possibility, better planet, better automation etc... Just make me remember that space engineer was so much of a wasted potential. For fuck's sake, a random french guy did better than their whole team in probably the same timeframe ! And Keen did 3 game (that was basically the same) before ! No excuses ! I hope the S EVO guy get enough founding to actually get a team to help him do what he can't do and make a real fucking great game we deserve !

    • @Jintorax
      @Jintorax ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Embassy_of_Jupiter And don't forget MEDIEVAL engineers :D
      I regret to have bought it so much. That thing is worst than a cash grab ! "Yeah what we code in SE will go into ME and reverse ! Mutually beneficial !" And the game is bugged like hell and barebone. Don't know if you've seen the CART on this one. That's just horrible...

    When you lay out your hybrid approach like that it makes it seem very simple, but I'm sure this took a lot of research and development to actually come up with, sanity check, and implement. The result is quite impressive, and I'm excited to see it in game :)

    I want to say that I like your approach to working on the game. I like how the construction is done, the ships look aesthetically pleasing and it's not always possible to understand that they are built from separate blocks, they look like beautiful models made in a 3D editor. In almost all similar games, ships always look a little polygonal (maybe with the exception of the dual universe) due to the fact that in them you are only allowed to build from pre-prepared blocks, for example, you cannot choose a very extreme slope, which is why you cannot build sharp and thin ship. But in this game it is possible and it's great! I also like moving parts that definitely add immersiveness and aesthetics. I'll be honest, I haven't bought the game yet as I'm waiting for the survival mode, but I'm very interested in this game. I'm sure if I bought the game now, I would spend a lot of time building beautiful ships, but I'm waiting for the goals to appear in the game for these ships. I'm also interested in how water is implemented in the game. For example, what happens if you dig the ground next to a lake? I doubt that there is any physics for water now or that it will appear in the future due to technical limitations, but I'm still interested. It is also interesting how ships interact with water. I am sure that the implementation of the planets was a very difficult task and I wish you good luck in further development!

    I checked out the recent update and you've made excellent progress. A few things came across my mind though:
    1. Water appears to be pretty patchy, you can see the repeating squares from land.
    2. Maybe a one off event but game crashed when I went so fast that I clipped underground. Not supposed to be under the floor, but suppose someone accidentally does, they might crash?
    3. I've got a GEFORCE 1080 Ti 11gb; I get anywhere between 40-100 fps when on planets, despite the small number of vegetation and clouds. I'm targeting a 1920x1080 display @ 165hz.
    4. Maybe add a toggle for wave intensity? It looks great, but most games like No Mans Sky use flat surfaces with cheap tricks to make water look wavy.

  • @dakaodo

    These procedural planets look amazing! As you said several times, the color palettes can look really good. Or funky, but that's good too. :D I love that you've already planned for and integrated many of the things I (and apparently many others) love from the space exploration/survival genre, like Space Engineers and its mods: in particular, planetary rings (but here with actual asteroids within the rings!).
    Do you have any personal unique features you would really like to attempt creating in your vision, that you haven't seen in other space exploration/creative games? Could be personal interpretation of common concepts, like wormholes and black holes, or anything completely creative new concepts.
    In the far distant future (after all the current big road map items are built to your satisfaction), would your procedural framework support non-spherical planetary bodies? And would that fit into your vision and style for the game? Ringworlds are an obvious fan favorite, but there's also Dyson spheres and more fantastical things like shattered worlds (example: a planet struck eons ago by a small moon, with a big crater scooped out) or a planet with an equatorial trench like a giant apple core. Or outright wacky ancient alien megastructures like a planet-sized moebius strip.

    I think for No Man's sky they have a few base assets for the procedural generation to put together, for example, they could have a tree trunk with mushrooms instead of leaves on the end of branches. Also, one thing that I've noticed, is that I've been finding trees on planets and moons that don't have atmospheres. Such as the trailer where big herds of these deer like animals would run away from this big triceratops looking dinosaur that actually knocked down trees, while big dinosaurs were walking slowly and minding their own business. I have no idea how they made that demo but I believe it was all scripted. I know their studio got flooded and they lost most of their progress with the game. this is so impressive. I've been playing space/vehicle building games like Starmade, Space Engineers, From the Depths and Starbase for such a long time, but they all have their issues. Starmade's development died a long time ago, Space Engineers is fun, but the interiors feel very limited for smaller ships, From the Depths is not very good visually and gameplay wise and StarBase flopped completely, and development also died.
    This game feels different. I've been following you for years now, and every so often I watched an update video and was blown away by what you've accomplished as a solo dev. It's genuinely insane to me. It just feels like a passion project, a combination of different aspects from other games that come together in a perfect blend, for me at least. So, I finally caved and bought the game a couple of days ago. It's great so far, allows so much creative freedom in builds.
    I hope you take good care of yourself while working on such a gargantuan task like solo developing a game, though. And I hope for you that the game explodes in popularity once you get to a stage where you think it's ready for the influx of players.

    Looks good, though it could do with having some form of continent generation, in order to create planet wide highs and lows (so you can have seas for e.g.)

      Hi, there are seas and continent with various height, although it might not have shown in the video.

    Awesome! Some aspects of your project are very similar to mine, I'm also developing a space game so I know how difficult it is to implement many of the systems for a game of this scale, kudos to you!
    Of course, despite some visual similarities, my game's art direction differs a lot from yours (thats good!). I'm interested in your cloud shaders, how did you make them? This is something I intend on my upcoming features that will be implemented.
    Once again, congratulations to you! Such a complex game is very challenging to develop.

    4:25 That glitch or mistake is really other-worldly and cool though.

    Will the scope of your game go more towards survival, colony sim, or factory oriented at the end stages?
    Such a nice work by the way, absolute unit of a game you're developing right there.

    I didn't bought Starship Evo yet, but I think I was playing it's really early alpha in the past like 5 years ago if I'm not wrong. This is looking amazing and it would be epic to find different (procedurally generated) animal/plant/fungi species in different planets, or procedurally generated unique materials like crystals to collect... ahh that would be actually perfect game that I'm still searching for. For example you got basic ores like iron, gold, diamond, cobalt, but in some rare cases you can also find unknown ores with procedurally generated name, shape of crystals, color... I hope you gonna consider that... it would be mindblowing... I'll buy Starship Evo in next week :)

    Please teach us how!! I would love to be able to learn how you implemented the generation of the planet, the look of the atmosphere and all of that. Please consider making a video series explaining the process

      Yeah I could dig more into details, it just super super time consuming to make youtube content.

    havent heard news on this in awhile, could take over the space survival genre because there are no competitors with the potential you have with this game.

    reminds me of the style spore planets have (if they were upscaled and made overall better)

    The factory building type stuff looks really fun as well. It took a long time but i'm so glad you've gotten planets working this well! Will the ring worlds from before still be in the game as well?
